EA81 Turbos rock! Got any pictures of that coupe? -
I'm gonna keep both my turbo cars with stock motors for now. Too much money is spent on these damn things. I just want 'em both to run. The EA81T Wagon will get a 4spd or a 5spd swap in it (when I get tired of the 3AT). The XT ("Dorothy") just gonna stay stock and run well. That's all I want. I know power can be had from the EAs, but its at a lot of cost.

Only thing left after that is the driveshaft. My two options are: have the one piece driveshaft lengthened, or to some how attach the carrier bearing to the car, right? May have the driveshaft lengthened. Don't have a welder, and to be honest, it'd probably just be easier to have the driveshaft lengthened.

oh jeese Coolant burning

With GD, replace the intake gaskets. Get 'em from subaru, about $10 for the pair. You need two of: 14035AA160 That's the SOA part number. -
Wait, so then with Jerry's kit, could I use a FT4WD Turbo tranny? and not have to pound out the tunnel? Maybe I wouldn't though because I'd have to get custom axles. Who is Jerry and how much does he sell his kit for?

So...I hit a tree in the Subaru...

Need parts for my 89 Subaru DL wagon
mikeshoup replied to pite0007's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
As long as you get head gaskets for an EA82, you're good. All EA82 Head gaskets are the same. As for cylinder heads, get one from an SPFI or Carb'd EA82. The Turbos and MPFI are different and have dual port intakes. -
I thought about a 3.7 single range from a EA82 Turbo. I wonder if its much smaller in comparison to a 5spd D/R and would be easier to fit underneath? Doesn't seem like it would be though. I'm not gonna do any tranny swapping yet. Gotta get the XT running first. I still have time to think.

Sweet ride. EA81Ts FTW -
Doesn't the 5spd not fit very well underneath without a lift kit?

No start - gas and spark OK...

New timing belts, may be so, but 40,000kms is 25,000miles. That's almost half the life of a 60,000 mile belt. If you didn't replace the tensioners, that life is considerably reduced. Pop off those timing belt covers. The p/s belt may have snapped, or the d/s may have jumped a tooth. You need three things: spark, gas, and compression. If the timing belts are off, your compression is wrong. -
My 88 wagon never gets the heat as hot as I'd like it to either. I wouldn't put a piece of cardboard over the radiator unless it has significant trouble warming up. However, my 84 Turbowagon, that sucker has good heat. Maybe your heater core is partially clogged?

Roni kicked the driver's door at a Red Rocks meet. Left a good dent in it.

Great info Shawn! I would need the manual differential as well, right? The auto is 3.7 and the manual 3.9? I think the 3AT->4spd D/R swap would be it for me for a while. The engine pulls nice, I'm just sick of the 3AT (already!). This info should go into the USRM.

FLASHER Problem - DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!

I use synthetic blinker fluid in mine. Keeps those blinkers flashing real well. -
flexplate alignment question
mikeshoup replied to Jub Nub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
One or more of the bolt holes on the flexplate is offset. This means there's only one way you can install that flexplate. -
Not entirely true. Flat-6s are the most balanced boxers, as the only imbalance is the rocking because the one side of pistons are offset from the other side of the pistons. All boxers are balanced primarily, IE: momentum of pistons. However a Flat Twin and a Flat 4 (and others) have a kinetic energy imbalance. Ever wonder why the ER27 has a lighter flywheel than the EAs? Because the heavy EA flywheel helps absorb vibrations due to the kinetic energy imbalance. Its not a huge imbalance, but its there.

What's the complete recipe needed to convert an EA81 from a 3AT to say a 4spd D/R? I can't seem to find a post anywhere listing everything. Can find 'em for the EA82, but iirc, the EA81 has a little bit more to it. Thanks!

The ER27 in the XT6 made 145HP @ 5200RPM, and 156ft-lb @ 4,000RPM. You can get the full set of specs by downloading section 1 of the FSM at: http://mshoup.us/docs/fsm/EA82/ Flat 6 out of balance? By whose definition? There's very little imbalance in a flat 6. The kinetic energy is balanced, as well as the momentum of the pistons. There's a little front to back rocking, but not much. If this is your 'math' theory again, I give up.

Okay, so I was driving to get the car registered, and learned what the problem is. I went WOT on the highway trying to pass a semi, and the car started to surge really bad. Then the ECS light came on and stayed on. Pulled over, it threw code 14, which is the MAF I believe. The car's on its third MAF from what I understand... I doubt its the MAF now (though, likely I guess). Anyone have suggestions? Could there be some other sensor that's throwing bad values, making the ECU think the MAF is bad? (I don't know, I'm grasping at thin air here!)

making a vibrationless 4x4 wagon
mikeshoup replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Let's not pick on Bgd, or insult him. His ignorance is astounding sometimes, but hey, we all got to learn. Now Bgd, stop be so freaking arrogant and stubborn that you're not going to listen to other's suggestions. A lot of your ideas are really way off base, and make no sense in the physical world. A couple good courses at the local community college in Physics, Chemistry and Material Sciences could help you a LOT. Don't take this as an insult or me calling you stupid. You're not stupid and you have a good head on you. Just somewhere along the line, you learned quite a few things wrong.
