  1. my wagon was pushing 29.5" tires with the 200mm clutch before I pulled the motor. It will hold up for a while, the pressure plate failed before the clutch starting slipping too much. When I got it apart the clutch disk looks at about 60%, while the PP is almost completely flat. But I only had it running for about 6 months? you'd have to get used to replacing the clutch fairly often or just do some custom flywheel.

    6" lift

    this is the best I can find so far... cant measure because car is 2 hours away, but the tires are 29.5x10.50 but really measure about an inch larger than that. its 6" block lift, and this is before I cranked up the rear torsion bar.

I believe the 10 extra ft/lbs is probably due to the fact that flanged bolts typically are cut underneath in a way that keeps them from backing off and adds more resistance along with the extra surface area when you torque them on. I dont think that is necessary however, and they really dont have a lower profile than a conventional hexhead bolt with a washer. I dont know ea82s very well but I would recomend just replace the part and not have to worry about it rather than put it back together knowning it will fail later on.
  4. yeah if its not load bearing I'd just grind off as much of the rust as possible and por15 it like GD said, and then pop rivit some wire mesh down and glass it.
  5. well the flooding issue I'm assuming is only on startup, sounds like its a hard starting car and you're probably pumping the gass to much when you try to start it and end up flooding it... which would explain why you dont get ************ty mileage while driving, because you arent pumping the gas and wasting it.
  6. bit late for that... the next morning the wheels were frozen on both cars, sprayed some WD40 around the brake parts(brakes on the nissan are shot so dont worry about it), and then followed quickly by starter fluid on the subaru... we got the subaru out OK, but 2 wheels had been totally locked up pulling it out and took a while to get unfrozen. next time it stops raining/snowing,and it drys out and the ground freezes enough I've got some heavier equipment lined up to go in, friends old dodge weapons carrier, a log skidder, and a backhoe to serve as an extra anchor
  7. Yes, find a reputable locksmith and bring it to them. If it isnt salvagable, get a new one, and have it rekeyed so you can use your original key.
  8. I have a reciever on both the front and rear, the one in the front is STURDY.. it isnt part of the bumper its tied into the frame REALLY good. What size cable and how long? there is a sturdy tree about I dunno, 200yds away.
  9. everything on the surface is frozen now, I just chose the WRONG time to do that because of the massive amount of rain we had earlier... high lift MAY work, BUT I dont have one, and with that much force it will probably push right through the top 4-8" of frozen mud to where there is still slop. I will DEFINATE try a highlift if I can get one though,even though I dont think it will work... the digging idea is all but impossible unless I can get the backhoe running, because the ground is FROZEN SOLID, and anything that hadnt soaked up water from the rain earlier, the dry ground, is ROCK HARD.... so maybe some kind of tracked forklift?
  10. thats the subaru to have. I wish I could do bodywork like that. Everything I do will be good, but it will be a lot rougher, less smooth and probably use a bit of metal... But for offroad purposes, it needs a bit more weight in the rear, it isnt supposed to look nice, and it may be tougher... You better build that now that you photoshopped that
  11. ok, i need to get that nissan out... and i'm not quite sure how I can do it. the guy I know with the log skidders I cant get ahold of, and the only other thing I have at hand that would make a great anchor for a vehicle with a winch, our back hoe, does not run right now. anyone got ideas and willing to help?
  12. they were sturdy, at least the rear bumper was, practically broke my neck yanking on that thing. I think its time to get a winch. I dont have a drill press so I reused the stock bumper mounts. On the front my welds had torn, I did that bumper before I was any good at welding thin metal with stick so it was pretty icky... the rear my welds were very very solid, the stock mount itself failed and had nothing to do with my work.
  13. +1 I would be nice to get some extra power out of a rebuild, but having done a proper rebuild yet, better to just stick to the basics. It wont be too good to sink a lot of money into a motor and end up just blowing it up. Maybe even just start by tearing it down, and putting it backtogether with the same parts and gaskets and seal... its typically the worst idea to reuse seals and gaskets when you rebuild an engine; however you would be tearing it down and putting it back together with the intent of properly rebuilding it after you got the teardown and assembly process down. I really dont have much experiance rebuilding these motors either, I've got one torn apart and ready to go back together in about a week, and another sitting on the bench I'm working on cleaning a lot of gunk off of before I tear it down. It seems there is quite a lot of science as far as performance goes for these motors and it would help to do a considerable amount of research before attempting a build up.

  15. well no pics of when I got stuck, but I got stuck pretty darn good for a stock subaru. Tried using my nissan to pull the subaru out, gave up after 45 minutes, 2 bumpers, broken tow hook on the nissan, and dug it in the last time trying to get the subaru out... got out of that mess intially but we gave up and were gonna head back to portland, got into the nissan, moved about 25 feet and oops, should have watched where I was going, cause it sunk into the ruts originally made by my subaru. Heres the pics of the morning after: Oh yeah, guy came saved us in an old international 1300(I think?), pretty big truck witha pto winch. It pulled the subaru out just fine, but broke the cable 3 times trying to get the nissan out(it didnt move an inch), and then broke another towhook yanking on it with a chain. Going up next weekend to see what I can do, anyone want to tag along? May or may not have a log skidder available.
  16. takes hardly any juice to turn a subaru motor over compared to most other cars, so you can drain the battery and still start. Usually when I need a lot of lights, I dont have my stereo blasting or a whole lot of other electronics, and I've run 5 55w lights and 1 100w spotlight along with my normal headlamps(and brights), and when I need that many lights pointing down the road, I'm usually going at good speed. Essentially, I've never had a problem with my alternator. if you want though you can upgrade to a 100amp gm alternator, and the older hitatchi nissan truck alternators bolt right in, although they are only 60-70amps. Also theres a few others but I cant think of them off the top of my head. The key to making an alternator work for you, and not have any excessive strain, is only use the electronics you need, only when you need them; versus crawling at less than 5mph but have your driving lights on that you use to see 500+ft down the road with.

If thats not the right page let me know, rancho changed their site around since the last time I was there, and adobe acrobat or whatever it is I use to view pdfs isnt working right now. It should be fairly large chart, with differant mounting styles at the top/front of it all and the codes associated with them, followed by the charts with differant shocks saying length travel compression etc...
  18. er sorry for the semi hijack... anyways yeah I think you're tranny is fine, seems every car I've messed with the tranny has always had similar on the drain plug, with perfectly healthy transmissions.
  19. yeah, my camera is broken and I was greasy and didnt feel like pulling out my phone, but yeah 2nd gear is pretty much blown in this transmission, can use it on the street if I hold it but the littlest thing and it pops out. impossible off road or for any serious driving in 4wd :-( wouldnt be so bad if there wasnt so much slop in the bearings n stuff. It binds up in reverse pretty bad and its starting to slowly bind up a little bit in forward gears, I'd say this transmission wont be able to move the car in 5k-10k miles or so.
  20. ok heres my belief as far as male vs female cars goes: Female cars break down at the littlest thing, usually have a down time of at least a week for every month, of which you usually have the worst headaches with the car. Cheep Cherokees make a great example. High maintenance. Male cars may have problems too, except they usually can just tough it out and keep going without it, can stand up to extreme abuse and still get you where you need to go. I dont think I need to say more, low maintenance.
  21. yeah. the amount of crap on mine(84 4spd d/r) was way more than that, and had chunks of bearing, synchro and gear cog bits. I think that may have something to do with why 2nd gear hardly works anymore

  23. if you can help me out with a little bit with a bus ticket, or preferably train ticket, I'd love to come up for a weekend if you have a place I can pitch a tent or set up a a cot or something.
  24. well unfortunately I cant drive legally for 6 months and its got me really bummed out because by the end of this winter I should have 3 running subarus and I've hardly driven a subaru in the snow since I got them :-(. Snow is why I initially got a subaru, and then I found out how great a car they were outside of that, which is why I now own 3: my lifted wagon on swampers, my stockish wagon for DD and really "fun" driving/exploring/camping/etc, and the 2wd hatch I plan on restoring and building up(read street not offroad). Anyways, I'm trying to get out in the snow around here, or at least mud if theres no snow. Some days I may be able to get a friend to drive my stock wagon, otherdays I would love to go along for the ride. So if anyone is planning anything I would love to get in on it.
