oil pressure trouble
john in KY replied to KoolKatKodyJack's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
A chance the previous owner installed the wrong oil pressure sensor. One works with the light and the other with the gauge. They don't interchange. -
determining LSD gear ratio
john in KY replied to szybura's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It is a 3.70 if it came from an older Subaru. If from a newer Legacy, who knows? -
turbo wagon issue...again :p
john in KY replied to wagaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The knock sensor is sort of between the turbo and throttle body. Closer to the TB and easy to overlook. Screws into the block and only has one wire. vibration more than likely from a failing driveshaft. -
Get some of this stuff. May take a week to dissolve the rust but it will given enough time. http://www.kanolabs.com/google/

That's it. Not worth it IMO replacing it. Just get another used alternator.

It's part of the alternator.

I am replacing Timing belts and Tensioners!
john in KY replied to Bandit987's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'll add a few more tips. Loosen the camshaft sprocket bolts before removing the timing belts. The bolts you will be working with are small and easily broken. Go easy on them. Been my experience the 3 most important gaskets to replace to stop leaks are the oil pump gasket and the O-rings behind the camshaft sprocket housings. -
Replacing the complete door/doors is the easy way. It is an unbelievable pita pulling and reinstalling the windows and all the associated hardware and then you have to do the adjusting. Been there and don't want to go there again. Windows also require a relay. Have no idea where it is located in a Legacy.

XT seats for the Turbo Wag!!!!
john in KY replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Seats will swap but will be much lower. May have a problem seeing over the dash. How are the front fenders on the XT? Know someone looking for some. -
OP talking about the injectors. Almost sure they are fired in pairs.

free a stuck caliper piston
john in KY replied to Uberoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Unless I tossed them, I should have a set of front calipers back in the corner of the garage. You can have them if willing to pay shipping. PM me if interested. -
Help with CV Carbs (motorcycle)
john in KY replied to lostinthe202's topic in Non Soob Cars and Bikes Discussion
Where is all the air coming from to support idling at 7K rpms? I'd determine if the butterflys are open or still in a nearly closed position. If the butterflys are in a normal position, then major air leak downstream of the carbs. If butterglys wide open, then determine why. -
Contact Edrach if you decide to just replace the pump. He has a good one.

86 Subaru GL wagon transmission
john in KY replied to travis1990's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
May want to check the vacuum line to the modulator before swapping transmissions. -
It is the rare 87.5 model and the transmission is the 4EAT. Will also have the spider intake manifold.

Issue with '88 GL10 wagon
john in KY replied to Christred's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My thinking is the engine has an air leak downstream of the AFM and as a result has low rpm power. Reason engine seems to run well in reverse probably due to torque multiplication: reverse gear geared lower than 1st gear. -
All 4 cylinders full of fuel?
john in KY replied to Mr Whiskey's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Check the fuel pressure regulator. Pull the vacuum hose. If fuel drips out then replace the FPR. Can't believe all 4 injectors opened for some reason but i guess anything is possible. -
If you really screw up the intake manifold, I have a spare one you can have for the cost of shipping.
-
No. My XT6 essentially has done the same thing for the last 11 years. Replaced the pump and the sender and that changed nothing. The HLAs have never developed the TOD so regardless of what the gauge shows, I know the engine has oil pressure.

1989 GL Sedan - Dead AT or Diff?
john in KY replied to cocheeze's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This is a FWD model so no need to swap differentials. Also the FWD turbo transmission will have a 3.54 differential ratio. Not sure anymore about the axles but still think the turbo and NA axles are different.
