  1. Wait , there is a cheapy item you can buy and it'd be worth it to have it over time. It's a little box shaped tool that fits in a 3/8" drive ratchet extention. It has a few different shapes protruding from each side of the cube and you'll find one shape fits in those slots just fine enough. You can score one at your local parts place. Here's on on eBay super cheap !!! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Powerbuilt-Disc-Brake-Piston-Tool-648410-/291052998454?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item43c41c4f36&vxp=mtr And another !! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Disc-Brake-Piston-Tool-/111283498321?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item19e9036d51&vxp=mtr We're here to help. Really want to see you keep your ride and be proud of it rolling and stopping someday.
  2. No sweat. I'm totally unaware of where this is and lots more details.' Basically saying what you are , Jon. That the shell is worth that to a fellow freak like myself who actually has parts to help it, etc. So where is it?
  3. Is it a coupe or hard top? I can't remember right now but I think they are hard tops.
  4. I'd be one of the very few people that would pay $500-600 for an FE in the condition you mention. I have a windshield and a good amount of interior pieces. What color interior? Depending on location it's going to cost me from a few hundred to $1k for transport. But an FE should make money back in gas savings , not that matters much when buying a vintage novelty car. But I would use it often unlike a lot of people.
  5. No sweat , just that I personally don't have a whole lot of time lately. I'll help you out as will several of us who have already been down this road. This is the little slice of life I have for enjoyment , my little old 4WD wagon and the other vintage babies that have come and gone. I hope you get the same enjoyment out of yours. Subaru3 - todd is also a huge help but has been excessively busy/involved with a move up north , eventually. There's others who will help , you'll see. ...and the suckerking .... Currently working 7 days a week on the main gig and doing a second gig all 5 weekdays .... so , you can imagine who thin my time is. Family first , this stuff down the line. Cheers !!
  6. Pine Barrens !!!!! Welcome. I'll typically post that my son and I are going to the Barrens to do some Subaru exercise , fishing , etc.... Without looking I'm guessing you're town is up north ...? Enjoy the board like we enjoy the Barrens. Cheers!
  7. Jon , look for the R or L on the caliper. On my phone now and can't see with the shadow in the shot. Should be the end letter. CMJ - the lower bolt pulls out and the top one is the hinge. Those are 14mm heads. Try using a piece of wood or metal drift of some sort at the lower "ear" of the caliper. If the wheel moves you should be able to get it to swing out with a few good whacks.
  8. Right , I consider my old Subaru a po' mans classic too. My only point was that you wouldn't be short changed if you spent some on the body as long as it doesn't go overboard. We here have already faced that fact that these will not be Barret-Jackson etc. auction cars.
  9. And then you'd have about $7k into it and that'd be on par with the value.
  10. If you can get the body solid enough the rest is fairly inexpensive to improve or manage.
  11. Really sorry. When the seller did not reply to my questions I knew it was less than the cut off pictures were telling. Cut off shots tell you something right there. Good luck.
  12. Yeah , and I had that thought AFTER I began surgery. My loss of time , my gain of pain. Double Story of my life .... My brother's legacy , or his daughters , soon to be ours. Probably going to flip it come fall. Also , this pan has a gasket! But of course the dealer shows it doesn't , so I'm using the old one which came out pretty good. Will goop it up some too.
  13. Bridgeporter here ....don't be afraid. LOL Welcome! Cheers! Friend off Rt.67 , now has an older Legacy low miles ride. Haven't seen it yet. He also was a Forester guy until a low miles Honda came his way. He's got the luck lately for old folk cars.
  14. I'll dig out some manuals and let you know what I have that helps you. I have some Haynes too. Always used to keep one of those in my vehicle. But since I have doubles of certain factory manuals I now keep one of those inside. My Haynes are somewhere with the lot of maunals in storage. As the weather breaks I plan on blowing stuff out like crazy this year. I'm sure I have '77-79 covered. I'll throw in a Chiltons for free. Probably right around $20-25 grand total shipped for my package of the FSM for your year and a Haynes and Chiltons. If you score before I can hook you up , not a problem. there's plenty out there and occasionally you see them super dirt cheap,
  15. Thanks. That's another good idea. First thing we thought of here was a huge wire tie. Looks shouldn't matter. They just need to plug in the OBD and have no codes at all. The original problem was the speed sensor. I'm hoping this isn't that sensor. Having to drop the pan for all the electrical connectors is a pain in itself while working at ground level. This ordeal just adds more "pleasure" to it all.
  16. Yes , I know , thanks. The quest is to hold that sensor in place well enough to at least get thru emissions test. I will try the best I can and probably add a wedge of pine to be sure it doesn't back out and fail. Once past emmisions I could care less as long as it doesn't affect anything for driving. I still haven't researched what that particular sensor's function is. It's the rearmost lower. Neutral? Reverse?
  17. Thanks Gary , I might try that or a small strap with two small screws tapped in. Mostly need to get through emissions and I'll be all set. We won't have this car for more than the two years emissions , I'm pretty sure. Looks like I'll be dropping that tranny way down now.Going to turn into one of those extreme headache jobs I can tell.
  18. Geez , so many people calling me pSyChOtIc .... LOL , that's just a silly sub title thing the board allows. "moosens" is the name here and Paul in real life - whatever that is. Here's what I sent to "mikesbikes" Just a start to what I'd really wanted to ask. Any holes in the bed over the wheels?
  19. Yeah , don't sweat it. When I get to my computer I'll get those questions I asked to you. And , more importantly we'll help you get you new baby back up in value. Be thankful you have a career , or ??? which allowed you to throw yourself into this. As you've done , others are doing the same. Buying with their heart. Well intended. Talk to you soon, Paul
  20. I think there's at least four of us looking for that mythical excellent condition blue driver's seat like you are. Danny W is always asking me to send the one he saw in my storage but I always tell him its not so great , and I could use it too. You can swap that passenger side over but will have the hole from the release handle ( or is it the pivot?) , but that's so low maybe it wouldn't bother you. Can always do a patch job and again , being so low nobody should notice. Danny - "drivesubies" here , and "dannybreadman" on eBay does have a lot of factory parts and some seat covers on ebay. Maybe we'll all get lucky , since he hasn't gotten to all his stock last I knew , that just maybe he'll one day open a box and find a few driver's seats in blue. Best of luck to you!! Also keep in mind I started this thread to help folks by getting people to print it out before they hit a junkyard or source of any kind. The list is old and some folks may have fallen off of it . But items mentioned here are pretty much sure bets. If the person who posted an item finally got theres and didn't clear it out from the post you can count on the next guy needing it.
  21. Also , there was no room or lack of patience to get a vice grip on it , etc. Thinking back of course I'd rather have been more patient and bought a narrow vice grip etc etc etc ,,,, but let's not discuss that matter please. So , you think one of those JB's will hold that bolt in? I guess they have several types now. Any one best for that alloy?? those tranny cases are made of? Thanks for any help.
  22. Could not get the 10mm headed bolt to come out because the head was well weathered. Thought I'd try the cold chisel method but whacked too bluntly after thinking I'd just seen it turn a hair outward. The area I'm talking about is the rear-most sensor on a '99 Legacy 4EAT. This is in an effort to swap out the dreaded speed sensor harness which has a total of 4 harnesses in one. Three are metal cylinder type and this is one of them. If you are unfamiliar with what I'm talking about it's just a small raised part of the case to accept the bolt which holds the sensor in. It's located on the drivers side as the entire harness goes to 4 points on that side. The sensor is still in but freed up now. Just have to drop the tranny some to get it out because it's so damn tight inside the tunnel. Looks like the sensor seat is not affected. My day got wet , dark , and frustrating real fast so I can't say I took the best of looks at it but I really think I might be able to salvage this. I saved the small chunk that blew out.
  23. Would you like to see the questions I asked? Or just want to take it in and evaluate ? I realize you once owned one but several of us on this board have had our noses in these vintage Subarus for the last couple of decades. You might want to hear a bit of our observations of these vehicles as they are most often found 20 , 30 years down the road. Best of luck. I just hope the seller's very limited pictures weren't the indicator I suspect. FYI - Danny W. known as "drivesubies" on this board and "dannybreadman" on eBay can be a really great source for New Old Stock. The one thing I'll say here at this time is that I told the seller that it looks like all he did for it was drive by a cheapy autoparts store for the recent attention he claims to have given it. Hoping for a good outcome for you ! Paul
