  1. 2000 4 cyl OBW, auto trans. I need to replace the front O2 sensor. What is the best approach? In other words, do I remove the front passenger side wheel and approach from the side, or approach from the front? Don't have a lift, so I will be doing this in the driveway with ramps and jack stands. TIA.
  2. Ivan: We all enjoy reading your posts, but a little punctuation would make them considerably easier to understand.
  3. I put a set of BFGoodrich Traction T/A on a Subaru several years ago and they are the worst tires I have every bought.
  4. That is the charcoal cannister. You may have to temporarily remove it in order to install your hitch, then reinstall the cannister.
  5. Which code is it that usually signals the death or dying of the front O2 sensor? Is it a 420?
  6. I did this recently on my 2000 4 cyl OBW. I was never able to remove the lower nut from the top no matter how hard I tried. Once I figured out the proper approach from the bottom it was easy. Required about a 12" extension and a wobbly joint, aimed at the nut from above the external filter on the automatic transmission.
  7. Anyone in Virginia with experience on this issue? Here, they snif every two years and I'm due for an emissions inspection next month.
  8. For my 2000 4-cyl OBW, can someone please confirm that the AutoZone part that I need is a p/n 42009? It was out of stock and they have ordered one. I believe that it will be an 18 mm, but not sure. TIA.
  9. I need to chase the threads in the block before relocating my knock sensor to its proper location. (When I replaced it recently I was concerned that the threads were messed up, and rather than risk cross-threading, I positioned the knock sensor in an alternative location nearby.) 2000 OBW 4 cyl. Anybody know the thread size and pitch? TIA.
  10. How could an exhaust leak downstream of the second O2 sensor set off a 420?
  11. Also, I realize that at least for my car, the upstream sensor is technically referred to as an "air/fuel sensor". But I still don't understand why the dealer wants three times the price at which I can get it online.
  12. Thanks; on RockAuto the Bosch (OE 'type') is $23 cheaper than Denso (OE 'Style').
  13. I need to replace the upstream, i.e. pre-cat, o2 sensor. One supplier lists some (e.g. Bosch) as "OE Type," and others (e.g. Denso) as "OE Style." What should I get? Does it make any difference? TIA. 2000 OBW, 4cyl, automatic trans., 155k.
  14. Sounds to me like your tires may not be ideal. What do you have, and do they have sufficient tread?
  15. Found a used tire and as a temporary measure had the rapidly deteriorating tire on my car replaced with the used one with acceptable tread and of the same brand/model/size. However, when I returned home I noticed that the installer put it on backwards; i.e., these tires (BFGoodrich Traction TA) are directional, and it is on wrong. How big a deal is this? Is it simply an issue of noise from the tread pattern, or does it implicate the orientation of the belts, in which case it may be safety related? TIA.
  16. Have owned the car for 5 years, approx 70K. No accidents of which I'm aware. All tires replaced at the same time about 25K ago.
  17. 2000 OBW, 4 cyl, automatic, 155k. Left rear tire showing significant and markedly uneven wear on outer edge. Properly inflated. What is the most likely cause? TIA.
  18. I don't understand how the car could even be driven if the ball joint stud was broken.
  19. 2000 OBW, currently with 155K. Alternator went out at about 135K. Starter more recently.
