Wont start under own power... help
mikeshoup replied to Spliff's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There's only one set of cam alignment marks. The cames should be 180 apart. Turn the flywheel until you're lined up with the line in the middle of the three lines. Line the D/S cam so the alignment mark points straight up. Install the D/S belt. Rotate the engine 360deg until you're back at the alignment marks. This will put the D/S mark down. Line the P/S mark up, and install belt. Rotate engine another 360, check that the d/s is up and p/s is down. Rotate 360 again and verify that the p/s is up. Crank engine and cross your fingers. -
Need a little info about 1982 E82 motor
mikeshoup replied to trikerbob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Picture definitely makes it an EA82 which has OHCs. The distributor should work without the ECM. You just need the ignitor and coil (all on the same bracket) as was said early. If the carb is a feedback carb (from CA), it will require the ECM to run. You could throw on a non-feedback hitachi, or just throw a weber onto it. -
i found a hat for my brat
mikeshoup replied to tsutomu's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nice looking BRAT. I'd have a BRAT if I didn't carry around passengers all the time. I predict a turbo BRAT in your future. Long live the EA81Ts. -
Turbo light... Could be the bulb is burnt out? Or the pressure switch is unplugged Or the vacuum line going to the pressure switch is disconnected. The pressure switch is on the passenger side strut tower. Being an 86, there'll be two, ones the fuel cutoff, and the other is the light on the dash. They both look a like.

Feedbacks are Cali-spec, not 49 state spec. That explains the cats. -

Sure they're all non-cali models? IE: none of them had the feedback carb? I thought you mentioned somewhere that one of your cars had a carter-weber feedback? -
Q on half-shaft to gearbox
mikeshoup replied to fredsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, just remove the rear half of the driveshaft, and it should be good. -

I think you're right. I know Cali models for sure had them, then depends on the options. I'll have to look at my FSM I just got, but it showed the different exhausts in 1984, and some had two cats, some didn't. -

EA81s, it was only the Cali models I believe that had two cats. EA82s, all of them I've ever seen has had two cats. But yeah, these engines can definitely benefit from larger exhaust, though I'd say 2"-2.25" is the sweet spot. Much more, and you start losing too much torque I'd think. And its not back pressure really that's needed, its higher flow velocity that helps with scavenging effect. A smaller diameter will have a larger velocity, which gives you more power down low, but as the engine gets up to higher speeds, the smaller diameter exhaust doesn't allow it to breathe enough. This is really only true for N/A, as turbos have different tuning requirements. -
It smells like oil, not something vile. Hasn't done it since I changed the oil, so I'm just gonna shrug it off until it starts happening again.

Im about to replace HG any tips?
mikeshoup replied to flyjum's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There's a pattern to the torquing, and there's three steps they should be torqued to. It should be in just about any service manual. -
Its my wagon's taller brother Sweet ride dawg.

I just bought the car, so dunno if it did it during the summer. It should also be known that this car sat for quite a long time being driven like maybe three times in the past year+. I don't know what weight of oil was in it before, but I put in 10W-40.

EA82t power differences in different countries
mikeshoup replied to Phizinza's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
GVWR is the gross volume weight something. Basically, its the weight of the car when fully loaded with maximum carrying capacity. A subaru has a GVWR somewhere around 3200lbs if I remember correctly, but they also have around 1000lb-800lb carrying capacity, meaning the car weighs 2200 lbs. If BGD would actually understand that, he should realize that the GVWR number means basically sh*t. -
Has anyone put a sbc into a subaru XT
mikeshoup replied to longtrackrmk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yet, my 88 Wagon got 35mpg on the highway. It was a 4WD D/R car. Compared to a 4 cylinder Subaru, a V8 will suck gas. but if that's what you wanna put in it, I say, cool go for it. Not my choice, but then again, you're not me. -
Yeah, it just burns it on cold startups and not at WOT. Strange thing, this morning it did not do it, though its been a warmer morning than the last couple days. I changed the oil today, put a quart of MMO in it, ran it for 5 miles, and changed the oil again. We'll see if it does anymore.
-
Only if overheated. Chances are, if the motor's never been overheated, your HGs are fine. If it has, run a compression check, check for bubbles in the coolant when running, and carefully check to make sure there's no coolant in the oil or visa versa.
-
No kidding. I should just stop using cars all together.
-
Don't really have access to shop air... What about, a rope in the cylinder? If I turned the engine to the compression stroke of each piston before I removed the valve seals, wouldn't the valve up? How do I remove the valve stem seal?
-
My turbowagon gives a puff of smoke out the tailpipe on cold startups. Its actually just started doing this the last couple days. This is typically valve stem seals, right? As long as I top it off with oil, it should be fine? If that's the case, I'll just keep the oil topped off and drive it. Could it be the ATF? I've heard the ATs can cause the engine to burn ATF, not sure when or how. But could this be it? Could it be the turbo? Not sure when turbos can cause an engine to burn oil. Kinda hoping its not valve stem seals, as I can change the rest easier. If its valve stem seals, that required removal of the heads, right? Can I do it myself, or is this something better left to a machine shop?

plug the intake and disty onto your carb block and go!

I plugged EGR on Carb model ...
mikeshoup replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
All 80s soobs have 2 cats. Probably even the new ones (though I don't know for sure). The FSM says the front cat is a typical 3-way (the one at the y-pipe), and it doesn't say anything about the 2nd cat. I think the 2nd cat can be done with personally... -
Yes, we all love DrK's sedan. That thing is sweet. I hate EA82s for their headgaskets, timing belts and lack of room to work in the front of the car. If EA81Ts weren't so hard to find, I'd even consider dropping one in my XT. Instead, I'm thinking EJ22, or those JDM EJ20s that GD keeps talking about. But that's for the next time my EA82T blows up.

The gearing on the 3ATs are terrible. 3.5K @ 55mph seems a little high maybe though. I think my turbowagon is at about 3K @ 55, but yours could have different sized tires/reductions, etc. You're fine. Its the tranny's gearing that sucks.
