Getting better gas mileage
mikeshoup replied to Tom63050's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Its true, if the transmission is in neutral. If the transmission is in gear, the engine is kept up to speed by the momentum of your car. In the 83-84 Turbo manual, it says when the throttle is closed, and engine above a certain speed, no fuel is injected. This makes sense. If they were doing it in 83-84, I can assume they continued to do this in later years. I can scan the relevant pages in the FSM if you don't believe me. -
Getting better gas mileage

I agree... to an extent. My T-Wag back when it still had the 3AT, switching from 175/70/13 tires that were on it to the 185/80/13 that are on it now actually helped. Went from around 18mpg to 22mpg. I needed the gearing at highway speeds more than anything with the 3AT. Now that I have the 4spd though, it may be different. -

The fuel injected cars shutoff fuel with the throttle closed and engine above a certain speed, or at least really leans it out. This can be verified with an A/F meter. It will drop completely off with the throttle closed. I'd debate the negligibility of shutting ignition off while coasting. Motor off at stop lights, see nothing wrong with that if its a long stop light. +1 on 185/80/13 tires. That's what my T-Wag runs and it helped a lot. -
What is this and do I need it????
mikeshoup replied to pinksock's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's exactly what it is. Provides vacuum to the flappers for the HVAC system. Hook it up to a manifold vacuum source on the EJ22. -
Me am only 21 years old.

EA82T 4 plug computer ID ?
mikeshoup replied to discopotato03's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
In 87.5 we did get a Spider Turbo XT. There's a specific 87 FSM for it too. But that's it. The ECUs should actually be interchangeable, but they still may not be. You'll have to find an FSM to compare the two and figure out what you got. Or check the dealership and see if they can look it up. Unfortunately here in the US, it'll be hard for us to help you since spider XT Turbos are so rare. -
Sure they're not your muffler bearings?

Worth Buying another Loyale
mikeshoup replied to I)arkZrobe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You're in Colorado, and you're worrying about parts? Hah. You make me laugh. Parts are easy to find in Colorado, just gotta know where to look (for you, that's probably trips up to Denver periodically) Legacy was the first Subaru to have an Airbag. An 88 will NOT have an airbag. It could have air suspension though, which has four airbags to elevate the car. Is this the case? If so, as long as its in working order your fine. Second it breaks, convert it over to regular struts. -
Oil pressure drops with RPM EA82
mikeshoup replied to jsupafly's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's very typical. The sensor just doesn't have enough resolution to accurately gauge what your oil pressure is. The owner's manual even says its normal to read 0 at warm idle. If you're worried about oil pressure, get a mechanical gauge. -
Check out this GL STI i spotted!

I still wouldn't like a 3 door painted like that. EA82s are supposed to look like EA82s. Part of what makes these cars special in my mind is that they are unique, to this day. Making one of these cars look like its one of the modern WRC winning cars is just wrong. Also, unless he has power and handling to back up those looks, its just plain rice. (Not that its wrong at all) Its just not what I'd do. I know there's plenty of people who see things differently, and that's cool too. -
Are you using the correct Turbo ECU? Make sure you've got the correct one for the type of system you have, Flapper or Hotwire. Otherwise, I'd say its a bad ECU.

Yeah... I'm sorry, but they ruined that poor sedan. -
Buying another ea81... 3AT question
mikeshoup replied to 86BRATMAN's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sounds like the governor to me. My Turbo's 3AT would also do that, but only when it was cold. My solution was to ditch it for a 4spd. Wouldn't be shifter slop. A) It doesn't sound anything at all like the problem and The shifter is attached via a rod, and shouldn't get any slop in it unless you've messed with the adjustment nuts. -
Rattling Maybe Knocking Sound?
mikeshoup replied to mikeshoup's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Found the source: All but one of the flywheel bolts were loose. I originally tightened 'em all down to specs on torque. My torque must not be all that accurate This time, I'm gonna use loc-tite on them. -
That's my attitude right there! Once I get the parts, I'll try this out! FYI: Parts catalogs show the EA82 rotors are about 1/2 inch larger than the EA81 rotors. Should be good for some more braking powar!

The analog gauge runs off of the one labeled Boost Sensor. Its a variable electric sender. The digital gauge uses the pressure switch. Since the EA81T analog dash has a gauge and not a light, the pressure switch isn't used for the dash at all on the analog.

more xt6 clutch questions
mikeshoup replied to mellow65's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The clutch kits are technically interchangeable, so its no surprise that they have the same part number. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php?carcode=1270831&parttype=1993 Try those. -
So, I think I figured out what killed the 214k engine in my brother's 3 door coupe. I did a compression test on it, 3 out of 4 cylinders were extremely low, and the fourth was pretty low.

Rattling Maybe Knocking Sound?
mikeshoup replied to mikeshoup's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It can't be anything to do with the timing belt tensioners. (I have no timing belts ) My thought is something in the bell housing may have rattled loose. Like a flywheel bolt, or p-plate bolt. I don't remember anything about an inspection plate, though I'll look and see if that could be it too. Turbo seems unlikely to me, because the noise matches the engine speed. There isn't any lag at all (which I think there would be?). I'm off to Illinois for a week, so I'll tinker with it when I get back. -
Correct. You have to be running rims that will clear on EA82s. Luckily, that's all I have (my EA81 rims are bent)
-
I know this from deduction. EA82 wagon wheels have sharper curves on the edge of the spokes so they can clear the calipers.
-
What's the chance of fitting EA82 front brakes on an EA81? I would think changing the knuckle and then using all the brake stuff from the EA82 would work. Is the strut mount different? If so, then the EA82 strut with EA81 top mounts? And just how much bigger is the EA82 discs than the EA81 discs? I know they're bigger, but just how much?

Rattling Maybe Knocking Sound?
mikeshoup replied to mikeshoup's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I removed the drivebelts, thus why I ruled out the accessories (I should have been a little more clear on that) Clutch action works fine. The noise is pretty loud, so I'm having trouble localizing it. -
