  1. my 81 wagon is higher off the ground(before I lifted it) than my dads 01 obw was before we sold it. ej = expensive 5spd singlerange awd transmission cant hold a candle to a 4spd d/r when it comes to durability and utility off road ea81s are bulletproof, can hold up to the abuse alot better $300 for a running ea81 wagon in decent shape I have yet to see a 6" lift on a newer subaru you dont see pre-85 subarus everyday, my 81 sure has a lot more style than any newer subaru which is like every other car on the road up here. oh and to top it off, I can slide into trees and rocks(and trust me I have many times on the ice when I was playing ) going 15-20mph with little or no body damage.
  2. if you really want to save on gas, rip out every unused seat, bit of carpet, all the interior trim, insulation, power steering, powerbrakes, heater core, most of the dash, airbags, spare tire and accessories, start working out, cut off a leg and an arm and maybe an eyeball and a few organs, if you have a roof rack take that off, take off the rear bumper, all antisway bars and related stuff, take off everything behind the front bumper molding if you got a newer car with all that plastic in front, oh yeah take off the rear hatch, cut off the exhaust(after o2 sensor), remove every other none essential bolt from your drivetrain and body, if subarus have them take off your map sensor and put a variable resitor in the circuit. oh yeah might as well cut off your gas tank while youre at it, but ifyou dont want to do that, just never drive with more than a gallon in the tank. sooo.. thats what, at least 700 lbs lost and some parisitic loss reduced? oh yeah not to mention it will be more peppy and there will be considerably less wear on tires brake clutch tranny engine etc...
  3. well, once hg failure starts killing people they might recall it, lotta recalls dont happen unless someone dies..
  4. yeah I think i'm gonna go with the 28.5 swampers, they look pretty good on your wagon night eyes, and if your engine is mostly stock w/ a weber, I dont think I'll have any problems, i dont plan on rockcrawling, but climbing hills in the mud is for sure. thats what, a 4" lift on your wagon? it doesn't look like you had to trim much to get those tires to fit. but then again, 33s or 35s on a lifted wagon with no fenders would look friggin awesome, but wouldnt be good for anything but cruisin. this thing dont got close to the power of my jeep(what, 60hp? vs 205hp and 235lb torque?), but I sure want to take it where i've had my jeep and then some; not gonna happen without gears unfortunately :-\
  5. well I want to go with 30" because a lot more options open up for good tires at 30" and bigger, but I'm worried I wont be able to hold 55 or anything higher... but i might go for some 28 or 29" swampers or coopers. but then again I also want to be able to turn the tires if I get stuck in some major gumbo or deep snow, I've heard that with 28" or larger with stock gearing it can be difficult. lemme know next time you go wheeling I got a stock nissan pickup thats not too bad.
  6. yeah, well my rig isnt quite ready for mudding yet, but will be hopefully soon. weekend after next would work for me? where about is centralia? I'm kind of familiar with the logging roads around lonview kalama scapoose and klaskinie or however its spelled... I sure wouldnt go up on those roads without a cb radio tho... knowin my uncle drives log truck up there, I rode with him once...
  7. anyone have a shop/garage they want to let me work in for a little while? weatherman says were supposed to get anywhere from 2-3 inches of rain to as much as 7-8 inches in the next 2 days....
  8. wobbly? no... I'm not finished yet, all the blocks will be tied together with 3" or 4" channel, and that stuff is pretty heavy duty, you will see once I get it together. the lift on my jeep was made using 3x2 tubing of the same thickness, and i've jumped that thing and put it through some pretty extreme stuff and those blocks have held, and they arent tied together. on my soob I dont expect them to fail or even make it handle poorly once they are tied together, and theres 4 times as many blocks on there than on my jeep.
  9. yeah... I agree, I hope 3" channel iron is enough to tie stuff together, I wasnt able to get the 2" square tubing free. should i tie the blocks on boths sides of the car together too? I dont have any metal that long other than some 1 1/2" 3/332round tubing
  10. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50149 my progress thus far
  11. ok heres some pics... havent tied the blocks together yet, might not happen tonight. also the shock you see isnt connected, I was too lazy to try to break the bolts loose at the top right away(they wont budge...). also you can see where I had problems with the lip of the gas tank getting in the way, I was doing that late at night and it was a PITA with channel locks, didnt wanna piss off my neighbors anymore using the BFH
  12. my welder is going back to my uncle in a couple days, I cant start on the front untill tuesday so I might not have it, hoping for a bolt on solution that isnt permenant... this car is FUN with no shocks in the back...
  13. well its too late to try it now, but in 1lo the gear ratio is too steep to move the engine like that, you need to do it in 4hi or 5hi in 4wd.
  14. mine will engage sometimes when they arent straight, but I cant be moving, but it wont come out of 4wd if the wheels are turned or if there is any kind of bind.
  15. ok, as soon as I get batteries for my camera I'll have pics up, so far only got the rear in and all i have to say is oh my gawd, it sits as high as my jeep(3" lift w/ tires approx 31.5"), and its on the stock cookie cutter tires. my girlfriend already hates me, I finally got a car she can get into and now she cant, and my mom is gonna be pissed next time I take her grocery shopping... hopefully she wont want me to take her shopping no more I still need to find brake lines and shocks before I drive it around the street right now, right now its kinda fun driving it around but w/ no shocks the thing would be a nightmare at high speeds. I think I'm going to need help with the front if anyone would be available, I'm also losing my welder tomorrow cause my uncle needs it back :-(.. I'm at a total loss of whats the easiest best way to go with the strut extensions.
  16. meh... odds are trucks aren't driving on the weekends, maybe saturdays once in a while. anyways if you're gonna be driving up on logging roads and such, its a very BAD idea to go there without a cb radio. they haul rump roast and they use the radios to avoid accidents. just get a radio, turn to the channel posted for the road you're on and listen for their chatter and always know what milemarkers you're between. every half mile they usually say something such as "5 and a half going 6 on (roadname)" if they are heading to the landing or "7 going 6 and a half on (roadname), loaded" if they are heading back to the mill.
  17. what he said well I've only had experiance with my ea81 wagon, but from what i've read, an ea81 w/ the manual 4 speed d/r transmission would be ideal, probably a hatch. the ea81 is a very solid engine, and the hatch has a shorter wheelbase, and if you plan on going with oversize tires the 4 speed transmission is a bit tougher and has more friendly gearing. you shouldnt encounter much for drivetrain problems with body lift. but if you try getting a suspension lift and/or going with large tires you may end up eating through axles more often
  18. how do you tell if a distributor is good or not?
  19. its a waste, not only you lose some at high speeds, it will get VERY heavy if you do it like that. its a first for a brat but I've seen people do it to other cars. my advice would be to rather than do that, take off all the body panels, get that latex mold making stuff and make some molds and then get yourself some plastic or fiberglass or carbon fibre or whatever you want to use, it will be lighter, more dent resistant, stronger, more easily reparable than if you rhinolined the whole car. is it also kind of counterintuitive to want a car to look nice that you take out in the bush all the time? it is definately worth rhinolning the underbody and the floorboard tho
  20. swap motor for a junkyard one that turns over? it just quit running? one of my friends had an older fiat and it threw a rod and it just seized up, said it started ticking a few minutes earlier and then it just stopped and wouldnt budge. hope thats not the case.
  21. well if you have any, maybe try some brake fluid in the cylinders? I know that works on engines that have seized from just sitting but it sounds like your problem is differant.
  22. I dont think there would really be a problem if I hadnt ran out of beer... update: I've gotten the rear bolted up and almost ready to go, I'm just waiting for my friend to get back with the sqaure tubing he promised me to tie the blocks together, who knows maybe I'll have time to get the front done this weekend, but i have to drive this thing bright n early to school on monday regardless of its condition.
  23. well.. it was all fun, except the little plastic peice that connects the rod for the clutch master cylinder to the clutch pedal broke and i had to drive back to portland from tillamook with no clutch... boy that was fun once I got into some city driving.
  24. well unfortunately i didnt get any work done today, took the ol heep out, everything was all fun fine and dandy, and as soon as I get on the highway coming back and hit forth gear, the little plastic peice on the end of the connecting rod for the clutch master cylinder decides to break, ended up driving 60 miles back home with a fair amount of city driving with no clutch... i just replaced the whole assembly like two months ago cause I had the same thing happen... anyways as much as I hate to say it, without some help, I think my subaru project is doomed at this point, two vehicles broke down today, both of which I have to fix tomorrow, school starts monday, I got a god damn TICKET for not having an atv/ohv permit($140... god, those pigs dont got anything better to do) the front has to wait at least untill the next weekend because i have to drive this thing to school, but I just hope I can get what i need to make the rear end work right for now and get it together so I at least have a start on it. this is soo great, I take a day off from working on my car or doing anything to go out and play in the jeep, and everything has gotta stack up all at once. blah... well now I know its at least gonna happen
  25. I know its kinda little bit late to post something like this, but I'm heading out to browns camp in my jeep in bout an hour, if anyone can drop anything and wants to go call my cell 503-880-7316... its only me going in my jeep with a couple friends riding along. not planning on doing anything super hard core, just going out to have a lil fun in it before I sell it and get some good pics. trevor
