My first Subaru----1979 Brat
moosens replied to NEPASubaru's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Take the little pins out of the wedges? Then use a punch or something and tap them. Better to tap from inside towards outside if you can get in there, and you can. Spray with penetrant first. Bolts as shown above. I've scored loaded rebuilds. Good luck! -
EA71 sputtering above idle
moosens replied to talldude's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Thanks! Did Ahnold legislate doing time for emissions offenders? Death camp for oil leakers? Lol Seen those pickup units on eBay around $13 FYI to all. -
Documented: The 1970 FF-1 Project car...

Good luck to the new owner! Cheers! -
I think we should ask Danny to fit one of those early 4WD bumpers up to a FWD later 70's (Stage II) to see if it fits for width. Mounting will be custom but nothing too difficult. Anyone else done this? Stage I 4WD bumper to Stage II any vehicle.....? And Danny , if you see this - you have a set of those from me back when you were here. We weren't sure at the time and I said take them anyways and we'll figure out what to do later. I'm at a point now where I really want to try those on my Stage II 4WD Wagon.

Don't modify it ! LOL Yes , fix it , and keep it healthy in the same state it exists. Enjoy , and we'll see you at Carlisle PA third weekend in May - OK ?? You can drive it up here for a Caffeine and Carbs meet if you like. Check it out and no I don't expect you to show but if you did you can park in a side lot and I'm sure you'll get as much attention or more than several lesser known cars that sell for over $300K. No kidding. But Carlisle is plenty cool enough. Cheers! -
MR Loyale , for sure you're better off vacuuming out but I did the cheeseball method and am happy to say it works plenty good enough for getting through the dead of summer. But yes , I agree and will likely revamp my entire system soon since the clutch is aging on the compressor and the obvious need to extract the humidity. I do notice the slight smell and inaffectiveness at start up but as mentioned it's a $44 blessing right now. So my message is if you're driving a car you're only expecting short life from or expecting to refurbish it you can get by cheap in this case. Kit is easy to work with. Granted I'm in New England not AZ but we're typically 80-90 degrees in the dead weeks and 90% humidity from end of June thru mid August or later. Good luck everybody!

'81 BRAT rear suspension helper - help! ;-)
moosens replied to 81MV's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Side note to you Owain , I'm disgusted with the new rates of the Postal folks here and I pulled the plug on shipping your windshield gasket until I could search some and find a rate that doesn't make this a loss for me. Seriously , its gotten that much. Hang tight and I promise I'm working on it and will do my best to conclude this week , maybe Wed. I've been working 7 days a week and some 2nd gig work too so please pardon the tardiness. I sometimes get caught up in these shipping funks but always come through. Cheers! This problem mentioned is happening to many of our vehicles. Mine is a victim as well. Haven't had anything drop out of the car yet but the rubber is shot and the whole stability seems at risk. But its still functioning well so I'm just pressing on until I make a big decision on wether to advance with this car at all or just move on. Anyone know if those are the same pieces carrying forward onto the next Gen.? -
79 GL Wagon front end crunch-need some parts
moosens replied to def's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
GL as in four headlights? Regular chrome bumper or you looking for the 4WD optional iron 2x4 with the loop? Sounds like you have a 4WD from the two fans. Danny W - "drivesubies" on here and "dannybreadman" on eBay has some new parts that would help you. My storage is hell right now but I could in the near future help you out too. My stuff is mostly good used - no junk , no rust. The radiator support can usually be banged back to decent enough shape so everything lines up well enough. All depends on how bad it is. You can cut and replace those as well , and Danny should have one. You'll be ok soon , I'm sure. Doesn't sound too bad. -
79 they went to a wider case engine where the pump no longer pumped through the external duct you can see on top of the narrow case engines preceding yours.

The square bumpers are pure hell.

Wow , super sweety from the northeast. Enjoy !!! .......and don't do anything to it !!!!!!! LOL -
Yeah , Skip from this Board did that too. We have some very good Y pipes up here in CT still over at ctsuba's place. Some are a little different from automatics and 2WD's , but can be made to work in general. You can make a Y pipe with old flanges. Even turn the flanges and use the two stud holes that weren't used for the past 30+ years. But the rest of the system is weak , starting with that center can just after the Y.
-
Finding stock or healthy aftermarket is getting tough. I'm not opposed to just having a shop fab. up one from front to rear. Anybody paid for that yet? I might have one more good Y pipe buried in storage. Right now my current Y pipe isn't bad. Mainly need the center can which is particulare to the 4WD wagon and Gen I Brat. Could use a better rear pipe - the long one with the cheese grater heatshields, but that's actually NOS I place on the car seems like a couple years ago but more like 5 , maybe. The chrome on the end heat shield sticking out the back end went bad almost immediatelty - that hurt but this car is about function first so ..... Not necessarily looking for the stock replacement for resto value ,etc.... Anything goes as long as it functions and is reasonably quiet. Than again , a little note to the xhaust would be inspirational ,as we all know. LOL Whatcha got ? Whatcha done or paid for? Thanks for any healthy input. Cheers!

moosens replied to Jessekrs123's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Glad its much better now ! You doing any local meets this year? Don't forget - Caffeine and Carbs down in New Canaan - your Brat will be appreciated - just park in a side lot along the main run like I do. Last three of the year Sept , Oct, and Nov. Hoping you or some other vintage Subaru makes it there. Meanwhile , I'll try to get up to auqaberry too. Right now my exhaust is LOUD !!!!! -
Check the Bargain News , goes by another name in NY but google it and you'll find plenty listed. It'll give you a real perspective of local sales. Early ones - check the owner got the headgaskets done. Good luck.

Return of the Pedal Box monster
moosens replied to moosens's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
My syncros thank you ! Lol Surprisingly I did not have much nastiness when I drained the tranny I'd suffered along with. But I know they must look worn , those syncros. -
Cracked another one. This one was repaired previous to my owning it. I put a 4 1/2 in. piece of mahogany wedged in just so but even with full adjustment its a BEAR. I'm going to tear this thing apart .....soon. If you go thru clutch cables and/or have trouble with your pedal being excessively stiff , can't keep it adjusted , etc..... check the pedal box on the far left for US cars and alike. Just below where the pin is for the pedal (pivot). Right where the cable mounts to the side of the pedal box. Good luck with yours.

Pete you should just sell the car to another CT resident. I'm going to make a bumper sticker for my 1978: CAUTION THIS CAR BURPS and FARTS !!!

Gen 1 4WD leaking shifter shaft
moosens replied to SUBARU3's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Jesse , I know you see this thread ..... LOL Don't forget that seal these guys are talking about. -
I've got one here: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/138115-ea82-loyale-1985-94-water-pump-new/?hl=%2Bwater+%2Bpump It's boxed and in my car ready to go. Contact me at moosens at yahoo or if you like just pay same address at paypal and I'll get it out later today - if you see this soon - or tomorrow AM. Have two good 10mm box/open wrenches for the fan and some penetrant spray and some patience. I used to have some sort of trick or little thing that helps but damned if I can remember now. I know they can be a nuisance so have a small vise-grip just incase. Oh ! , good size screwdriver to stop the fan while you manage the 10mm nuts. You'll figure it out , we all did. LOL
