  1. I've found that 7/16x14 works the best I have those studs threaded into 3 of my EA82 engines and they hold very well
  2. Timing is supposed to be 20 degrees BTC for SPFI, I'm not sure what ur timing is gonna be for a EA81 cuz of the compression difference. I'd say turn the timing up til u get detonation and then back it down a little bit.
  3. Well first off I gotta say I'm really dissapointed in Subaru's Onboard Dio systems. Its a sad day for technology when you cant read a code off a system with a Genysis or Motus scanner, reader. Anyways according to motus it says I have to ground out a pin on a connector under the dash.. I looked under there and found bout 10 connectors that are unplugged. What color is the connector and how many pins/wires does it have? Its on a customers car and I told them to come back to the shop today so I could read/clear the system. Supposed to ground out pin 6 to read the codes and then ground out the pin 3 times in 12 seconds to clear the system correct? So yea, location/color of connector and numbers of pins would be greatly appreciated! thanks in advance
  4. wow dude! you are my hero. I've always thought about doing this, but since its so hard to get a front clip of a TT EJ engine, I've never gone through with it. Please let us know how it goes in the mud and offroad. Looks like its going to be a blast to drive! Great work
  5. check the front diff dipstick o-ring. I've actually bought cars from people because they though their transmission was going out. The o-rings will dry out and shrink and when the gear oil gets hot, it lets it bypass up the dipstick
  6. The oil thing, it depends on if you've ran your car or not. The oil is going to read higher when the oil is warm due to expansion. It wont raise it 3 inches, but it will make a difference. And another thing these are flat engines (which a lot of mechanics arent used to) so they could have added 4.5 quarts and then started it to finish filling the oil filter (granted they primed the filter before installing it). Now the oil has pumped out to the cams and sits. You figure the cam cases and valve covers are going to hold 1/2 a quart or so. When they checked the oil after 60 seconds of running, it could have shown down 1/2 a quart so they added to top it off at the full mark. Now your car is a 1/2 quart full which will show drastically at the dipstick. The lil extra bit of oil isnt going to hurt the engine. I've had soobs brought to me with oil 5 inches up past full. Thing ran fine, it just had some oil blowby. Dont shoot the mechanic just yet.
  7. NEVER use any kind of stopleak in subaru's unless its stuff called Dyke. It's 10 dollars a bottle, in a oil jug shaped black bottle. Green writing on the bottle. I've used that stuff for years in subarus with NO ill effects on the heater core and raidiator. All the other stop leaks plug up any small metal screens or mesh it comes in contact with.
  8. goddamn thats a pricey headgasket job. If you were in Alaska, I'd do it for 500, you buy the head gaskets. But yea, you need to look at getting a better type of head gasket. Subaru used the crappy 4 or 5 layer head gaskets for a few years and they are pure junk. I'd really like to know what they were thinking spraying black paint onto a metal gasket. Like that stuff if really going to hold up. I'm guessing you have a SOHC 2.5 in that legacy? Order head gaskets for a 2002 2.5 SOHC. Thats in the newest years where they updated the head gaskets to the single layer metal. I still run across the "recalled" gaskets from the dealer*************** up here. Good luck

  10. ya I'd give up on the lawsuit thing. you wont have a leg to stand on. Its basically common automobile knowledge to keep up on tire pressure. its one of those things like checking your oil. if you didnt check your oil for 3000 miles and had a conn rod go because of it, subaru isnt going to replace your engine. It's going to fall back on you, due to your own ignorance. I work at a subaru shop (independently owned) and I run into that binding issue all the time. people running different tread tires on their cars, or putting a spare on thats the wrong size. Not the mechanic or the manufacturers fault, ITS THE OWNERS FAULT! Now keep in mind I drive my lifted EA82 wagon every day with two different tread tires front and rear, but I you can get away with that on the older ones due to the lack of a VC diff. God I love the olders soobys more and more every day. If my tranny goes, I replace it because its my fault, I dont go chasing subaru with a lawsuit
  11. turbo I wouldnt really know.. I hate em.. but on the NA DOHC I just unbolt the exhaust and the engine mounts and pitch stopper and jack the engine up. You'll spend bout the same amount of time doing that as you would putting the extentions together inside the spark plug hole, and that way you dont take a chance on cross threading the plugs when u put them back in. The engine will raise up enough to clear the frame rails and you'll have straight access.
  12. Ok at work I have a 2002 Legacy Outback Sedan with a SOHC EJ25 with a bad rod knock. I have a 1996 EJ22 sitting on the floor that has like 50k miles on it. I found out today that they arent swappable because the 02 intake is about a half inch wider. My boss is trying to tell me that I can use the EJ25 heads and put it on the EJ22 shortblock. That way we can use the 02 intake manifold. For some reason this doesnt some do-able to me. EJ25 is a slightly wider bore isnt it? He's claiming that he talked to some other subaru mechanic that had done the swap before from 99 to an 01. but the engines being 6 years apart and the outer parts on the engine being different I dont see it happening. I dont have a spec book close to me and I'm used to the older engines so I'm figuring the 2.5 has a bigger bore than the 2.2 not a longer stroke. What do you guys think? All in all, we want the 02 running again and the cheapest EJ25 I can find is for 1600 bucks out of a wreck and the timing gears are busted
  13. I'm definately interested in Scott's drop down brackets.. I've talked to him before about it. I dont like the front rake the rear tires have. No sense in cutting out good body metal if a 2 inch bracket will adjust the tire back some.
  14. custom CV axles with slide yolks in the middle? Like a Ford or Chevy rear driveline uses.... might work, but its gonna be spendy
  15. Alright, I got a 92 legacy sedan 5MT with a blown engine, and then a 1995 Impreza Sedan EJ22 ODB2 engine sittin at the shop. Only thing is, it came out of a wreck, so the valve cover shattered and it sheared the bolt off into the rocker arm assembly and the timing pulley is cracked. I'm not sure if I have another adjustable rocker arm motor layin around, so I figured I'd check here to see if they are swappable with the non adjustable rocker assembly.. Anyone change out that part? And 1995 is still non-interference? The belt wasnt broke, but it jumped time bout 90 degrees during the wreck And other than it having an EGR valve on the intake, I'm gonna use the old EJ22 intake and just block off the EGR pipe coming out of the head. Let me know what you think please. I gotta get this thing on the road within the next week. thanks guys
  16. 7/16 is what we used IIRC when I stripped out my exhaust studs. I have also ran a bolt from the top of the rear strut assembly (17mm head on the bolt, 12x1.25) into the hole when i didnt have a tap..
  17. 2200 lbs? I weighed my car last year before the lift and it weighed in at 3400 lbs
  18. My D/R N/A tranny shifts fine from low to hi or hi to low. I use it like a 10 speed in the winter time. Never makes any bad noises Thats interesting to see that you "arent" supposed to shift them like that.

  20. yea thats what I gathered too was 4.11 was the rear diff ratio. I'm going to just put the transmission in and drive it.. if it binds up, I'll put the impreza rear diff in. I wish subaru woulda left the nice lil stickers on the rear diff with the ratio.... damn them..
  21. whats up guys. so I got another new gen question for ya. I have a 96 Legacy LS wagon (EJ22) with a A/T in it. tranny is toast. I have a 95 Impreza sedan (ej22) in it for parts. Tranny # is different Legacy - TZ102ZAAAA Impreza - TZ102ZA3BA Wondering if the rear ends will work with each other. I looked through the board and the only thread I could find that made any sense was http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=68110&highlight=legacy+rear+end+ratio but it didnt really list the Transmission codes with the rear end ratio. Give me a shout back and let me know if they will work, or if I need to pull the impreza rear end to put in the legacy along with the transmission
  22. so the intakes are the same then? both cars are automatics so ist got the torq converter. So I'ma just bolt the thing up. doesnt sound like i need to change anything on it. thanks
  23. there is no egr pipe on either motors thank god. thats one thing that I was worried about, but after pulling both motors, the only real difference I saw was on the water jacket and othe rhtan that, everything is the same.. to hell with the 8 bolt bellhousings.. the 4 bolt are soo much easier to work on
