I have an intermittant set of noises that come from the front left wheel of my '97 Outback. 2 separate mechanics have had the wheel apart as far as (but not including) the bearings. Both mechanics are reputable and tell me that everything is fine. Of course the car won't make the noises if you go anywhere near the mechanic... It goes like this:
Sometimes a gradual or sharp right turn will produce a rubbery sounding squeeking. It is speed sensitive and does not change when you step on the brakes, except that the tone will change as the car slows.
Sometimes on a reasonably sharp right turn, usually at a higher rate of speed (lets say 45 mph) there will be a grinding clunking from the same wheel. It does not clunk and squeek at the same time. Accelerating while turning definately makes the sound louder. I think the two sounds are related.
The car will not make any noises until it's been driven for at least 5 minutes. It may or may not continue to make noises as it is driven more. I would consider the tie rods since they will click or bang if you turn hard enough, but where is that squeeking coming from? And wouldn't a mechanic find movement when checking the front end?
Any ideas are appreciated. I would like to at least know what's making the noise before we drive somewhere in winter weather!
