This was my 1st rally cross and I wanted to take my Forester out so bad. Especially after seeing how slick the course was. My tires would have been perfect for the course and probably would have done well. But I couldn't because I have a subwoofer in the back that isn't mounted and I couldn't remove it because My amps and cd changer are mounted to the back of the subwoofer. With all the wires connected to it. I would have to remove most of my stereo system just so i could get it to pass tech. I'm going to bolt my subwoofer down and try the next rally cross. I really enjoyed spectating the Rally. I took over 200 pictures and got pics of almost every car. If anybody wants a picture of there car at the rally. PM me and I will email what ever I have of your car.

I ran out of gas for the first time on my 98 Forester a couple months ago. Because i thought there was enough fuel since my Low fuel light hadn't come on yet. Even though I was already below E and it usually comes on right before or on E. I was only a couple miles from a gas station i was planning on fueling at and my Low fuel Warning light came. Immediatly after the Low Fuel Warning light came on the car died. I thought Geez thanks for the warning. just a couple weeks ago I was inspecting my drivetrain parts under the car. I noticed I had a pretty nice size dent on the passenger side of the fuel tank. I think this may be the reason my Low Fuel warning is inaccurate. ever since I ran out of Fuel I consider the 1/4 Full mark as Empty to insure I don't run out again.

or how about just buying a Car that comes with a diesel. That would be allot easier than trying to put a diesel in a Subaru. If you put a diesel in a Subaru it wouldn't be a Subaru would it now?

Yeah I would like to see fog lights incorporated into the scorpion bumpers as well. Would also like to see receiver hitchs and tow hooks too. When Mudrat makes my bumpers. They will be a Tubular style and plan on haveing Smaller Foglights built into the bumpers. I think the Forester Fog lights are to big to put in a smaller Bumper.

yea I don't think it came available till 2000. I know it wasn't available in 98 when I bought mine or I would've insisted on getting one with LSD.

Man wouldn't that be something to see a Subaru in one of those challenges. -
No it would cost allot more than a $1000 to import a Forester Dual-range. Mudrat is taking ea82 dualranges and making adapter plates to fit the EJ engines. I'm currently working with Mudrat on doing that to my Forester. And it's going to be more than $1000 once it's finished. If you don't have Mud terrain tires already. Get those first. but Tire size will be determined by what kind and type of lift you get though. I thought you already had a 2" Suspension Lift. If you go with a lift get a Suspension lift and not a Body Lift. You won't gain any Ground Clearence with a Body Lift. A front Sump Gaurd is a good idea. your front Oil Sump is very Vulnerable. I already put a dent in mine as well as the gas tank. I haven't seen any Gas tank skid plates for Foresters Though. I do have a Rear Diff Gaurd that was a dealer installed option. It is real strong. I've probably saved my diff because of that. I have scrapes on it but no dents. Heavy duty bumpers is a good idea too. My rear stock bumper is pretty tore up and is barely hangin in place. I can't wait tell I get enough money together to have Mudrat make me some nice bumpers for it. Maybe sooner if I have any money left after doing the dual-range swap. I wouldn't get the LSD untill you put a Dual-range in it though.

Hey Rem14. have you ever tried Toyota. When it comes to reliability You can't beat a Toyota. I once owned a 85 Tercel and had 185,000 miles on the original clutch when I sold it. Only mechanical failure was a alternator around 160,000. I haven't had as bad luck as you with my Subaru. But It hasn't been perfect either. My Clutch lasted over a 100,000. I also had to do a engine reseal the same time. And I've been constantly getting check engine light codes for the last 2 years. But nothing as major as your Subarus. I also lost my ABS system about a year ago. Hey Scoobyclimbs. Nice Front bumper on your Outback. I haven't seen any good pictures of that. Mudrat told me about it. I Can't wait to get some Mudrat bumpers on my Forester.

I see you had the camshaft sensor replaced. Why? did you get a code for it. I'm Having the same problem with my 98 Forester. I got a code for the crankangle sensor over a year ago and replaced it. Then over a month ago I started having the same starting problems as you when the temperture droped to freezing. I got codes for crankangle sensor and camshaft sensor. I replaced both and the dealer said they recommend replacing both sensors even if you get a code for just one. I had a one year guarantee on the crankangle sensor. You probably have a one year gaurantee on your camshaft sensor. If you get a code for one of those sensors. replace both. You will only have to buy the crankangle sensor since your camshaft sensor is only 6 months old. After I replaced the sensors the problem went away for a couple weeks. Then I had starting problems after car was sitting over the weekend. I still get codes for the crankshaft sensor and/or camshaft sensor after I can't get the car to start. I'm thinking of replacing the wiring harness next.

Yeah you have 2 cats. But the question is. If one is bad. Which One? I don't know how you can really tell if they are bad or good. You may end up replacing both at $300-500 each. I am real curious though if your check engine stays off after replacing the cats. keep us posted. I've been getting the 0420 code on my 98 Forester and currently have 120,000 miles. I've been getting the code for over a year. I recently bought my own scan tool and get the code about once a week. I've looked over my exhaust system and can't find any holes. And my cats are beat up from off-roading but are intack. I'm thinking of deleating my Cats altogether.

I got a 2" lift on my Forester done by Mudrat79 on this board. He just modified my struts to get the lift plus it gave me more room to put on larger Mud terrain tires. He can do the same for the OBS.

how do know if there is a leak coming from the filler tube? Can you see it? I've been getting a 0440 code(evaportive emissions below threshold) about once a week on my 98 Forester. And usually accompanied by a 0420 code. I've crawled under my vehicle and haven't noticed and leaks. But noticed I have pretty nice size dent on the bottom of the fuel tank from off-roading. Is the filler tube common for leaks? Do you think I have the same problem or something else?

yea the lift I have is a 2" suspension lift by mudrat.

I couldn't agree with you more on your new Brat Idea. I thought the same thing and made a couple new brats myself out of 1/64 scale WRX's. -

The tranny is a ea82 5-speed dual range out of Loyale 4wd. You can probably pick one up at a junkyard in your area. You will also want the 3:90 rear diff gears. You could get those from the same vehicle or get the 3:90 gears and Limited slip from a XT-6. Mudrat can make you the adapter plate and send it out to you. You can email mudrat at mudrat79@hotmail.com or call him at 541-206-2494 for more details on other parts and mods necessary to the conversion. In a couple weeks my Forester Dual-range conversion should be complete. We should have some pictures and I'll let you know how it performs.

Sounds like you used the Scorpion springs for your lift. I realized that would be a problem with that lift. This is Exactly the reason I didn't use that lift. I was thinking the same thing as you about getting the tires away from the struts. I've learned this is a bad idea. It will be hard on your wheel bearings and the tire will probably hit the fenders during up travel. Mudrats 2" lift gave me an extra couple of inches to fit larger tires under the struts. I'm running 215/75 15's mud terrains which I think equates to 27". I couldn't run these tires before the Mudrat lift or they would rub on the struts. I think they would also still rub on the Scorpion lift as well. Also I think 27" is the largest tire you can run with the 2 inch lift because when I turn my front wheels they come really close to rubbing on the fender well.
