  1. Just an update on this problem. I finnally got the car at a shop to replace the tank and just as we are going to the shop one of the rear brake lines blows. Right above the tank. So 2 projects are going on at the same time now. After the tank was removed we found the leak. A small crack in the bottom of the filler pipe on the tank. I was lucky enough to find a replacement tank at a local salvage yard for $80.00. The car it came out of had 69K on the odometer and the tank looks like new. The brake lines were replaced with copper coated lines and brass fittings. I can't wait to get this bill.......
  2. Previous owner had the clutch replaced about 20K miles ago. Car now has 171K on it. The problem is that the clutch releases smoothly most of the time but every so often it seems to stick and makes the whole drivetrain shudder. This only happens in 1st gear, starting out from a dead stop. I was wondering if it is possible that the cable is sticking or maybe the flywheel was not turned properly when the clutch job was done. I adjusted the clutch to the proper pedal adjustment and it did help some, but it is still happening. For some reason the hillholder was not hooked back up either when the job was done. Another project to get to soon. Is it possible the previous owner was a pedal rider and screwed up the clutch? Opinions? Solutions? Thanks, Mark
  3. My friend with the lift suggested a way of figureing out where the leak is. We are going to use his emmisions smoke machine and pump some smoke into the tank and see where it comes out. Next weeks project......
  4. Mike, thanks for the help on the phone the other day. I will keep looking around and got 2 more yards to check at just this afternoon. Thanks again, Mark
  5. new update on the gas tank. It turns out that my car is an early 96 car, the build date is 9/95. From what I am learning is that a tank from a 95 or up to build date of 12/95 will fit this car. After 1/96 the tank is different. What is different no one seems to know exactly, most say it is an emmisions thing. Can any one say what the difference is? I'd like to buy Mike's tank from his 97, but can I put that in and change the emmisions BS to make it work in my early car? The local dealership can have the correct tank to me in less than a week, but the $400.00 tag is about what I paid for the car in the first place. Just posting this to maybe help someone else out later on a search. Thanks, Mark
  6. Mike, As you can guess phone call did not happen yesterday. Give another time to call. I'll explain then. Mark
  7. Mike, I will give you a call on Sunday. Post if this is OK with you. Thanks, Mark
  8. No progress yet. I'm still driving around to empty the tank and looking for a replacement tank just in case. So far the only place I have found here is going right to the dealership and order through them. All the local salvage yards say their tanks are rusted through or they drilled holes in them to empty them.
  9. Your overheating problems sound just like mine when the head gaskets let go. My car had 271K on it at the time though.
  10. I pulled the plugs on top this morning, dry as a bone. I then jacked up the car as high as I could, pulled the right rear wheel and poured some gas into the tank to see what happened. As soon As I put fuel down the neck gas started to come down the side near the connection at the tank filler connection. As tight as it is in there I can't tell if it is the clamp that is not tight enough or the seam on the tank leaking. I'm starting to lean toward the seam. Before I poured gas into the tank this morning I noticed the guage was down and no gas leaking anymore. Also if I put the car on a front down incline the leak stops. No matter what I have to at least lower the tank to get a better look. I'll drive it around for a few days and use up some of the gas to make it lighter. A friend has taken pity on me and will let me use his lift after hours. more at that time, Mark
  11. anything is possible. I'll know more in the morning when I pull the plugs for the pump. I just got done looking for them and they are just about in the right place where I see gas running down the side of the tank. As long as work does not call I should have an answer then, hopefully.....
  12. I want to pull the plugs for the pump and senders on Saturday morning but I can't hope for much. We found it was leaking when filling the tank at a gas station with the engine off. I have an uncle in Richmond Virginia...... HMMM
  13. The new for me Outback has a leak on the top of the gas tank. I've already replaced the leaking fill pipe thinking that was the problem but when the tank was filled yesterday I found there must be a leak on the top of the tank also. Does anyone have a name of a vendor for a replacement tank or should I pay the dealerships price? Now for the big one. What is involved in replacing the tank? This is not looking like a driveway project without a lift. Any help is much appreciated, Mark
  14. Thanks a ton all!!!!!!! I will start hunting all this info down and get a spare soon. I just know the bugger will give out in the middle of a snow storm when I need the car the most. Mark
  15. What are you using for a pump on your car. Mine is still working but this fall I had to use the hammer handle trick on it to get it started again. The pump from Subaru is quite expensive and some aftermarkets are not to far away in price.
  16. Definetly go see Craig at Wedde's. They just got done doing head gaskets on my Loyale. He also does a lot of custom work like plain jane Impezas with STI under the skin. He has lot of used cars on the lot also.
  17. Just what it says, When letting out the clutch after a long stop the brakes seem tight, but release after moving, it seems fine. Car was just saftey inspected and brakes are new ceramic pads. If I do have to adjust it, What is the procedure? Thanks in advance, Mark
  18. Thanks Gary for the offer of the gaskets. My neighbor has a parts store and he recomended the same gaskets, those are the ones I used in the 2.2. I'll do a search for your articles on the intake. No need to repeat yourself when the search button is just a click away.
  19. Thanks for the advice Gary. You hit it right on the head (no pun intended) when you mentioned the head gasket cause that is what it is. On my way to work I stopped and pressure washed the engine compartment down and added some of that dye for the oil that shows up with a black light. Sure enough the oil is squeezing out of the gasket next to the block, not much but enough to ruin my day. I'm going to sit down tonight and make a list of the gaskets I need and get them here to the house. I just got done doing head gaskets in the 2.2 Legacy so I think I can do these also. Thanks again everyone, I am glad I can get the right stuff from the list again. Mark
  20. sure can. I've never posted a pic to this forum, is there a Posting software to use? Gotta go to work now, I'll check back again later.
  21. Thanks for the info on the PCV valve. I will check on that before I leave today. The spot I see most of the oil laying is on the right side of the front crossmember. There is a small indentation in it and the oil just seems to puddle there. I checked the oil level this morning and it has used about 1/2 quart in the last 15 days.
  22. Thanks, That is what I need to hear. ABS here in the snow is a real PITA. I'm going to take care of this tonight.
