  1. Ok, an update for you all. I had a new OEM axle installed in the car on Friday and the noise got WORSE. So it looks like the diff is definetly done in. I picked up a diff and trans from 98 2.2 car on Saturday and it is here in my garage. Thing is, is does not look like my 95 diff and trans but that is to be expected. I guess the speed sensor that is on my trans is now internal cause I do not see one on the 98. I gather this setup is a Plug and Play? No wireing to be done? Everything just plugs in and attaches? Please tell me yes cause this job has been a good headache that I would really like to get rid of. Is there anything that should be done to the trans before it is put in? Seals? Sensors? I remember reading about a selinoid in the tail housing of the trans? Thanks again everyone, Mark
  2. Just took the car out again in the snow with the FWD fuse in, the light must be burned out cause I spun the wheels on the ice just fine without the back hooking up. Clicking noise still there. Got a new OEM axle coming for Friday and am going to have it installed. More news then.
  3. some news, I put the FWD fuse in like Fairtax suggested. The book says use the spare fuse, mine is gone so I do not know what the voltage should be. I started out with a 10 amp and worked up to a 20 and the FWD light on the dash never came on. Took the car for a ride and the noise is still there. So I am thinking the car never went into FWD? Checked out the 98 Diff and trans at the boneyard and the code tag for diff is gone. I trust these guys so the trans is a backup in case I do not find anything else. Next thing I am going to have the mechanic do is change the right axle again, the noise still seems to be coming from that side. At this point anything is possible.
  4. Fairtax, did not try the FWD fuse yet. I am waiting till this storm gets thru here on Wed. before I do that project.
  5. I was just out in the snow with the car, pulled out of the drive and the right axle spun just a bit and then took hold, made that clicking noise with the wheels turned to the left. The sound seems like it is coming from where the axle meets the dif/trans. Maybe what I ought to do is pull that axle again and get another new one and see what happens. I found a dif and trans at a local yard for a real good price but I am told by my mechanic that it will not work in my 95. It is a 98 2.2 auto trans. I do not know what model it came from, but the guy behind the desk says it will fit from his info. My mechanic says only a 95 or early 96 will fit in my Legacy LS 2.2. I am totally confused now, who is right? You guys, the junkyard or my mechanic that all he works on is Subaru. Thanks for your help as always, Mark
  6. Gary, the diff does not have any torque bind that I feel, other than the clicking noise the Diff and trans works great. I am going to call the mechanic and see if he will change the right axle again to see if it is possible that the new axle he put in that side could be the problem. It was a new axle also, not a rebuilt. Calling more boneyards this afternoon and getting more prices and crossing my fingers..... Mark
  7. My mechanic is saying that the diff is going in one of our cars, 95 2,2 LS Legacy. He changed the right axle and for a while the clicking noise went away. Now it is back on the left side and he changed the axle with a known good one, a rebuilt and a new axle, noise still there. He had a bore scope put in the diff and found no damage but the noise is still there. The diff makes noise going straight and on tight turns at low speed and high, but after a while driving the car the noise almost goes away. Driving along the highway or country roads you would not even know there was a problem. So I am going to look for a used diff and trans just to be ready when the time comes to replace it. I have found a 97 Impreza 2.2 for parts with a good trans and diff. Will this work in the Legacy? If not, what other cars will work. I know that it must be a 2.2 car because of the gear ratio, 4:11. One other question. Can the diff and trans in the car be sent out for rebuild or is not cost effective? Trans and diffs around here are anywhere between $300.00 to $450.00 at salvage yards but are getting harder to find now. I hate to buy something at a you-pull-yard and it is in worse shape that what I have now. Most of the salvage yards will give a 30 day warranty but as you all know the you-pull's on on your own. Thanks all for your help, Mark
  8. OK now that I know that 95's are OBDll I am going to take the car to a friend that has just bought a scan tool for his shop that should read the code. I am leaning toward the speed sensor right now. I noticed that when I come up to a stop the speedo jumps up to 30 mph and then starts to drop to zero.
  9. will look for the handshake method in a few min and get the code when the car gets home tonight. No bind in small slow circles.
  10. This is our first Automatic Subaru, 95 Legacy LS. There is a ATF light that blinks on start up of the car, then goes out. I think it blinks maybe six or seven times. Anyone tell me what this is? Normal? Abnormal......? Trans seems to work fantastic, love the 4:11 ratio. Thanks, Mark
  11. I'm going to try to answer a few messages here. upnorthguy Thanks for the link to the fog light wireing. I probably unplugged the relay with out even seeing it. moosens There was a 99 sedan there that was a different color, like a British Racing Green. Not sure if that is the color you are looking for. I really didn't look at the outside of the car much, I was looking mostly for interior and foglight stuff. Harry's in Hazelton is loaded with Subarus. I found a 95 LS Legacy wagon exactly like mine there and spent most of my time getting parts from that. There were at least 5 more rows of foriegn cars that I did not even get to walk through. If you go to their website they do have a search function that lists what cars are in their inventory. Each car has a yellow tag on the quater panel that lists the year, model and color of each car. The search function also gives you a number of the car so that you can find it in that row. The one thing the search does not tell you is what condition or what parts are removed from the car. That would make the hunt to easy.
  12. Ok everyone, I did some yarding at Harry's in Hazeltown yesterday and pulled a dealer installed harness from a 95 Legacy LS. Also saw this same harness in several GT's, Sedan's and Imprezza's. The harness in the engine campartment is REAL simple, one wire coming from the firewall and a ground near the headlights. Under the dash it gets a bit more complicated. I think there are 4 or 5 wires tapped into the wireharness using Scotch Locks. The guy that put it into the car must have been double jointed cause that is how I felt after getting the last wire sperated under the dash. I could not find any relays for this setup. Next project is to get under my dash and find out if this could be done a bit easier, either that or take the drivers seat out for a bit more room. Harry's charged me $5.00 for the harness.
  13. Had this same problem with our trans in a 96 Outback. I drained and refilled the trans with fresh fluid, synthetic I can't place the name at the moment, I found the old fluid milky colored. A that point we just decided to run it the way it was cause the body on the car is REAL sad. The trans finnaly gave up the ghost, won't stay in 4th gear, 20,000 miles later. It made so much noise you had to turn the radio up. The same day the trans broke a huge chunk of the quater fell off so the car is now retired to being a field car. Car still runs and drives, ya just can't use 4 th gear. Amazing transmission!!!!
  14. Guess I am going to have to bring the doner car back up to the garage and get behind the dash to figure this out. I looked at the 95 again hoping I missed something up front, but no there are no wires for the fog lights in my headlight harness like on the 96. Maybe something can be done like run a few new wires to the front of the car from the switch in the dash to make this work?
  15. I have a 95 LS Legacy wagon and have a similar question. I am adding an 96 Outback bumper cover to mine. The doner car has all the wireing in place and I was wondering if I need to replace the entire harness or can I cut and solder the proper wires into place. I have not got behind the dash of the doner yet and got the cover off just yesterday morning. As far as I can see the bumper cover is a direct swap over so far. Just need to figure out the the wireing. Harry's in Pennsburg is a great place, only place better is their yard in Hazelton.
  16. checked the speed with the GPS, speed is actually 3 to 5 mph faster on the GPS than on the speedo. At 69 mph the GPS read 71 mph. At 55mph the GPS read 59 mph.
  17. we are going to do some Balck Friday running today so I will take the GPS along to see what the exact speed is. I wanted to go junkyarding but Karen has other ideas.....
  18. gotcha, I checked the tire sizer again and relized I read the info backwards. Maybe Karen will not get any tickets this way. Mark
  19. great pic fairtax. That is want I would like to do to ours. Now that I hear it is not a real big deal, I'll wait for this Noreaster to get through and start taking the Outback apart. I also want to thank Bushwick for that interchange link, It will make things a lot easier when I go junkyarding. Last night I put the snow tires on the car and took a few measurments of the ride height. With the tires that came with the car, 225-60-16 the height is 11" to the bottom of the rocker. With the 205-70-15 snow tires on the height is now 10 1/2 ". The stock tire is 195-60-15, so both sets tires are oversized and according to an online tire sizer the speedo will be fast by about 5 miles an hour. Give or take a few 10ths of a mile. I can live with that. Mark
  20. All, We got a new Subby, well new to us, in the garage. Not quite what I wanted but it is different. It is a 95 Legacy LS, Auto, sunroof, power all, 2.2 motor. The neat thing about it is that it has been lifted with the suspension from a 2007 Forester. It is just a bit taller that the 96 Outback we had. Car is very tight and has a real sweet ride to it. A 5 speed would have made it perfect, but beggars can't be chosers. We got a real great deal on it from a local Subby guy that treated us really good on the price. I do have a question though, since I am keeping the Outback for parts will the front bumper cover from the 96 Outback fit the the 95 without major work? I do like the fog lights on the Outback and the LS has a place for the switch to be added. Something different on a different car. Thanks all for the help so far, I am sure there will be more questions later........ Mark
  21. Guys, thanks for all the ads, we really need a manual car, auto's here in the Poconos get the heck torn out of them. Brakes especially, trans are next on the list. At least when we are going down some of the hills we can drop down a gear and use the engine as a brake. Going up the hills ya drop down a gear also and the semis are not pushing you to the curb. The last 3 Soobs were manuals and I would like to get one more. Weddes Repair in Klecknersville has a bunch of manual cars he would like to sell, some are mechanics specials, some are ready to go. I am heading that direction Friday afternoon or Sat. morning to see what Craig has. Maybe he may take the Outback in trade cause he is always looking for running 2.2 motors. Thanks again and I will post how we make out. Mark
  22. Some news. The trans let loose this morning for Karen on the way to work, she limped it home and still got to work on time. She said the the trans would not stay in 4 th gear for any period of time. I called the Soob yard and they want $400.00 and the core for a trans, 3-5 days to get it out of a car. Local mechanic says he can put it in for $400.00. The best part of it all is a big chunk of the quarter panel fell off this morning also. May want to cut my losses on this one. Maybe I can find something to put the 2.2 into......
  23. Thanks for the help all !! Gonna start asking around what kind of cars are in the yards and there is a yard that carrys a ton of Soobs in the next town but is not a pick and pull. Like Fairtax said I have been putting a synthetic gear oil in it and it does quiet it down a ton, and it is not popping out of gear yet. If I was the only person driving the car I would just leave it alone, but my wife drives this car to work everyday and you know it will break down when we have a foot of snow on the ground and she is on the other side of the mountain trying to get home. I'll let you all know how I make out today. Mark
  24. The trans in the Outback is giving up the ghost, the front bearing is really howling now. Can anyone tell me what years will fit our 96 2.2 Legacy Outback so when I go boneyarding I can get the right one? I thought about getting it rebuilt but would rather not put to much into the car cause the rear quarters look like swiss cheese and if I can get it through the winter 1 more year it is time to start looking for a newer car. Thanks in advance all, Mark
