EA81 solid lifter into my '87 EA82 coupe
mikeshoup replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
The EA81T uses an EA82 Power Steering setup. The brackets look mighty similar too. I also know that theres a red EA81T Wagon in Pull N' Save (was still there last weekend...). Maybe rob its brackets, crank pulley, and water pump pulley as ALL of those are different. That should let you bolt the EA82 power steering. If not, you may have to compare the EA82 racks with the EA81 racks, and see if you can use the EA81 pump and hoses. -
Show off your roos Mileage!

My brother's GL just died. The 249,926 is the final number on the ticker. Compression is low all the way around, and number 4 is down to 35PSI. Not sure what killed it, just that its dead. The rust on it is too much to justify putting anymore into the car. It will see the junkyard probably in a few days (after I rob the 3.9 rear diff from it). A sad Saturday it was when we finally started checking it out. -
Is there any more details about it? And what's VRi?

Curious, what ever happened with the Quattro-San hatchback? Those are some sweet articles!

There's like three turbos that go on the motor. All of them the same, except some are missing the water cooling bits. I've seen VF2, VF4 and VF7. However, note, only the Subaru turbos will bolt up, as the other brands that use them (Ford/Mazda...) use different flanges.

My car must love the taste of coolant
mikeshoup replied to Prospeeder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Stop leak is bad stuff... My buddy tried it in his Ford Taurus (I know, not a Subaru) because of a leak in the radiator. It clogged up the radiator and the heater core, and the radiator still leaked from that spot! So not only did he have to replace the radiator, but the heater core as well. If you have a head gasket leak, its not going to seal it up. If you have a cracked head, its not going to seal it up. It will seal up your heater core, and possibly your radiator. If you are going to sell it, offer it up to someone who will take care of it. If you were in the area, I'd take it off your hands to keep you from doing any more damage to it. BTW, you buy a 20 yr old car, you have to expect not to get what you put into it back. I managed to pull it off with one car (my silver wagon), but another car I lost big on (my XT). It is just how it goes. -
Okay, I need a third eye now Or, wouldn't it be a 5th eye on a quad headlight car?

I'll take free Blue Moon any day. Killian's and Blue Moon are just about the only Coors beer I'll drink. Molson isn't that bad either. Plus, you can get Zima if you so desire (we reserve that right for the chicks in our group usually). Best thing about going to CSM here in Golden, is the Coors brewery "Short Tour"s. Walk up to the tour desk, say, "Short Tour!". They swipe your ID, print off a wrist band, and send you off your way. You can walk right to the bar, and get three free 10oz beers of most anything Coors makes/sells.

Its Mike Shoup (no 'e') Personally, I think my avatar might be too scary for children's eyes. Yours may have said New User, better than Ignorant (self-proclaimed) -
What to do with old FSMs.
mikeshoup replied to mikeshoup's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
All done! Note: Chapter 9 IS missing a page. That page is long lost. Only thing not scanned in are the large wiring diagrams at the end of the book. Haven't found a suitable method to scan those in. -

I've got more chapters up. With any luck, I'll be finished tonight. EDIT: Have all but the large Chapter 15... I'll get that scanned a little later. -

I got an axle off eBay for $30 Hasn't blown up on me... yet -
Most auto parts chains should be able to get you the right distributor cap. My 1986 XT Turbo has the same cap, and I didn't have trouble getting one. Most will have to order it from their warehouse, as they're usually not stocked. Try for an 85 RX Turbo. Should get you the right one, as RXs were only available in Turbo. I got mine a Checker ftl btw.

I would join you, but I'll be outta town. Still got a few small parts to pick up for my 4spd swap. -
Maybe I missed it, do I need the manual tranny crossmember? I've got just about everything, minus differential, radius rod plates, and the crossmember (?).

Negative side of the coil. This is a really simple wiring job.

My Soob died- Have some questions about towing
mikeshoup replied to 211's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The problem is that the automatics should not be towed without the engine running, unless the front wheels are off the ground and the driveshaft disconnected. Damage to the transfer clutch will ensue quickly without the engine to pump the oil and keep it lubricated. This is different from a manual transmission. Safest bet with an automatic, disconnect the rear driveshaft, or put it on a flat bed. -
Wish I would've seen this thread earlier. Math is my strong suit. I could've done the geometry for you :-p

All EA81 radiators are dual core. I would definitely recommend getting a brand new one especially since you live in the desert. As for what models fit, any EA81 bodied car.

mikeshoup replied to ivantruckman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I don't think I've ever seen a tire with the outside diameter marked on the sidewall. The LT tires are marked with the tread width in inches. Not the diameter.
