Timing belts and tuneup questions
torxxx replied to bizboy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
EA82s are non interference motors. I wouldnt even bother about checkin em at 20,000 miles, just keep your old ones in the back of the car as spares. If you buy new Subaru OEM t-belts from the dealer, they will last 60,000 miles. The belt tensioners bolt to the block and are spring loaded. No special tool needed. -
New User Subaru Vortex wheel bearings
torxxx replied to 85vortex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
vortex? I'm assuming this is Aussie for RX or XT... If its an EA82 motor, the rear wheel bearings are serviceable. I think theres a write up in the USRM on rear wheel bearings -

if you are gonna buy a new alt. might as well do the GM conversion. Same price, twice the amps.

with the exhaust done like I told you, a MSD Blaster coil with your timing advanced shift at 5500 rpms. Thats where these motors make top hp

you obviously dont know much about jets. To start out. I'm a commercial fisherman. I've been doing it since I was old enough to walk. I've been running boats since I was old enough to see over the steering wheel. I've fished and ran a jet boat in Bristol Bay for 3 years. A 32" foot aluminum jet powered bowpicker. Powered by 2 Marine Power 454's. Boat does 38 knots (with 300 gallons of fuel on board) I've had that boat in 3 inches of water doing 35 knots. I've hunted and fished all over alaska's river systems. I've taken a jetboat up the Copper River through Miles and Childs Glaciers. Now that you know where I'm coming from: My problems with it is the fact that its prop driven, which makes the need for that skag welding to the bottom of the boat. Right there, you just lost 6 to 8 inches of draft. With a jet, nothing sticks below the bottom of the boat. The jet is set into the bottom of the boat raised up about a inch or two. Rigged with a grate rake, these boats will run anywhere. With a jet, there is no need for a transmission or clutch because you have full 360 degree steering due to the reverse bucket. I do know what a keel cooler is, and it creates drag. you add turbulance to the bottom of the boat. You also say that: "Top speed varies depending on the weight of the boat and the depth of the water (they are fastest in 6" or less with a soft bottom), but my boat will run 40 mph in water that would burn up a jet drive in seconds." In mud, that will jump right though the jet and not hurt anything. I've seen boats pump straight sand through the jet when jumping sand bars. Yea in a few years, jet impellers have to be replaced, but if you ran your boat in the places we run jetboats (gravel bottomed rivers) you'd be replacing props faster then I'd be replacing an impeller. I looked at your pictures and I've had boats in places like your pictures shown. Let me ask you this, can you jump beaver dams with that thing? Probably not, because of the skag under the prop. With a jet, not a problem. My biggest thing is the amount of money paid for a boat that you can only use in one part of the US. The same boat made with a jet drive could be used anywhere

5 spd d/r tranny question
torxxx replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well wait.. what console are we talkin about? the center console (hand brake, 4wd shifter lil tray under that etc.) or the console where the stereo, ashtray cig lighter are? -
Hell yea. I'm sure he'd love to have the topper. I got a buddy down in anchorage that could pick it up. he's gonna be coming back to FBKS sometime in the next week.

yeah.. axles and the boots are warranteed. Axles have a lifetime warranty if you bought them from any parts store. The boots are usually a one year warranty. Drive em til they snap, pull the axle and go get a free one. I put 10,000 miles on axles after the boots rip

5 spd d/r tranny question
torxxx replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yes you will have to convert the console. You might be able to get away with leavin the hand brake where it is, but I'm 90% sure the d/r linkage on a EA81 differs from an EA82. I think there maybe a little bit of cuttin involved. -
a good exhaust. 70 bucks.take it to a muffler shop have them cut the old exhaust off near the carrier bearing and make it 2 inch straight pipe (No muffler) to the back, where the old muffler was. yes they do make k&n filters for these cars.. Even that, thats not gonna make your GL "FAST"

I'll second what the guy above me said. same stuff happens to me. I'd just get an external voltage regulator and wire it in. Then you can still use the one with the internally blown voltage reg

Hehehe I've been wondering when thats going to happen too. Luckily, the driver of the Brat (my roommate) has a lot of practice being chased down the track. We've only had one close call and that was when he cut me off going into a corner at 40 mph. his rear bumper missed my front by 2 inches

That is the Fuel Tank Vent line that runs into the hard line on the air box, around the airbox to the evap canister. So its not a vacumn line. It being unplugged doesnt really hurt anything. If its the hard line thats not hooked the airbox (below between the disty and the intake manifold) that is the vacumn advance for the disty. That does need to be plugged in

torxxx replied to NVBigBlue's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Thats AWESOME that someone did it for a ea81.. That means my roommates Brat is gonna be gettin it done. Or would it be easier to just put a SPFI EA82 motor in there? -
well I finally got a trailer made of it. The final movie will be done in Adobe Premiere or Ureal Studio. Tell me what you think. Its nothin hardcore, just havin fun one weekend. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=4842&sort=1&cat=500&page=1 Oh yea, this trailer is rated PG-13

I work in the marine industry, and that boat is actually kind of a joke. It says its made for "It goes through shallow water and soft mud. Made for going duck hunting, redfishing, and froging in the shallow bayous." How do they figure that? it's prop driven. That thing draws at least a foot of water even when its on step. Slap a 5 1/2 inch hamilton jet on that, you could run that boat in 1 inch of water.

thats cool that they swap out. EA82's are different sizes auto to manual
