  1. the solders on the circuit board get stress cracks that corrode and break connection. You will have to resolder the connections on the board. All you need is a bit of solder and a soldering gun, you can redo the soldering while in the car, or you can unsolder the 3 wires then do it in the house. You just have to remelt the solders, no skill required. Theres a write up somewhere, and I had the EXACT same problem as you.
  2. I don't see why you can't tow a part time 4x4. You can't tow awd or full time 4wd, but when you are in 2wd, the rear end is disconnected as soon as it enters the tranny. It would be spinning just like when you are driving it. The tranny shouldn't need to be cooled because there is no torque on the gears or bearings, and no torque converter etc slipping, and so very little heat buildup.
  3. if that guy with the lowered 4x4 put in an rx tranny then It'd be alright, since you can actually use that on the street where it belongs.
  4. the "side effect" of turboing an engine is the increased compression, the real gain is provided by providing more air to the combustion chamber allowing for more fuel to burn. compression doesn't change the amount of air it gets, it changes the area that that amount of air gets compressed to after the intake valve has closed, and the spark plug is about to go.
  5. didn't figure he'd get a response tonight, so I figured I'd give him what I've picked up on the board. It's not like he was going to do it overnight. I've never done the tranny swap myself.
  6. superrally volvo I think had some problems with linkage clearance with his 5 spd 4wd into a 2wd (I think) turbowagon. It needs Jerry's kit for a crossmember to fit the 5spd tranny in I hear, or you could adapt/make your own. Any clearance issues can be solved with a hammer, or spacers to drop the tranny down slightly, or lift Don't know anything about the clutches, I think you have to mix and match ea82 and ea81 parts, but thats as far as I know.
  7. I'm pretty wicked at drawing cars, used to have a scanner but it's too much trouble to hook up, one o them old serial port ones with windows 3.1/95 drivers. Don't think I could get it to work with win2k pro :-p Can draw portraits and landscapes with some skill, but I'm hopeless at animals, figures of people etc. Not much at comic kinda stuff. Basically skilled but not really creative I need to find a scanner and get some usmb photo space. Or maybe steal my sis's digicam.
  8. the compression makes little difference in how much air you can get in there. A change in piston size will make a very small decrease in volume when the piston is making it's way to the bottom, which is when the air comes in. However at the top the difference is larger, because the overall volume is much smaller. Small % diff at bottom big % diff at top. You will get a tad less volume, but ALOT more compression. Putting a turbo on doesn't increase volume, volume is a measurement of space. It puts the volume under pressure, meaning more molecules are pushed into the same volume, so that you have more oxygen to burn with. Pressure can be looked at as a larger volume forced into a smaller volume, so in a way you are right Miles, it has to do with volume, but it is also in a way directly about pressure. However we are also talking about 2 pressures. The turbo pressure increases the amount of air molecules, allowing more fuel to burn per ignition, whereas the combustion pressure pushes the molecules closer together so they basically can react faster and more violently. The problem now is that the turbo pressure affects the combustion pressure, as the volume is starting at a higher pressure. This raises the compression pressure, as the piston now has to force a larger amount of molecules into the same small space. To know just how much boost raises the compression would give a better idea as to whether high boost or high compression is better. To increase both would be ideal but we are limited by octane, head gaskets, and the botttom end. whew. Some of that may be a little obvious, but I'd like to get all in one shot.

The roofless flat black celica, the t-topped and flamed delta 88, and 6" lifted turbo wagon, my old MGB GT with a passenger operated fuel pump, cycled by repeatedly clicking a switch Oh and can't forget the flamed riva 125 scooter with dirtbike tires!
  12. welding half shafts aint half as bad as welding tube driveshafts as far as imbalances. One they are skinnier, so an imbalance will have less effect, as since the shaft is smaller there is less % deviation from the center than on a tube shaft. Second they weigh less and so the vibration forces are smaller, and third they are shorter. The only problem is that since the diameter is smaller, the torque is distributed on a small area close to center. This means you have to maximize the weld area best as possible, or go to a larger diameter where the force is more spread out.
  13. If my long travel suspension goes through, I may cut right past the bottom corner of theback doors, then weld in a piece to cover the exposed gap between the 2 layers of sheetmetal on the door. Then a sheetmetal flare welded to the body. I may not need to go this far, but this is the plan if I do. There is quite a bit of room before you hit the rubber door seal.
  14. the differences are that with ea81s there is less electronics and no timing belts, and a higher intake (which can be remedied with ea82) making them better water crossers. An ea81 wagons overhang isn't miles better than the ea82, but the ea81 hatch is much better in the back. The ea82 5spd DR actually has a lower low range 1.59:1 vs 1.45:1) than an ea81, so in that respect it is better. You also have the option of fuel injection, and more power. I haven't owned an ea81, but I'm happy with my ea82 wagon. If soobies arent too rare, keep looking for a dual range 4wd wagon of any kind. The ea81 wagon you show has no low range, and your ea82 is 2wd, both cars would take a bit of work to convert. In general for 4x4ing get an ea81, it will be cheaper as well.
  15. apparently honda accord springs fit into the coilover and will raise the back up a bit and give a stiffer rate. not sure what model, someone else may know. I notice even with 4wd coilovers the back is kinda soft.
  16. theres a writeup in the online repair manual. You will likely only find 3.7 lsds, You can then do some grinding to the 3.7 case and put in a 3.9 r&p.

How about welding the rear diff, and burning out of my driveway while the diff was still hot, and the last bolt hadn't been tightened because I was late for work When I got to work, I took a big wide turn into a parking space, and ended up in the rock garden next to it. Left it there to move it on my break, but I couldn't drive it home cause I broke the rear lift The diff made funny sounds after that too. The next stupid thing occured up harborview trail, where I drove into a puddle that was actually a water filled crevace between to big slabs of bedrock. The front intake side was about 6" over the hood, and I had the stock intake on Got it to run again, and then we started hearing this occasional knocking sound underneath the car. I looked underneath and saw the exhaust rubbing on the driveshaft. Do I figured we bent the exhaust. WRONG, the driveshaft had somehow been pulled out of the tranny splines, and bent. The driveshaft proceeded to flip over and smash the floorpan up. So we took out the driveshaft (the splines were f'ed) and continued in 2wd. By the time we got back it was running on 2 cylinders with barely enough tranny fluid to still move. This is all the old t-wagon mind you, not the one I got now.

  20. hmm so the 2 lugs can break off. I've been putting around with 2 lugs on, no ill effects. No jumping or rocky stuff either.

  22. I've driven my car in the dirt with 30s in the front and the stock ones in the rear. I could move around fine, I never got locked up, And I doubt that it would happen in snow. The tires will scrub before the car stalls, maybe not on dry pavement though.
  23. maybe it's because his own son was involved I've met cops on illegal trails etc a few times, stopped and chatted, and the cops go their way pretending they never saw me. However if they get a complaint they have to act on it. Kind of related, Once my friends and I met a cop up in the woods on a closed off trail, who had been called to investigate mysterious bones that a hiker had reported. The ******* hiker didn't realize that people hunt around there, and that they were obviously deer bones not human The cop knew what they were but the hiker was right there so he played it up as if it were a possible lead to the Jessica Adkins disappearance. He was barely able to contain himself. He wasn't even bagging them though, just chucking them in the trunk! It was almost like a scene from Super Troopers
