  1. this is what I could find... one with it open and on out playing in the snow, the other with it shut.. not the greatest quality either but its what I got at the moment. 81 gl wagon... I think they had it 80-81 and up till 82 for brats, but I have no idea
  2. lol... I bet he lost him when he turned left
  3. also as far as ground clearance, dont compare live axles to independant suspension. live axled vehicles are always gonna have a lower hanging differantial than something that has an independant setup. it doesnt meant a live axled vehicle is gonna get hung up on a differantal, because the suspension behaves differantly and the differantial is NOT in a fixed location relative to the rest of the body
  4. that is a total load of BS, aside from they stopped making jeep cherokees after 2001, jeep cherokees have live axles front and rear, and having owned a jeep cherokee both stock and modified, there is NO WAY a stock subaru could keep up with a stock cherokee, regardless of whoever is driving the subaru. subarus are better in the snow/ice, loose dirt/gravel and on the road, but on the trail, they cant hold a candle to a jeep cherokee in stock form. it doesnt matter if something hangs lower, what matters is the length and width of the wheel base, aproach angle, BREAKOVER ANGLE and departure angle. Also, grand cherokees, especially the newer ones are total wimps compared to the cherokees, especially cause they are bigger with a ************tier engine, but stock subarus dont compare off of the road.
  5. yup... my thoughts exactly, also mostly depends on the driver...
  6. lol yeah, it fits under the seat better than a roll of toilet paper I figured I wouldnt need the chiltons, but I got it just incase I might need to look at a differant model or see if it offers anything from a point of view... tho I'm doubtfull it will ever actually be of any help but yeah... $5 for the service manual, the how to book was $35 unfortunately and I wasnt gonna get it except i heard it was the best(I dont know what a good price for it is in crappy conditions... :-\ )
  7. I picked up a few books from powells tonight... subaru 1600 and 1800 1980 service manual, a chiltons manual for various years, and how to keep your subaru alive, from powells tonight, I havent looked through chiltons or how to keep your subaru alive yet. But I feel like a god now that I have the factory service manual, I cant explain how I feel right now other than I feel like I have the best tool of all. its 2am and I wanna go out and wrench and I'm like UGH I need to sleep, have no light, no money and almost none of the parts I need... I'm sooo friggin excited now that I can actually get things done efficiently I cant wait... well, I could wait untill its dry and warm out... anyone got a garage they would care to lend out?
  8. wow... bet the tires and axles and springs(and other unsuspended weight..) weigh more than the rest of the car... things high enough off the ground you dont need a jack, just someone underneath it to hold it up
  9. oh yeah, well everyones done that... its not really considered a "brushguard" though, more like bumper and tire carrier
  10. aw I guess they're not good nuf for everyone
  11. I'll research this in the coming weeks... I have an 83 720 4x4 pickup, and something tells me the transmission is coming out soon for some repair(think another bearing is losing it... ). I'm not ready to retire this truck anytime soon(321k miles, gutless, but running like a champ), BUT I will take measurements of everything and post them and compare to subaru. Honestly, even though the subaru tranny is good, theres just no point in having it with a divorced tcase. anyone know the shaft diameter and spline count on the subaru trannies? btw, I like fwd when it comes to handling... but when it comes to taking off and doin cookies, rwd is where its at
  12. huh? elaborate please... I dont quite understand what your talking about... if you want to run a hydrolic pump for other stuff why not just rig up a pulley and run it off of the drive belt, unless your car as no room at all for that cause it has ac, power steering, a fan and other stuff(not mine.. i only got waterpump and alternator on my belt...)
  13. yeah... well depending on how much you offroad your soob and how rough you get with it... as long as it has a purpose armor is GOOD, and will pay for itself. tail light guards, a sturdy bumper and gas tank skid, if you ever plan to bash into any rocks, tubing/bars going across the tailgate that are detatchable might be a good idea along with bars/expanded steel plate around the windows... but if you ever get that far it might just be better to remove all the paneling and everything and make a custom body and frame/subframes like that guy w/ the subaru hummer, shiet might as well just make your own damn car and everything and just use a subaru engine and drivetrain(what I'm dreaming to do next summer...)
  14. probably, but you'd have to make it work with a tail gate, and hopefully when you go bushwacking your not going rump roast end first... people do make bumpers and tire carriers for the rear and tail light guards and gas tank skids and winches and lights and all sorts of stuff which I guess falls under that category, but if your considering a brushgaurd for the rear like some brushgaurds are made for the front, I dont think that is very practical. but more armor is ALWAYS a good thing.
  15. aw man, my stuff wasnt in the faq and it got move here anyways, my original question about compatibility between ea81s from differant years and ea82s and such should go into the faq... about suspension/body lifting process
  16. yeah I meant still use the ea81... I love this engine lol, it wouldnt be a soob no more without a flat four.
  17. gimme one and I'll lift it
  18. alrighty.. heres what I got for the action pics... unfortunately she didnt get any of the ones where I was flingin snow over my roof but theres still some to drool over:
  19. oh yeah I already know.. I had a cheap cherokee, that was a mistake. are you sure junkyard axles are any good? especially in anything thats been sitting for quite a while, seems like most of them would be pretty bad even if I could get 10 junkyard axles for the price of 1 reman, least everyone after the first reman would be free. 33s and 12" is not possible for less than 1000 unless I can get all the parts and materials other than tires given to me virtually for free. i figure if I can get the major stuff taken care of first, the little smaller things I can peice together individually. first I need to make my lift and get tires and wheels out of the way, then get a tcase and diff if I choose, and then do rear disc conv, drill hubs, trimming, brake lines, shift linkages, so on and so forth... harder to get big chunks of money later down the road than smaller chunks of money, considering I get $10/hr and little work this time of year. anyways... am I allowed to hijack my own thread
  20. has anyone ever swapped in a non subaru transmission on an ea81? I'm thinking if I ever go divorced tcase I might just want to find a 5 spd transmission to go with the engine to elminate the dead weight from the front differantial, not to mention maybe reduce a little parisitic loss of power from turning those gears and stubs needlessly... just wondering if its been done and if its practical, and what transmissions have the same input shaft and maybe even bolt right up w/out an adapter plate(hey anything is possible...)
  21. cool thanks... me gonna go think for a while and search
  22. yeah... i know I do thats why I'm here. I'm not gonna do a bolt on kit I'm gonna go totally custom. ok so with a divorced tcase you have to have a differant front differantial, that answers a whole lot. I might just stick to 6" but 8" doesnt seem far away, and once I get there 10-12 doesnt seem far away but it adds up i guess. anyways my initial question was answered, thanks!
  23. me too, I found subarubrats site and some others, but after seeing that there really isnt much differance between 6" and 10"-12" I'm considering going all out if I can find the money and maybe someone with a warm place to work lol. I know after I go 6" I'm gonna wanna go bigger. I'm only gonna have around $1000 initially to work w/ tho for material and tires and rims and if I go 33s I think I'll wanna do a tcase conversion and some brake work... anyone got good info on how the tcase conversion works? I've seen a whole bunch on the forums of people that do it, but I dont quite understand it because isnt the front differantial on a soob inside of the transmission, and isnt the gear reduction in before the transmission or something? I'm curious as to how that works and so far bout that my searches have come up with jack. I know I could make 6" w/ 29s work for less than 1000, 12" w/ 33s might be a bit tough, I could probably come up with another $500-1000 for this project in a month if I tried hard enough. the killer is the 33" swampers, those things get expensive QUICKLY as you get bigger. oh yeah I'd have to get my half shafts with a warranty... I'd be going through them a couple every week .... I toasted one in the rear this weekend with the stock tire size when I was messing around, whenever i put it in 4wd I get this really loud "clang clang clang" coming from the right rear untill i get up to 30mph and am going absolutly straight.
  24. ok I've been reading a lot, and most of the good write ups I've come across were specifically labeled for 82-87 ea81 brats/wagons or ea82s I have an 1981 ea81 wagon and I'm doing a lot of research bout body lifts, I was originally thinking about going 6" my question is: what year/models have the same suspension/body when it comes to lifting, IE are all ea81s the same? what are the differances between ea81s and ea82s? are the body lifting processes the same? more questions to come as I come up with them... oh yeah I can probably find this by searching(which I will shortly), but if I wanted to go higher than 6", say 8-10", because it doesnt seem like there is much differance between 4" of body lift and 10" of body lift other than the length of the blocks, would I need any other serious modifications other than brake lines steering linkages etc...? who out there has WAGONS(not BRATS) that are lifted 8"-12" and have any sort of pictures? I have a hard time searching the photo gallery for some reason. thanks
