long time no post, need some advice on the Brat
garner replied to garner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
At least it's in the family.... here's the Brat from today, after pushing it out of the trees up our drive way.....that's NC in the back ground, and our Impreza I pulled the plugs, sprayed a bunch of "P B laster" and she turned easily by hand!!!!(wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt) Will get some oil and plugs (actually they look perfect) tomorrow, charge the battery, disable fuel pump and see what happens.... -

Connectors & Testing EA82T TPS Throttle Position Sensor
garner replied to M45's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Should be that the black is ground, the white should be voltage coming in to the sensor when the car is on, and the red should vary with throttle possition. Could be a wiring issue rather than the sensor itself. garner -
Lets see the brats.

Heres mine, It looks alittle dirtier right now -
Hey folks, I haven't been on here for ever but I really need some advice about getting the Brat back on the road. Here's the situation: I moved from OR to NC about 2 1/5 years ago. I brought my Brat of course. For those who don't know it's a 79 with an EA82T and a bunch of other stuff.... I drove it here for about a month but could not get my inspection sticker, bunch of stupid stuff, no horn, no backup lights etc. I parked it and bought a used toyota truck. Figured I'd get to work on the Brat after I got my shop built. 2 1/2 years later, the shop has been built for 1 1/2 but the Brat still sits exactly where I parked it. I have not done anything to it to prepare it for storage and I'm getting ready to get back to work on it. My question is: what can I do to prevent damaging the engine in starting it up for the first time in 2 years? I planned to pull the plugs and get some oil in the cylinders, flood the valve covers with oil to get some oil on the camshafts, turn it over by hand with a wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt. Then turn it over with the starter with the plugs out, then replace plugs and start as normal (hopefully) Anything else I should do? thanks in advance garner

if you "buy it now" shipping and handling is $5 (usps) he also sells them auction style and if you win, shipping would of been about $18.... garner nells, hit me up when you get in town.....

Hey guys, hope I'm not pointing out the obvious but there is a guy on ebay that seems to have a good stock of NEW Coverlay Dash Caps for Gen 1s http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/77-81-Subaru-Brat-Stage-II-Stand-NEW-Dash-Pad-Coverlay_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ40017QQitemZ8013202274QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW I bought one and just got it in the mail. Not cheap but Very well made and will make a great improvment once I install it (have to make a custom guage pod for it first) I should point out that the manufacture date is 8/05 so it is fresh, non-brittle plastic. anyway, hope this helps garner

I don't need no stinking TWE header!!!!
garner replied to garner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The header/up-pipe is working very well. boost comers on a bit latter than stock but at the higher revs, it pulls like crazy. If I did it over again the primaries will be smaller but for now, a huge improvement. In terms of building them, it would take an order of 10 or so to make it worth while. I have a Tig welder and access to sweet bends but still, it's quite a bit of work (even with a jig). I wouldn't even want to speculate how much they'd cost, especially in stainless..... garner -

McBrat, Man you can hardly go wrong in Oly National Park. Hands down some of the most beautiful areas the northwest has to offer. Ho River area has some pretty intense rain forest. Just pick any trail that suits your desired distance. More toward the coast there are a few trails through the forrest to the beach. I am very fond of the beaches on the peninsula, very unlike any of the oregon coast or cali beaches..... I'll try to remember to bring my Olypics hiking guide book to wcss7 garner

Yep, and thats for CUSTOM work!!!! garner

Ok, I'll throw my 2 cents in.... Buy it pre-built from rs-autosports. I built mine from a Glenns Garage kit and cooked a couple things while soldering. Stuffing and soldering a board are easy, trouble shooting is a total pain.....I spent probably 3 hours bulding the Squirt and Stimulator and about 30 hours trying to figure out what I did wrong when it wouldn't work If you do build it your self, take your time and follow the instructions to the letter, if you get hung up, post on MSEFI.com and get some advice, don't just take a stab at it and see if it works.... Most important, if you build it your self, use sockets for all the ECUs, these things are very heat sensative and get cooked real easy. Sockets will add about $3 to the cost of your kit. If you buy a prebuilt from RS-Autosports, its been assembled and tested by a pro who also uses megasquirt himself. He's on MSEFI all the time. Keep in mind regaurdlesss of DIY or prebuilt, THIS IS NOT A PLUG AND PLAY PRODUCT. It takes a lot of head scratching, reading and a fair amount of small fabrication projects. This is especially true of the EDIS portion of the install. I'm not trying to talk anyone out of it cause it's freaking awsome, I just dont want people buying kits and ending up frustrated with a $400 aluminum box and a wad of wire..... Highly recommend attacking fuel and spark one at a time. Trying to get it running on both from the start is diving in the deep end and makes for way to many variables in tuning. I started with fuel, as we all know, that is the biggest problem with performance out of the EA82T. I still haven't dialed my tune to the point that I want to mess with spark yet. It runs great, better than it did with stock ECU but still have a few areas to fine tune, such as cold-start (have to wait until winter for that) warm up enrichment and accel/decell enrichment. Above all, get the Megamanual downloaded and READ IT. Don't think that like assembling your new BBQ, you can just figure it out as you go. It's complicated stuff, made a simple as possible but complicated none the less. Once you get it installed properly, I can provide fuel maps that will get you started.... good luck garner

With both of your rigs he was doing a bit more than a standard tune up...No one in Eugene, with the possible exception of Gary's Subaru would touch the projects that make your two subarus cool, and that guy is not cheap. Again, these projects were not run of the mill. Can't expect a guy to know how long something like an LSD equiped DR tranny swap in a Forester is going to take. It's basically R&D. Not to mention the random unrelated problems/issues that turn up in a project like this...Most shops would charge time and materials for actuall time on project, John tends to charge by the project plus unforseen expenses such as a bad parts, etc. When you're around John's shop I swear his phone rings every 10 minutes with someone of the board asking advice or to be talked through some repair. It's like a free 1-900-ASK-JOHN Subaru advice line. I bet with no cell phone, his productivity has gone way up. garner
