Just for a laugh I measured some spots under my lifted Impretzel: 11in clearance to the rear diff and 10.5in to the oilpan. I realize that those aren't the lowest points under the car but they were easy to reach and easy to standardize upon if other people want to measure theirs to compare... because we all like a good measuring contest

Great little cars. Another ditto on the tires. It probably even says things about that in the owner's manual of the car. That's probably a 2.2L (ej22 engine) which is one of Subaru's very finest. And driven gently in that car should give you near 30mpg. If you're game to do some of your own work they're pretty easy to work on as well. You can change out an alternator on one of those in about 20 minutes with only hand tools, for example. Are there any records with the car? The only concern to look into would be the timing belt. If that has never been changed it is overdue in both mileage and age so maybe you can bargain that into the price a little. Ask more questions as necessary, there are guys around here far more knowledgeable and helpful than I could hope to be. Good luck with your purchase!

Well I finally manned up and got my impreza lifted! I've got a set of MEATY 215/70/15 snow tires on it now. I have enough clearance around the rear to not need the outback link brackets so I'm going to save those for a car that might pass another inspection instead of this poor thing. I also think I'll run it without the rear swaybar because my family completely dominates my time and it was almost all I could do to get just the struts swapped. I painted the car with an HVLP gun and some slightly thinned hardware store rust paint. The colour didn't turn out quite as OD as it was supposed to but again I don't have time to re-do it all again so it's close enough. Here's a picture for everyone's enjoyment/mockery: Thanks to everyone around here for inspiring and educating me so I could tackle this myself!

I like to pre-soak mine with 50/50 acetone/ATF mix, then wire brush the threads clean and then hit them with the pink juice again before putting the vicegrips to the nut side and cursing them loose. Sometimes i work the impact in there with a wobble joint... but sometimes you just have to cut the buggers.

I just had to bite the expensive bullet and get a new driveshaft from the dealer for my 05 Outback because of time constraints and lack of local used parts availability. Have you checked on www.car-part.com for a replacement in nearby states? You might be able to bag a deal with not much shipping somewhere close by if you're not in a hurry for the part. good luck in any case!

With no real rust on the body it might be worth the gamble even at higher mileage. Many people don't like the DOHC 2.5 (especially without service records) but you might get lucky with that one... or you might have to do a transplant into your rust-free shell. Many of us would love to have a rust free Subaru to work on. -
Are we sure that isn't a 1999 Outback? I have a 1999 Legacy in my yard with a 30th anniversary badge on the fender. The previous owner says they've been commuting in it for 10 years... and also you say it has the DOHC 2.5. Those signs point me directly at a 1999, not a 2009. The mileage, if your estimate is close, isn't very high for a 99 considering that's 14 years old I'm no expert on the subject but I've heard un-kind things about the DOHC 2.5, if the car was otherwise rust free and you could get a code reader on it I'd still be tempted to check it over...

The way I remember an STi launch being described (can't remember who, but it was a pro) was in the 4000rpm range with more clutch slip than you think you should be using. Obviously this is high stress for the drivetrain and I don't think I'd do many of them with my own car but it'll fire you out of the hole like a mortar. One thought I had was that you could maybe practice up on a dirt surface to get the feel without the whiplash or bogging out too bad.

My brand new-to-me 05 Outback has recently eaten its driveshaft and carrier bearing for lunch. Nasty vibrations all over the speed range and everything. Good times! Now, of course I don't really want to spend a king's ransom getting the car fixed so I'd like to know if anyone here has installed used or re manufactured driveshafts? car-part.com doesn't show any used units in my province but My garage cited this place as a source: http://www.wholesaleimportparts.com/Subaru_Outback_Driveshaft_2005.php

I also have an 05 Outback that has the typical wallowy rear end. I did a bunch of reading over at the outback forum and decided to buy a set of 04 spec KYB GR-2 rear struts to put in my 05 because they're supposedly valved a bit stiffer. I have the struts in my possession but not in the car yet. I hope to get them in there in the next couple weeks and I'll report back about the ride and handling. I'm sure once I get those installed I'll want/need front struts too. The struts in the car now have ~200,000kms on them and I'm pretty certain they are original to the car.

Welcome to Ultimate Subaru, I'm sure some more knowledgeable people will come along soon to talk with you about pistons and rods. I wanted to add one bit of unfortunately gloomy news for you though: your 03 motor is an interference motor. Therefore when the timing belt got thrown off you probably suffered valve damage. If I remember correctly these engines don't tend to trash pistons when the timing lets go like that so you could stick with the existing internals and do up a set of rebuilt heads with performance cams in them or something. Good luck with it in any case.

You know what's even better about salting roads? Here in Nova Scotia we dump an average of 280,000 tonnes of salt on our roads every winter and I've read that on average each tonne of salt used costs our province something like $900 in infrastructure damage and reduced life... So they get a huge bargain by buying salt at $65/tonne instead of some of the more advanced and less harmful alternatives that cost a bit more but would save massive amounts of ruination in the long run. Brilliant! Hate salt... so much...

Hey guys, I'm going to try bolting my own combination of things together to build a roof rack on my non-OBS impreza. The roof has the three mounting points on each side of the roof for the OBS rack option and I'd like to bolt my stuff to them but I have no idea what size the threads are. My best guess is around m6 but I could really use a confirmation from someone who knows Anyone know? please and thanks!
