  1. Its referred to by both. In offroading, people often care more about the tire diameter than the actual tire width and sidewall aspect. In non-offroading contexts, you usually see the tire size: 185/70/13 In offroading contexts, you usually see the diameter: 23.2"
  2. Then could one tow with the rear wheels off the ground and the fronts on the ground? (I dunno if that'd even be safe?)
  3. When people say they run 29s, that means the tire's outside diameter is 29 inches. Stock tires, btw, are roughly 23 inches. By running 29 inch tires, you actually gain ~ 3 inches in ground clearance (half of the difference in diameter, or, the difference in radii)
  4. Manual transfer case? All PT4WD Automatic are pushbutton 4WD, and the rear transfer clutch is activated electronically. I believe with the automagics, you need to disconnect the driveshaft to prevent damage to the transfer clutch. Just unbolt it from the rear diff, then tie up somehow. Or remove the rear section by unbolting it from the diff and the from the front section. Removing the whole driveshaft will cause the fluid to run out. So if you do that, just fill it back up when you get home.
  5. Put 4WD shifter in 2WD and tow with the front wheels off the ground. No need to remove the driveshaft as long as its a part time 4wd manual.
  6. The oil pressure sender (or low pressure switch as you probably have) is on the oil pump. Its an electrical thing. Look down at the oil pump and you should see a wire running to a little sensor screwed into it. That's the pressure switch.
  7. That's cuz he edited his post, and added the video later Yup, just check those timing belts. I'll bet you three nickels that's what it is.
  8. My guess is a turbo ER27 would be as reliable as an EA82T. (which isn't saying much...) Worse if you stick if you stick with the 9.5:1 pistons. The ER27 is basically an EA82 with two cylinders added onto it. They make 145HP stock.
  9. That's why if its a DD, don't weld the rear diff. Or if you do, pull a rear axle until you take it offroading. Just get an LSD. There's an article in the USRM for converting the turbo 3.7LSD to a 3.9LSD.
  10. Probably because the majority of the after market for the EA81 is for aircraft use. Why use an EA71 when the EA81s are more common and make more power. Places like ram performance could probably get you performance parts for EA71s.
  11. eBay is where I find mine mostly, and a couple from family members who owned an old Subaru back in the day. SoA still has some of them in stock. Just need to find the part numbers.
  12. Only thing that will bolt up to your stock tranny is another EA-71 (the 1.6 pushrod motor) or some earlier motors which you probably wouldn't want. If you want a power upgrade, you could get an EA-81 5spd 2WD trans and an EA-81 motor (1.8L Pushrod). You *could* get an EA-82 motor instead (1.8 SOHC), however the thing is wide and is tough to fit between the frame rails. Some people it fits just fine, some people it hits the frame rails. From there, for more power, you could go EJ, etc...
  13. He said his alternator was wearing out. He just needs to put a good alternator on.
  14. Anyone remember the route we took? I don't remember any of the road names except for Golden Gate Canyon...
  15. Definitely off of the negative side of the coil. Definitely, most definitely.
  16. Did you use the right wires off the coil for the tach sensor? Our coils *should* produce ~1V square wave for the tachometer, as that's what it expects. I believe this is with respect to the negative side of the coil and ground...
  17. Was a blast. Have to do something like it again. I have a few pictures that I'll get to uploading later. Not a whole lot though. I may pick on Jeff a lot, but we're still friends:
  18. 1: Maybe? The axles themselves are longer, but I think the FWD EA81 shafts are the same diameter as the EA82 4WD ones... 2: Metric sockets and wrenches, 10mm ratcheting wrench (to remove the valve covers easily), torque wrench, breaker bar. 3: Everything to do the head gaskets minus the torque wrench (though its handy). You have to take the timing belts off anyways to do head gaskets.
  19. I think I win the shortest distance award Btw, the 7-11 Shawn is referring to is at CO-93 and Washington Ave.
  20. I honestly don't think that the bumper is all that bad. Its just a plastic cover anyways. Its at least better than most of the modern bumpers.
  21. Compare the wattage of the bulbs. If they're the same, you're A-O-K.
  22. I ended up writing a perl script to order the pages. I'm up to Chapter 6. I'm gonna work on it more tomorrow. http://mshoup.us/docs/fsm/EA81/83/
  23. Don't worry, I've got that covered. My coworker has an 82 FSM held together by duct tape. He wants it scanned in too
