Looking at the pictures, it seems to be more just like someone left the shutter wide open and moved around a light source. Light painting I think its called. I like playing with that stuff. Did a couple years ago in a photo class I took. Can't find any examples of what I did.

Looking for parts from 3AT
mikeshoup replied to L1800Turbo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just an FYI, to make things easier, looks like the part you need is called the governor gear. Very common for those to fail on the 3AT. There's gotta be plenty of us on this side of the pond that can find you a good one. P.S., I just pulled the part up on a dealership website, and its $375 for a new one. Doubt you wanna spend that. Hopefully someone has a good used one. -
That's his Justy motor. Thanks for playing!

90 subaruy loyale 1.8 help!
mikeshoup replied to freesubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What he said ^^ Bring your multimeter with you, find one with a good resistance value, 35 ohms. That's what I do. -
Cuz your Loyale is from the past. Think of it as an 80s car having been born in the 90s. EJ stuff is all considered new gen, despite sharing the same years as some EA stuff.
-
My EJ25 swapped RX started doing this weird thing where it will start and run for like three seconds, then it just dies. Cranking it again starts, then it will run for ever. You'd be cranky too if you were being told to start at 3F.

This may be a dumb wheel fitment question, but..
mikeshoup replied to FJason80's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
No. An 88 GL uses a 4x140mm bolt pattern. -
EA81 turbo conversion using EA82T
mikeshoup replied to backinbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
EA82 MPFI / Turbo stuff is not going to be a bolt on. The ports on the EA82 MPFI stuff look like mickey mouse. Those intake ports are way too spread out to "bolt on" anything from an EA82. Anything you put on that will have to be custom. -- On a standard EA81, the only thing that is bolt on is the EA82 SPFI/Carb manifolds. -
EA81 turbo conversion using EA82T
mikeshoup replied to backinbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You would need a custom intake manifold. Looking at pictures from the dual port heads RAM offers, its completely different from any stock EA manifold. -

This Is Probably a Dumb Question
mikeshoup replied to Subarule's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes. I owned one. POS. Replaced with a manual. -
Pardon the messy hair. This was on top of a 14er called Quandary peak. Needless to say, at 14,271 feet, there's quite a bit of wind.

Deleting engine driven radiator fan
mikeshoup replied to rpiereck's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've always just removed the damn mechanical fan. Then proceeded to wire up the electric fan to a switch. Never had any overheating problems (that were due to the fan). -
I thought FWD EA81 axles and 4WD EA81 axles had different shaft spline counts and the FWD ones hooked right up to the EA82T DOJ? I know when I was looking at this, General Disorder gave me some clues as to what to get. I know this has been done before.

XT steering wheel in an RX
mikeshoup replied to mikeshoup's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Not yet. Rumor has it though, there's a couple XTs at a local Junkyard... I'm definitely going to try then. The standard steering wheel is just... boring -
Anybody know if an XT steering wheel hook right up to an RX? Are the splines the same? Just tossing the idea around...

This is probably a stupid question but...
mikeshoup replied to offroadsubie1's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Clarify, are you talking about accessory belts, or timing belts? -
just bought an XT6.....added pics!
mikeshoup replied to Numbchux's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You honestly do not notice a difference when driving. Plus, the asymetricalness of it makes it freaking awesome! -
'86 Subaru Standard questions
mikeshoup replied to YellowSub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Tell them its like an 84 DL... as long as it has an EA71/1.6L listing, you'll be fine. -
Start the car, if the CEL is on, no need to hook up any connectors. Look down and read the codes. If the CEL is off when running, hook up the white connectors. This is to read past codes. Green connectors are the test connectors. Refer to an FSM for the full test procedure.

Oh please GD, don't pull the "Look at ma post count" b.s. I say if you're just going to drive the vehicle to and fro' the store a few times a week, just get whatever. Carb, SPFI, etc, should all work fine. Performance isn't going to be an issue. Plus, if your car won't start, just bum a ride from Jeffast (he's up in Laramie now at wyotech).

Way to post this in both forums... P.S. A little searching will do good. And yes, it will fit.

Timing belts are not lined up to 0 TDC. Rotate the flywheel, some distance to the left of the TDC marks are three little marks. They may be tough to see, grab a flashlight and some white out for when you do find them. You line it up to the middle of the three marks. Once you line that up, driver's side cam gets lined up with the notch in the timing cover (or if you remove the covers like me, the seam for the valve cover). Rotate the engine 360 degrees, lining up again to the center of the three marks. Line up the passenger's side cam with the notch in the timing cover. Driver's side should point down now. Rotate the engine a couple times to double check everything is lined up. EDIT: http://www.economysuperstar.com/milesfox/gallery/rxbuild/cranktiming.jpg Take a look at that. That came from miles fox's websites. That's what you line up to.
