  1. EA81 Hatchback looks like: EA82 Coupe looks like: Its confusing cuz they were both made concurrently until 1989.
  2. I need a new D/S door for my coupe. Found a coupe of the same color at a junkyard. My coupe has power windows, junkyard coupe has crank windows. How hard is it to swap the innerds over to retain the power windows? If its much of a PITA, I'll just wait until I find one with power windows.
  3. That's called the piston. You need a clamp of some sorts to squeeze the piston back into the caliper. (I also crack open the master cylinder to relieve the pressure as you do it) I use a large wood clamp for this. You could also use a C-Clamp, though I would stick a piece of wood between the two so that pressure is applied evenly. On the Subaru, the piston has to be turned in as pressure is being applied. There's too little notches in the piston. Auto parts stores sell a little cube thingy that you attach to a ratchet that works okay for this.
  4. For the price of aftermarket clutch kits, I would go with the Subaru ones that were posted in a link above. My coupe had a Subaru OEM clutch installed 15K before I bought it. Better feeling clutch than any of the aftermarket ones I've driven.
  5. I just have a generic punch (5/16" I believe). It works great.
  6. Parts list: -Manual tranny (duh) -manual pedal assemble -clutch cable -speedo cable (the manual ones is longer than the autos) -flywheel -8 bolts that hold the flywheel to the engine (they are longer than the ones used to hold the flexplate to the engine) -clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, pilot bearing -manual tranny crossmember along with tranny mounts -rubber mount that secures to the tranny tunnel behind the shifter. There. Basically everything that's in hatchsub's write up, minus the radius rod plates.
  7. One of the CO guys, Rick, put an XT EA82 motor in his Gen 2 wagon. It fit fine. I think that's a myth. It was a tight fit though. I'm with the rest of the guys though. Swap the SPFI onto the EA81 and and put the 5spd D/R. FYI: You know that the FWD to 4WD conversion is a huge PITA, and you'd need a gas tank to, right?
  8. Yes. The EA81 grounds through the radiator As such, you have to make sure the ground wire is attached to it.
  9. My EA82 Wagon SPFI 4WD D/R got 28mpg on average.
  10. He gave you a carb'd model stuff. I'm assuming since its an 88, you have SPFI, nonTurbo? Go to the parts counter and order parts for a 92 Loyale. That usually skips all the confusion. The Loyale will have the same parts, just doesn't have the confusion of another car by the same name made at the same time.
  11. I ran my old SPFI setup at around 27 degrees. No trouble at all on 85 octane. (bear in mind, I do live at a mile high) This was including numerous trips into the mountains at pretty high elevations (drove to the base of a 14er at ~11,000 feet).
  12. Yup, my old XT Turbo w/ Digi Dash beeped at 6K. Was kinda cool.
  13. Catch can is required. Mine would shoot oil out of the breathers, or into the intake depending on how I had it setup.
  14. Or a GL Turbo wagon with the quad light swap.
  15. They have an Our world is flat sticker and shirt... I thought this was an original USMB design?
  16. PM one of the admins, and they should be able to change it for you.
  17. You could, but the suspicion is the tranny cooler doesn't flow well enough for engine oil. Besides, with an EA81T, why would you want to? These already have an oil cooler on them. (The EA82T on the other hand does not)
  18. Don't need to in order to remove an axle. Just unbolt the control arm at the inboard side and unbolt the swaybar. Then I always do this with the tire on, but I put my foot at the bottom of the tire (while I'm laying under the car) and push the bottom of it out and the axle pops off the transmission. Then just push it out of the hub, voila!
  19. Of course, never mind that in 88, the transmission tunnel was redesigned to accommodate the shear size of the 4EAT... but yeah, that discussion is moot.
  20. That's the first thing I remove on a Subaru when I buy it, that damn little silencer.
  21. If you were near Colorado, hell you could have my old 3AT for free. I've still got the damn thing sitting in the backyard. Needs to go away. They really are crap, but if you want an Automatic, guess you're stuck with one as a 4EAT swap would be a huge PITA.
  22. Can you show me pictures of the spot welds on the body? I swore I didn't see anything like this in the junkyard donor.
  23. I put a 4spd D/R into my Turbo Wagon. Was pretty straight forward. Simple bolt in once you have all the parts. There are two modifications you have to make: Cut the hole in the tranny tunnel larger. I used a dremel and went through two cutting discs, but it did it just fine. You also have to mount the shifter lever to the tunnel some how. Problem you'll find is the flat spot that the manual 4wd cars isn't there on the tunnel in an automatic, so some creativity will have to be had there. Overall, a simple swap. A 5spd isn't much more complicated. You'll need a modified crossmember. Bratsrus1 (jerry) can do it for you. You'll also need to modify the 4wd shifter (again, Jerry can). From there, you'll have to find a way to either: mount the two piece driveshaft, or shorten your one piece (or was it lengthen?). As far as the EA81T, its a great motor. Can take a beating, and mine has yet to overheat. These aren't like the EA82Ts that have issues. Still though, don't let it overheat, otherwise you'll be kissing the headgaskets good bye. Its not all that powerful (95hp stock), but its got plenty to scoot my wagon along.
  24. So, my brother killed the engine in his 3 door. Tired of it, he went and bought a Saturn. Gave him a couple months, he couldn't get rid of the 3 door, so he gave it to me. I've got an engine almost ready to drop into it. Its got a bit of rust. Specifically, look at the side of the door: Other side looks fine though: Original engine lasted 215K+ (there was a period of about 1 year with a broken speedo cable...) Hoping the engine I put in will last quite long. Maybe I can get this thing into 300K.
