  1. There might still be the original white plastic type still on eBay. There also exists a metal upgrade governor gear which a good dealer source guy should be able to dig out. That could conceivably take you a lifetime to wear out if you treat the car as novelty and not full time daily.
  2. Ok so who makes the hitachi kit with updated ethanol safe o rings etc? I'm guessing nobody.
  3. If you find the actual part you will have accomplished something very special. A few of us have parts manuals and I'm sure eventually one of us will post the part number. Keep in mind Subaru has newer superseded part numbers now and your local guy will likely find they are not available.
  4. Up above the modulator you replaced on the upper passenger side there is a governor. I think it's three 10mm bolts that hold it in place. Take that out gently and clean it as I'm sure it's gunked up from sitting. I had success that way with one of our automatic cars. You access that from the engine bay. It's toward the front of the tranny.
  5. Your heart will welcome a new brand real soon.
  6. Is that an 81 with dual range top mounted starter?
  7. I'd like to know for others if they allow cutting? Lots of folks would love the four light radiator support. It cuts out fairly easily. Four point steering wheel makes it GL
  8. Sunday morning - New Canaan - Caffeine and Carburetors Hope you can make it. I'll have my 78 wagon there.
  9. Might do one more run with the old '78 wagon soon. I'll post if we do , but it might be last minute. Probably the last woods romp for the '78 before I make some big decision on it. Or the Barrens run might make the decision for me.
  10. As long as this old thread has popped up I'll add my piece. I've been dealing with John and then Anthony since around 1997 and my brother dealt with John or worked with him previous to that. Those guys are super great and almost never make mistakes. But the young guys do. They indeed messed me up in a minor way but it screwed my whole weekend up , etc. not getting a seal which was indeed in stock under a super ceded number. John caught it and gave me an even better deal for the inconvenience. It's 2014 ????? !!!!
  11. I am looking for a rear bumper that is only for the Stage 2 1977 and 1978 4wd wagons.
  12. Everything is hard and frustrating when you're new to it. But I'm pretty sure you'll do fine and we're all here to help. Do a search of the appropriate forum for repairs? Might find some help there beforehand. As mentioned use a punch and hammer to knock out that pin. The axle has a countersink on one side of the hole. That's the side you knock the pin out towards. They recommend using new pins which you might get with your axle , but plenty of us reuse the old pin. On the wheel end you need a 36mm socket and big breaker bar and great to have a pipe that slips over your breaker for more leverage. Loosen that axle nut before you lift the vehicle and remove the wheel. I used to just crack the steering way right or left and be able to slip the axle out but you can undo the axle housing to get an easier swing. Check old posts or wait for the next guy. I'm fading out and don't want to tell you something wrong. But so far what I said all applies. Go at it !
  13. More oil pressure needed. Reseal or replace the oil pump. Get some good pressure up after you warm it up and if necessary give it some revs , don't be afraid , and you'll hear that last lifter quiet down once the oil gets to it. But of course it's a used Subaru so it's going to tick a little , crackle when you turn it off (exhaust heat shields) , and squeal sometimes.
  14. moosens@ yahoo . Com That's for moose Nova Scotia .... Seriously I'd love to hear some about what it's like up there these days. Back the Bridgewater was booming.
  15. Nova Scotia !!!! Welcome!!! We love NS ! Have a great time here and with your Subaru. Feel free to Send me a picture of your car up in the Highlands or maybe out near Cheticamp or Inverness by the water. It's been 17 years since we've been there. Cape Breton great of course but Halifax is a gem of a small city too.
  16. You can just loosen the top to the brake fluid reservoir too , but the bleeder will make it a little quicker. If you are going long term with this car get the box style tool for cheap.
  17. Be sure to mention you are already a vintage enthusiast. Stories like " I grew up with these ..." always help but don't ham it up. I had one nasty old bastid who wouldn't budge and told me I didn't know what he had , etc.... He basically didn't like me "out knowing" him. Say less , but show sincerity. Good luck! Sound like the good old local hoarding crazy guy. Every neighborhood has one.
  18. AMA road race series at NJMP Pine Barrens camping tonight and Saturday. We'll be all around Wharton State Forest Friday after 5pm , Saturday after the races - 6pm , and Sunday morning up until around 1:00pm. Those are the time slots we have to romp should you care to make it. I'll be in a FWD Legacy wagon so I'll be on the more packed main trails. But if you have 4WD you can shoot off at many places and challenge yourself and your Baru a little. If you want to join up please send a PM and I'll check in here Friday evening when we get there. If you think you'd like to make a run Friday night just head to the ranger station on Rt 206 in Atsion NJ for around 5-6 PM and we'll be near by or right there.
  19. Please post your finds ! Some of us old schoolers have scored rebuilt units plenty cheap over the years. Seen millions of kits. But I don't recall seeing those boots sold individually. So used or a kit.
  20. Sorry , you'll have to read your other post too. I crossed over info to this one but I'm pretty sure you're following your own posts and will put it all together. So step one , see you for the AMA races at NJMP And step two , get ready to hit the trails sometime soon. I'll take the boys in for a quicky this weekend but nothing hairy being FWD. Depending on the weather we might camp there Friday night, maybe the weekend too.
  21. No , re-read that. Races are motorcycle races at NJMP THIS WEEKEND !!! Yeeeeeeeaaaahhh!! What we do in the Barrens is basic trail riding with some abuse if chosen. They DO have races in there but as I know it only enduro style / hare and hound type of m/c and atv. See you soon , I'm sure. Paul
  22. Great story ! Except for the catamaran ! Glad to see vintage stuff in the northeast. Hope we get to meet sometime. We did a vintage small vehicle 4wd meet and trail run up near Albany a couple years ago. Enjoy !!
  23. Forget about clubs here on this coast. You've found us. That's all you need. We sometimes attempt to gather at meets like Carlisle Import Show , Wicked Big Meet , and few other gatherings usually invites from here and alike. I suggest you get a solid example very soon. Get it from the west , especially the drier climates. Spend around $700-900 for shipping and trust us , it's Worth it !! What you get here will require work well beyond that shipping money. Light scratches on that CrossTrek will buff out after you join us in the Pine Barrens. See you at the races this weekend. Cheers!
  24. Welcome! I'll see you at NJMP this weekend , right ??? Lol I'm bringing my son and at least one friend of his so I won't make them suffer in my 78 4WD wagon. We'll be in a charcoal grey 1992 Legacy wagon on Satruday. I get the infield parking and usually park down by the tv trailers where it's easy to meet Scott Russell. This year might be great in that Wayne Rainey is taking over the series and might be there this weekend. We do trail runs thru the Pine Barrens once in a while. BRZ might not be so ideal for that but a beater Brat - pre restoration is really fun !!! Enjoy ! Paul
