  1. Update 2015 **** This job turned out well because of our man Subafreak. Turns out I had done a good enough job of JB welding the wrong sensor in the right spot. So Jesse swapped the pins on the connector and now all reads as it should. So the lesson here is that the new harness has to travel along the top of the tranny and the very last sensor is the lower one with the white insulating jacket. Info you'll want should you swap in a new transmission harness.
  2. Must be on my last hard drive. Basically , the round silencer up top has a hose which goes directly to the air cleaner box. You have that red stubby connecting hose to that brass fitting. There's one large diameter stem on the driver;s side of the air box. That's the normal destination for that hose you're missing. Note the diameter of the silence outlet and air cleaner inlet are the same. And the two large hoses coming from the valve rocker covers meet at the front of the air box. Going by a 1977 factory service manual ,but should still be the same as I recall. Yours on the driver's side has been chopped.
  3. Going to see if I still have the part manual page on that. Bit of a blizzard out now so I'm not checking my wagon just yet.
  4. Western 2.2 Legacy if you need the room or Impreza since you're Leprichan. Spend under $3000 and Guinness the rest. Easy. Done.
  5. Too much effort for too few people to appreciate it. Just have your manuals handy and help as you can. Lots of us have somewhat of a collection of manuals etc. And they show up all the time. Very kind that you offer but I see it as overkill. I've scanned and posted plenty here for vintage stuff - 70's mostly. Nobody from SOA cares. It'll be the same for anything posted that is more than say 15 years old to be safe. Screw them. Corporate attorneys can eat my rusty bumper. As you can see this thread went dormant for a stretch. Indicator. Just help as needed.
  6. Right along those lines above - I was told by a legendary 30+ year Subaru tech that those earlier EJ'a and up to around 96-7 , which our Legacy wagon was with the Same problem , that cylinder 4's valves or maybe just exhaust valve are/is sticky often due to the cold and of course some carbon build up. The way he explained it the exhaust port allows that particular valve to get more "weather" thru the exhaust pipe. His words , just repeating. And upon load will present itself. Our 96 2.2 had the same problem as first post. We would get on a highway entrance ramp near our home and same thing all the time. Pull over and as stated above it'll correct itself. Reason I had mentioned the coil pack was I just solved a similar issue on our 95 Impreza 1.8 but that also involved backfiring. I guess if you feel it's the cylinder 4 thing try as mentioned above. We had a couple accidents with that car so we let it go before ever truely solving that issue. As mentioned - valve job - or just try the cheapy methods first. MMO might help.
  7. Ok well i tried .... Let us know what you found instead of letting the thread die off , please. Cheers!
  8. Or could be the coil pack has a slight crack you can't see. Undr load it shows. Not under load you'd never suspect you have any problem. I've run uphill with low gas and I believe you don't really have a problem with 1/4 tank on any hill.
  9. I don't recall going to the other Harry's other than the big dog Hazelton. Should be fun this spring.
  10. I wonder if an EA81 or EA82 FWD Turbo would help you for the final drive. They are a small percentage of turbos of course. But you will find more of them than EA71 transmissions from an FE.
  11. My 92 legacy is holding up really well here where we have used chemicals for quite some time now. My 78 is getting by because it WAS rust proofed but spots of the protection have been "salted" away. The stuff helps save lives. We've got to cry less about our cars. Yeah , I cry too. But here's my example. I got to my storage unit at 6:20am today. Took a nap in the car. Previously the roads were perfectly dry. During my nap a mist/drizzle began but the temps were perfect for ...... Evil music please .... BLACK ICE wooooo , that was scary!! Driving home was slow with accidents everywhere. And UN Freakin Believably the state trucks neglected to treat the roads ahead of time as usual. The icy northeast is like the upper Midwest. We start treating the bridges etc when temps freeze mid October maybe thru early April maybe. I got a 73 coupe brought to me across the country in the dead of winter by one of our great members here. Dragged thru all the states you'd expect are nasty in winter. Got to me crudded up with red clay , salt , you name it. We brought it over to the U Do it type of car wash and in like 20 degrees with a wind blowing 12-18mph the water just froze and cleaning it up was half assed and painful. Rant !!! Lol but yeah the trucks are all going to crap so they are seeing the light now , we hope.
  12. Let me know if you head back this way. Blue Ridge is just a gem !! I stopped in Jonas Ridge one time to meet Semie Mosely. Google him and you'll know why. Enjoy !!!
  13. Only the "FE" model here in the USA came with 3.70 as best as I can tell. The other five speed were 3.90 or 3.889 to be exact. Here the FE was a fuel efficient model with higher compression , different cam , and a taller 2nd and 5th gear in them. Perhaps you have a similar model? The small foil sticker is located at the side/top of the bel of the transmission. I have seen various editions but they all begin with T. When I dig up a parts manual I will have more info for you. That code 5GM is simply used to express a five gear manual. The true production code which identifies specifics is in that sticker. What model is the car this tranny is from? I have most of my manuals in storage. I will try to help but hopefully someone else has them handy.
  14. In my service manual it calls them "5GM" , but I think you are asking for the production code which would be on a foil sticker on the transmission by the bell housing. Sound correct? Info you may or may not need: 1st gear 3.666 2nd gear 2.157 3rd gear 1.464 4th gear 1.029 5th gear 0.789
  15. Glad you scored !!!! Great area for Subarus down there. Grandfather Mtn. ski run ??? Lol
  16. Jealous here ..... 18 or whatever it was last night really didn't feel so bad. Warm front coming , probably over you right now. Well you are getting me primed for a Spring run - EARLY if I have my way with the weather. Top needs right now: Front drivers door for our 99 Legacy sedan Anniversary Edition kind of funky green. Have to get the code. FWD five speed tranny for my 92 Legacy 2.2 Back burner: AWD automatic tranny for our ej18 Impreza wagon. Glad you scored well !
  17. SOA if you're looking as stated above you folks largely ignored the East Coast even while we were setting a prime example of the brand's abilities just a few miles from your HQ. And I can't speak for the west and the rest but your policies on older parts up until the economy went south left many of us out in the cold. I've had a great experience with one person from SOA. That in over 33 years of owning and driving six star cars.
  18. Is that Dave Powers? I was in touch with him for a crate engine like 10 years ago I have had good luck with ATK engines, FWIW Great find for the 73-77 owner who'd like a drop in on the shelf.
  19. Yeah great year to have! Should always be atop of the Gen I value list.
