Here we go into 2021. Situation still the same. I have lots of parts , much of which is new old stock that I’m looking to move along. Focusing on my bikes and getting out of Subarus other than daily drivers. I’ll be back someday. Saving what I feel I’ll need or will help for when I get back into the game. Due to the expensive rent at storage I’m wanting to trim down and need to rid my holdings of decades of Subaru dedication. Feel free to send a Private Message regarding any items for 1970-1979 cars and gen one Brat. No 80’s parts other than random oddball items that pop up from nowhere. So please don’t ask about 80’s , 90’s , or later. 1970’s only. Thanks for looking. Fenders , both sides , stage one and two 1972-77 and 1977-79+Brat80-81 you knew that. Have a couple NEW , and the used ones are plenty fine. Beyond fenders I have literally a ton of more of parts. Boxes of new old stock stuffed with all sorts of items. Wheels - 4x140 of course and the early 4.5 width. Basic steels but these were early take offs and show close to new. Easy clean up. Crate engine rebuilt by ATK for dealers and shops 1600 widecase with internal water passage like the 1800. Complete 1600 from a 1979 low miles like 94k , ran well. Comes with intake and carb and I think maybe the brackets and alternator too. Stored inside these last 20 years. I’d trust it to drop in but naturally since it’s out you can do as you wish for refresh. Transmissions - a couple or more of the single range on demand 4WD , and there’s one five speed FWD too. Also have rear differentials will include free with transmission. Otherwise $20 (rear diff.) because I just need things gone that take up space and are heavy. Lots more. Happy New Year .....yes I’m laughing too.

I don’t know. Guys who do that stuff all the time might just swap out or remove some pins in connectors , so be sure you get a good reply from an experienced wrenchman. My job in life is to use and occasionally abuse the well kept used Subaru. That’s my game in a nutshell. I don’t bother with much of what’s been done by others with swaps from different t generations , or modifications for power , etc. Plug and play. But there’s help for you. Maybe make a separate post.

My 92 same deal and all we know from history ( as you guys mention ) for corrective action and still does not work. Its not a start solenoid issue. GD has the solution I’d guess. But at this point I’m about to let the car go soon. Seems to happen only during the winter as best as I can tell. Ours is also an automatic. Sometimes it’s just a second , sometimes more seconds , and other times I keep trying , keep the voltage going and re-try ignition. Most of the time it’ll then send enough juice but then there’s times I just say screw it and go for another car.

As mentioned in the PM I’ll let the 98/99 Forester 2.5 four cam go for $300 The 2002/2003 Legacy GT engine same deal. Both are in NE CT near the RI and Mass. corner. It’s a good two hours from the NY/CT line. Chances are really good that if you come up you’ll meet one of out other board members who is a super Subaru Tech and he also has parts cars and stock lying around. Temps going to drop some but doesn’t bother me. Both engines are inside , one on a stand the other tucked in a corner on a dolley. Back up to the bay and it’s an easy load.

Looking to possibly treat myself to a small commuter that can offer a little excitement. And with that I had thought about a Yamaha TW200 for the last couple of decades at least. Then came the little KTM Dukes. Any baby Duke riders out there , please let me know your thoughts. I am an older experienced rider getting back into commuting on two wheels. I’m 5’7” and ain’t gettin any taller , shrinking more like it. So seat height matters. Used to think I’d certainly be on a Suzuki DR350 or 650 and then the 400 or whatever they’ve made since those olden days. Never got that dual sport bike. Would have been just as happy with a Kawi KLR etc. but anyways here I am in 2021.

1983 E81 Lock Washer for Rear Axle Nut
moosens replied to Cincy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
And one vote for good old Front Wheel Drive Subarus. What we all started off with in the 70’s , folks my age anyways. And to me living in New England and all a simple FWD Subaru manages easily 99% of daily driving throughout the entire year/cycle. Ride on ! -

Nice effort ! -
Once upon a time not very long ago I chased and chased and got my brother a former Subaru tech involved and after a solid half hour or so found the connector fried out AT THE PUMP. It’s the connector just under the mounting plate as you lift the pump assy out. Hey , it happened to me. Just saying it’s worth it to look at it before spending the chase time I did. Best of luck.

Are you kidding ? Back in the day I’d absolutely be that guy just like you. And I’d have at least two ladders on it. Outstanding!!

For reasons I cannot clearly recall at this time a Master Subaru Tech who has now probably 40 years with Subaru told me the 88 and 89’s were better for some last revision upgrades. Very subtle. But made a difference. He knew me fairly well back then and knew I was a diehard dual range fivespeed fan. I had specifically asked which years might be better. You can find the dual range fivespeed from 1985-89 in the “Loyale” series. The holdover Brat and Hatchback models retained the fourspeed dual range during their later years.

Lon , you sure it’s not the glass guides in the door that are scratching the glass ? Sorry I don’t know the exact name of those little parts.

Take off the timing covers. When you need help with the belts there’s archives here. You’ll be ok , just follow instructions. Most people will guess it’s the belt on the drivers (left) side.

It’s only for like two seconds. Done it plenty of times. Passed to me from elders with decades of experience. Just sayin. We deal with more rusty tanks up here.

One thing you could do is take the fuel pump off and reverse polarity and it’ll flush itself out. And then confirm it works. Those are hard to find and if you were to see how much the dealers would get for them you’d give up on the spot. NLA these days I’d have to guess. There are alternatives. Fuel pump is in the rear of the car underside on a small shelf as I recall. Just fore of the right rear axle.

installing hydraulic clutch in my 83 brat
moosens replied to Dadsbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
And check the pedal box for a crack at the clutch pedal pivot on the left side of the pedal box. -
Engine should be an EA82T , you’ll see that in the heads if you get a good look around them. Lots to say here. The basics are fine but before you get too deep maybe do a compression test. How’s the oil and coolant ? Not mixture ? Closed air system so be sure all ductwork and breathing hoses are not cracked. You found the right place for support. I’m not the best that’s for sure but I did own a couple of these at least. Don’t panic if it blows smoke when you do get it started. Should you need parts they are getting very hard to locate. Best of luck with the project.

New member And Owner.

Enjoy ! Many of us here are long time users and abusers. Main theme for me - functionality and fun per dollar. So it’s strictly used Subarus for me. That should tell you that as time goes on you’ll appreciate your Subaru even more , or a guy like myself will if you trade up some day. Cheers ! -
Do you have a good used pad you’re swapping in ? Just curious.

You’re at this point breaking down the dashboard. With the five bolts mentioned you should be able to move the dashboard freely. As it becomes loose you’ll see the obvious places you’ll need attention mike the speedometer cable , wiring harness connections , and really very little else.

Yeah Jim , as a suggestion , maybe more so in better times , taking a nice trek out west could find you in a true solid car. And not some east coast detailed ride hiding the ugly truth. Of course you could do what I’ve done as well as many others and just have one shipped. I’m sure you’d rather have your eyes over it first but some of our wonderful board members have helped me this way going back many years now. Nuttin like solid baby ! Good luck. And like the old Jews say “pay the twenty bucks”.
