From what I've learned here, every speaks pretty highly of the ea81 and lack of timing belt.. Why did subaru change it to a less stable timing system? sucks you gotta change t-belts now every 40-60 thousand miles.

Gonna have to hijack this.... For you guys that replaced the exhaust, did it require a lot of bending for the new ones? I was thinking about cutting off everything from the Cat back and putting 1 7/8" to a glasspack and then 2 or 2 1/4" from the glasspack to the back where the stock muffler was.. How complicated of a project is this?

Best year wagon to look for
torxxx replied to subanoob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
From my expirences up here: I like my 86 GL.. Its a great daily driver (driven hard too) A friend has a 92 Loyale and I had a 87 or an 85 with a AT and they were pretty ****ty cars. As for the carb, mine was fine for 18 years, and after I started messin with it, things started happening to it. The dual range is awesome compared to the push button 4wd. Lo gear really helps I've also been told my a parts store manager, and a few mechanics that in July 1985 (which would make it an 86) they changed the timing belts somehow and the years after 07/85 had more problems with belts breaking than the earlier ea82s the 86 GL is also nice if you like a car with no power steering/AC engine driven fan. I have tons of room to work on stuff.. no need to pull radiator to work on front of engine The 92 loyale has had tons of problems.... -
I shift my EA82 (non turbo) at 5500 most of the time I've ran it to 6500 rpms in 2nd and 3rd.. still good power, but it starts droppin at about 5800 rpms

Oil Change?
torxxx replied to asuman1179's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
they are bad because they mass produce the filters as cheap as they can. Filter tests have been done (filters cut open) heres the link: http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil_filter_study/ Fram filters basically use toilet paper as the filtration system Where as WIX, Ac delco and puralator would use carboard Hope this answers the question -
there's a dipstick on the tranny fowards the firewall... May have to really look around to find it on the new soobs. You could change the gear oil, but look at it and see how the oil condition is. I usually change my tranny oil once a year. to do that, its about straight down from the stickshift on the bottom of the tranny theres a 21 or 22 mm drain plug. Drain and put plug back in, then fill through the tranny dipstick.. Slowly squirt the gear oil in, if you put too much in, it will burp out gear oil all over everything Oil seals go on the front of the crankshaft, back of the tranny, sides of the tranny where the axles stubs stick out, in the rear end, and on the oil pump

no hte codes come out at the ECU under the steering column there should be a little red light that will flash a code
-
dont waste the time on a 2wd disty I was looking at that before and people has said it was a myth for the ea82s the power curve deal was for ea81

How long do you think I have?
torxxx replied to 88xt6joe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I drove a set of axles tile they snapped on the front all boots were torn, filled them back up wth grease and made ducktape boots they clicked and ticked and popped.. and I ended gettin 6 more months out of then before the shafts actually snapped if it does, just tie it up.. not tight on the shaft.. let it hang so the shaft can still spin I then drove for 3 weeks with busted front cv joints in 4 high made drivin a lil more fun -
nice job. I need to do that same cutting for my car here sometime. time taken to cut all 4 fenders?

I noticed top end gain in acceleration with the accel in my 86 just my 2 cents

how many miles are on the car?

hahahahahaha. I'm found a 150 dollar 86 GL just like mine except its the rust colored paint...... so I'm either gonna attempt to ghetto-Fi it enought to make it look like a Fast and the Furious car with 3 foot tall spoilers, or make a Brat out of it.. (cut the cab off right behind the back seat and modify lexan glass somewhere aroudn there to close off the cab..
