Do I know the way?? I'll leave that one to die....:-p Sure, you can tag along but I'm picking my wife up,or meeting, depending on how many cars we drive,in Stamford at 4PM.....I do have a cell phone so you can call if there's trouble. I posted the directions on the SVX board in that post for the SVX meet in REading.I'm glad you started a new post.I'll swing over there and add to it. You think my posting the old '78 would generate some interest.Either that post is dying or the SVX crowd just doesn't get it.

how to pack wheel bearings?
moosens replied to teasdam's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My Subaru master tech buddy put me at ease today.I need to do a bearing swap and always tapped them in with great care using whatever didn't destroy the bearing. So I ask him if he/they'd press them in for me if I brought him the hub.He gave me a laugh and said he taps them in-using the proper tool supplied by Subaru of course. Good square pieces of metal, good dowels, heavy duty washers,etc......these all come into play when "backyarding" a new wheel bearing in.But as long as you square it up properly and seat it fully without "walking" it in you can be confident. One of these days I'm going to score one of those little bearing packer tube things...but for now the hand packing works well enough. I once changed a rear wheel bearing on a half hour ferry ride and got the job done and tools put away with time for a coffee before disembarking. -
Did a dual range ever come with EFI?

'87-89.....for D/R and SPFI In '87 they used up some carbs so you'll see both that year. -
That is a really really nice Brat that's worth the $3500 opening bid as long as you have the money. If it's kept like a classic it'll never be worth less than that. Not a money maker investment but it'll appreciate. And it has historical value. Good luck.Hope to see you back here as the new owner.

a new wheel for the wheels page

Pretty cool. The '74 sport mags I have were made in Italy.Same bead as your latest, right? Hey Brian,I really needed my turbo gaskets. Please don't forget me.I paid last week I think.Anyhow,I had to go get them at the dealer because I wasn't sure when you were shipping them.Still need it ASAP for the other stuff.Been sending a couple emails and no response so pardon me for posting here. Thanks -
It's a gathering for the whole country, not just the east coast. If you have a special Subaru or even an everyday, late model you're welcome at Carlisle. Plenty of folks show up from all corners, just check the license plates. Pennsylvania is a really nice state to visit.Lots to do in that area for adults and kids.Hershey Park,Harley Factory,Amish Country,Sesame Place is another hour away or so,all that stuff.....and cool CARS that you just won't see at your local drive in car gatherings.

Carlisle-the hotel/camping Update**
moosens replied to moosens's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, you're probably right.I should have pitched the tent and gotten everything soaked instead of staying dry and healthy.I should have taken the Army approach,no doubt. I camp, got all the goodies to prove it.But I also have common sense and a family to get back to.When I arrive and it's 11PM,38 degrees, raining and my wagon suits me just fine there's no thinking twice about it. Cheers. At this point I'll be concentrating on getting my wagon fit for the trip.Any restoration effort is out of the question this year before Carlsile. It'll have to win Best Unrestored Japanese Car or Truck Award. Good luck with everything and I'll check in now and then. -

No way Tony, you've got to shop around.Harrisburg is plenty close,as is York.Check those area out.I found rooms from $45 *yes,on the weekends to*. Motel 6 had several single rooms left and at lease one 2 bed at the H'burg location. The Carlisle/H'burg location also had like 2 single rooms left, but no double bed rooms. If you wake up in York or Harrisburg you're only about 15-40 minutes away depending on your location. It's a fairly quiet area to me so even the state routes are fluent and very nice to drive on a Saturday/Sunday morning. Yes,we slept in our cars last year at Pinchot St. Park.Got there and it was soaked, still raining, late, and who the heck wants to pitch a tent on wet grass for 6-8 hours sleep??Paid for the site of course, but if things are really tight and hey, you're single....just go there and do the car thing.THe showers should be running.Might want to call and check.Gifford Pinchot St.Park is highly recommended in good weather. -

We are booked at the Motel 6 in Harrisburg.Staying over Friday,Saturday, and Sunday.Going home on Monday. See you all there. I should have time for a boneyard run on Monday if we coordinate. -
How much end play is acceptable on the crank shaft? Mine has like a 1/16th or less play from front to back.I'm judging this by the flywheel mounting flange.I grabbed it and moved it in and out a hair...more like 2 or 3 hairs. 1/16th = .0625,correct?A hair is usually around .002-.004...anyhow.... Let's call the end play I have around .010-.030-my best guess.A 1/16th might be a little extreme. Yes,I do have a FSM but I don't have it handy. Also, the cover on the backof the block, behind the flywheel.....I know it's for access, but 2 Q's. What's it called? and... Should I get the gasket and reseal the thing before slapping this engine back together?I'm already doing the rear main, whole front of engine, turbo gaskets,clutch....etc. The cover appears to be dry,not leaking. There's defintiely a slight leak to the rear main though. And one more,The Turbo looks a little rusty colored. My sister inlaws had this alittle bit.Mine seems a litttle more orangish/rust in color.Turbine wheel spins but needs assistance. Are they supposed to spinfree?Or have a little resistance.Any thing I can do while it's all out of the car(to the turbo)?? Thanks for any help.

Carlisle-the hotel/camping Update**
moosens replied to moosens's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks guys. I think we're leaning towards a cheapy motel,or next notch up with the kids.Screw walking to go to the john or shower. I'll try to search better later Monday night or Tuesday for a decent place. Right now there's at least 2 rooms with 2 beds at the York PA Motel 6 for $45.99 ea./night.That's a good 40 minute ride to Carlisle but not a bad one on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Apparently the Carlisle-H'burg Motel 6 was booked, but the plain old Harrisburg one had one room w/2 beds left for $55.99 I think. Check the links and any searches and let me know where we all might meet up. http://www.netbooker.com/booker/AppLogic+booker.hotel.book.AvailResp Super * in Carlisle (one of two but one is booked up) YIKES! http://www.super8.com/Super8/control/Booking/check_avail http://www.super8.com/Super8/control/Booking/search_check -
Who's staying where? We want to either get a cheapy motel or camping cabin. We're probably not pitching tents with the family on this one.Rather pay and be more comfy, less effort. I just want an answer to who's staying where and maybe some price quotes if folks have enquired. Thanks, sorry for the 'tude before.I think you guys understand.Actually, the east coast crowd is mostly all cool.

I have yet to search anything from this Board.I would never expect a list of people along this person's route to be posted.I don't understand what's wrong with this thread. Xtreme-Can you copy that thread here?

Dave,I have an XT6 F/T 5spd that 2 guys are interested in right now. You've helped me often and I think they'll have to understand if you need my tranny. Let me know.Call or email. Good luck with it.
-
Yes,but just more difficult.Helps if you have the little plate the dealer techs have for lining up the head. You might be able to borrow one if you ask you local dealer.Good luck. Always best to take the engine out. When you get to know the lines, etc it's real easy and worth the effort.Even at first time,as long as you have time, you can get all the connections right with a little tape and a marker. The OHV engines are much easier than the OHC's -when in the car.

SVX owners only get bread and water. No sweat, see you soon I'm sure....old wagon in Westerly was it? Louis, better cause, hope it wasn't too windy for you all. We'll see about next weekend. My repairs "should" be done by then.Maybe we'll attack the stockpile....if you dare. Thanks Gabe, that's right.I was actually often deleting my posts that were no longer necessary. But the mods decided to play George Bush Inc. and take away my right to do so.......JUST KIDDING YOU WANKERS!!!! But it was a nice option for the user IMO. Hey guys,Gabe is a great guy, lemme tell ya.He and his girl stopped by to say hi,drop off some goodies, and helped me put my engine crane(insert favorite name) together.I get the feeling if I didn't go get lunch he'd have been working that Turbo engine out with me. Thanks again Gabe!Have a great time.Hope to see you on your turf in early April.

Curious....does it have a nickname yet? Screaming Blue Meanie? Just too sweet!!Can't wait to see it up close. That sucker is going to cause a stir at Carlisle.I'll bet there's at least three more like it by next year.Only bitch is it'll drive up the price of Brats on the east coast. -

moosens replied to soobiescoobie's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Consider stopping to join in on any of several "local" events. Watch for a PA Junkyard Run post soon.We hit the eastern PA yards. One of the better sources for your car. Then there's the Carlisle show.Your car can indeed be entered, and be respected by thousands. http://www.carsatcarlisle.com/schedule/import/index.asp We also meet at Wharton State Forest a.k.a. "Pine Barrens" in NJ.It's not far from you. Most of us drive a good 3 hours more or less to get there. It's sand trail offroading but you can leave your car in the grass lot and ride along if you want to. And then there's the infamous gatherings at my place in Milford,CT Check for any shindigs goin' down in the near future....including a huge blowout of free and dirt cheap parts for your car.I'm getting rid of a heap of EA81 parts, and more. -
Weird axle failure - pictures too *Updated*
moosens replied to GeneralDisorder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Wow,I'm not happy about hearing those NAPA stories.I just got an ARI axle from them.Hey,if it blows I just return it. Also, the guy said he'd take whatever axle I brought in even though I'd be getting another 25T axle for Turbo manual shift. So far my local NAPA has been great for me.Most parts I use are dealer but for axles and radiators I don't have a problem (yet) with NAPA.
