putting a carb. engine in front of auto. trans.
mikeshoup replied to abcus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If its a 4 spd, it is impossible. The carb does not have a throttle position sensor which the 4spd requires. If its a 3 spd, then no problem at all. -
You must've been using your air conditioning...

So, I'm making a road trip to Orlando, FL from here in beautiful Golden, CO. Leaving the 22nd at 10PM, hoping to arrive sometime around 6AM on the 24th. Not sure what car we're going to be taking, but especially if its my Turbo Wagon, can I get some PMs with numbers from people we'll be passing by? Would hate to be half way between home and Orlando and have a car break down with no help. Here's the tentative route: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=golden,+CO+to+8001+International+Dr,+Orlando,+FL&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=46.495626,82.265625&ie=UTF8&z=5&om=1 Sorry guys, not gonna have any time to meet any of you as we pass by, I'd love to, but the band nerds I'm riding with aren't into my Subarus as much as I am Also, anyone got any good short sights to see on the way? I'm wanna take any chance I get to take a break (I'll be driving most of the way... alas)

Go get a rotor for a 1991 Loyale. That's the only way to be sure the parts counter won't screw it up.
-
Have you replaced: Thermostat Radiator Cap Hoses If all of those are replaced, and the water pump was installed correctly and isn't prematurely failing, then something is wrong with the engine.
-
The XT6 also doesn't have a fuel range button. Thus, why the trip computer works. FYI: The trip computer will work without a digidash, you just don't get the fuel range function. (I'm thinking XT here, I've never actually seen a non-XT trip computer, and I can't imagine where the screen is)

The only difference between the two units is the resistance values. What you're talking about has to do with how the two dashes "read" the resistance values. As was said, the analog dash 'works' with the digi dash's sender, it just doesn't read on the dash correctly.

CTS Question on my Hated XT6
mikeshoup replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey, you can get a set of plug wires here: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php?carcode=1270831&parttype=7228 The same website sells a CTS for the car. You could probably get 'em overnighted or two day'd in time for the dragon. I've ordered from rockauto numerous times. Good site. -
She's got a new battery in it. Thanks for the offer though. A couple things to note about why your car isn't running after you've put a fresh engine it: That 7 year old battery probably won't have any charge left in it if its been sitting for a 7 months. If you get the fuel lines on backwards, fuel won't come out of the injector. The firing order is 1-3-2-4, but that's in a counter clockwise direction on the disty, not clockwise direction. The brake booster hose will create a large vacuum leak. Ask me how I know all this.

Yeah, a garden hose will not unclog a radiator very easily. Have you pulled it out and checked the fins on it? Especially on the front since those can't be seen easily. I haven't owned one EA82 Subaru that didn't need the radiator replaced. Every one that still has the original radiator had terrible fin rot.

Looking for EA Info
mikeshoup replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Am I so nerdy, that I'm the only one who sits down and reads the owners manual to every car he purchases? I loved reading the 86 XT one. So many cool gadgets to learn about If everyone read their owner's manual, we wouldn't have the posts wondering about the parking lights still on, or why does the 4WD make the car hop around corners on dry pavement. -

First off, there's no need for swearing here. Your DL gets everyone's respect, just as much as my GL would, or someone else's Subaru. We're all good guys. As far as quirks, there's too many too list. Check your owner's manual next time for the proper fluid to use, as well as for everything else. Never assume anything. If you need to know everything there is about your car, get a set of factory service manuals (FSMs for short). IE: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1988-SUBARU-SERVICE-MANUALS-SECTION-1-2-3-4-5-and-6_W0QQitemZ250142845880QQihZ015QQcategoryZ119140QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem -
The only guy with a DL Wagon (oil leak)
mikeshoup replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You're probably fine. Most power steering fluid is very close to ATF anyways. If you're real paranoid about it, flush it out with ATF. Pull off the return line, and shove it into a jar. Plug the whole in the reservoir, then start the car. Keep filling the reservoir until nothing but cherry red comes out of the return line. -

You have a second cat, not a resonator. -

There are some models with two cats. Some have a resonator. Some have nothing at all. Depends on the model and what emissions standard its made for (CA or no). My 89 coupe has two cats, my 88 wagon had two cats, my 84 turbo wagon has one. The front is a three way, the rear cat is a two way. Keep the front (the y-pipe), lose the rear. FYI: In 88 all models (except maybe justy) had two cats. -
Badly blown head gasket. Its sucking that crap through the PCV system. I'll bet you'll drain out 1.5 gallons of oil/water mix.

Should I grease the front wheel Bearings

Then next time wait longer than two hours. -
A clogged radiator isn't the only sign of a bad radiator. The fins on it can also rot off. Even here in CO it happens. My 88 GL had entire rows of fins missing... that thing overheated badly. My new 89 coupe has a case of fin rot too. Thinking I'm gonna have to replace its radiator soon.

It stopped burning whatever it was burning. No coolant lost, so, must've just had crap in it She drives good. Now I need a battery.
-
She runs.... sort of. Kinda burning a little coolant. Gonna have to figure that one out. Perhaps I didn't seal the intake as carefully as I should have.

What heads on an EA82 non-turbo?
mikeshoup replied to RMVR53's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
RMVR: What dealer did you go through? Go Subaru West wanted a ridiculous amount for a head set last time I checked into it...
