help, major catastrophy *updated with pics*

Bah, a little bit of JB weld and it'll be as good as new -
Suggested Spark Plugs, Oil and filters
mikeshoup replied to nathan.chase's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Dunno who told you Fram filters were good. They really are the worst built filters out on the market. (Note: Penzoil filters are just yellow Frams) I usually pick up Bosch filters for like $3.50. Made by Champion, and the only filter the local auto parts store sells besides Fram. -
you guys like tricked out brats? (pics)
mikeshoup replied to HATCHY's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That BRAT's been posted before. I admire the guys amount of work in it, but I think it looks fugly. I don't know what's more annoying though, the ad for "Free Huggable Smilies" at the bottom of your post, or the BRAT. (Sorry to be an, rump roast) -
I added a clutch fan and look what it does!
mikeshoup replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Those clutch fans sound silly. Almost like the garbage truck taking off from your sidewalk. If you need the added cooling, I guess its worth it. -
The EA82T never came stock with that 5spd D/R in the config you said. It came with those gear ratios, but a final drive of 3.7, with a 1.196 low range. As well, none of the turbo trannies had final drives of 3.416. They were all 3.7 low range. The S/R PT4WD transmission had the same ratios as the dual range (minus the low range). In 85-86, it was the same as the 5 speed D/R in the GL, in 87+ I believe it was the same as the RX D/R.
-
Not necessarily. I pulled an LSD from a turbo 3 door with a part time 4wd. They're fairly rare in PT4WDs, but were listed as an option.

Where have people mounted CD changers in their EA81 Wagons? I was thinking under the rear seat, but I don't think there's enough space. I was also thinking on the floor in the rear, but I'm not sure where the fuel tank starts and ends... Don't want to drill into the fuel tank accidentally

Actually, Chevron sells a high mileage oil that comes in a gold bottle. Personally, I'm with you, I usually buy just cheap cases of Chevron. I pick it up at Sam's Club on the cheap.

EA81 Block is exactly like the EA81T block. Difference is like Caboob stated, the heads have injector bosses. Plus there's a bracket at the front of the motor above the crank pulley used for timing, and there's no timing indicators on the bellhousing like there is with regular EA81s.

JY tranny getting sticky in 2nd and 3rd
mikeshoup replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Rislone != ATF According to Emily @ CCR, it adds a protective layer to the synchros. And I drove it in my wagon's tranny for 5k miles and it didn't cause any problems. You're just replacing one quart of the 4 quarts that it takes to fill it. Though its probably less for a FWD, so maybe only a half a quart. JY tranny getting sticky in 2nd and 3rd
mikeshoup replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Your synchros are just worn out. It is a 25 year old tranny as was mentioned. Try the ATF flush. Then fill it back up with gear oil and a quart of Rislone. Its an engine additive that works wonders on synchros. Should help you considerably. -
The connectors will be under the hood in the back near the driver's side. Black one is to pull up stored codes, green one is for a diagnostic mode. If the CEL is currently on, don't connect any and just read the light on the ECU. The ECU is located under the steering column. Pull of the lower dash panel and look for the big black box.

You live in Washington, land of the Soobs. I'm sure you can find an EA81 in your local junkyards...

Unless the float bowl is emptying, I don't see how changing the fuel pressure will help.

Reasonable price for my RX?
mikeshoup replied to Prospeeder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
$1,000 if it runs and drives away without any problems. $750 is a more realistic number. $500 will probably make it go bye bye quick. -
odd 89 rx tranmission issues
mikeshoup replied to bluto5's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Check for broken CVs. If your car breaks a CV joint, it will not move unless the center diff is locked. -
There's a link at the top right, called USRM. That would've yielded it. Or I'm sure a search for ECU Codes would have yielded it as well. Since you're lazy: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=49918

Crankshaft Timing Belt Sprockets: The Truth
mikeshoup replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I don't know if you're missing the point, or if I'm misinterpreting what you've said. The cams aren't timed differently. They are exactly 180 degrees apart. The offset in the cam sprockets allows that, since the length from one camshaft to the crank sprocket is different than the length from the other camshaft to the crank sprocket. The valves still open at the same time on each side of the engine. -
Oil recomendations for 120k EA82?
mikeshoup replied to Milemaker13's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
FYI, the manual recommends not driving highway speeds if running 5W-30. I usually do 10W-30 in the winter, and 10W-40 in the summer. Just pick a decent brand. -
This was posted sometime before, but starting after a certain year, all Subarus have a speed sensor. I wanna say its either 82 or 83. Whether or not its feedback, whether or not it has cruise control. My 82 FSM shows a speed sensor in GL and GLF models, and not in STD or DL models. Its a two pronged connector behind the dash and above the speedometer.

How about a Wiki to hold the information? That way, users can add and edit information to their liking, and then a few people with knowledge can double check to make sure edits to the wiki are correct. I could make the wiki, just dunno if I could find enough knowledgeable people to help maintain it.

That one doesn't count. Only symptoms they provided was that it spewed white smoke out of the exhaust periodically and steam from underhood. Could very well be intake mani gaskets. Plus, it was his sister's, he can't say for sure the car has never been overheated. All's he said was it wasn't currently overheating (which you can easily have with a blown head gasket). It only take one overheat to blow one. Plus, there's no knowledge of how many miles are on the vehicle. AND its not even an EA82T.
-
Find me one instance of a person blowing a head gasket on a car that didn't have its a 20 year old radiator in it anymore. I think you'll trace the majority of the head gasket problems right down to that radiator. 100,000 miles or not, these old radiators get clogged, corroded, etc. I've also noticed a trend where people look at the radiator as the last thing on their overheating checklist. More than half of the people with overheating problems can solve it with a new radiator. These head gaskets will not blow if its not overheated.

changing my tranny s/r to d/r
mikeshoup replied to tsutomu's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'd probably say just drop the tranny. You could probably pull the engine and tranny as one piece, but don't bother unless you're going to some engine work as well. -
Possible rehash, but...
mikeshoup replied to eponodyne's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The Peugeot 405 uses a 4x108 bolt pattern. Not going to work on our Soobs.
