I'm looking for testimonials as to what you think of it compared to open or limited slip diffs. Me personally. . . I swore by the lsd for a long time. The first few guys to get theirs' welded were still fairly new at offroading, so really showed me nothing special. But Ken finally got one. And one day we had a chance to find out their differences at a pretty gnarly rocky climb at Reiters Pit. What caused me to really make the little hatch work with lots of tries, Ken was able to walk right up. So I broke down and got one. Now I swear, the whole 4X thing got a whole lot easier! And to me, the extra 7 minutes it takes to add/subtract a rear axle to make it offroadable/streetable is totally worth the added ability. . . .And I still haven't broken a rear axle (knock on wood) just for not being so hard on the gas whle doing crazy snit.

What are ya gonna use for front axles? How do you plan to get all the travel out of them. (enquiring minds wanna know.) Sounds cool so far Tony.WCSS6 is gonna be a pretty cool place to be for those who like/love monster soobs. Holy Cow.

Ken might not be the guy to ask. lol Try here: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=14 -
I know we're getting waaaaay off topic here, but. . . I've had 2 75 280s. There's no way I'm ever gonna knock one of them. But I did get a chance to see under the hood of a 68/69 mercedes, and the motor was exactly the wame as the one in your 260. With the dual side drafts and everything.

Many companies were involved during the war, including Mitsubishi, Mercedes, Cadillac, Chrysler etc. I wouldn't call the technology a "rip off", I'd call it shared technology between the Germans and the Japanese during wartime. If you look at the Datsun Z motor, it's an exact copy of the Mercedes inline 6 from the 60's. . . I'd say the flat four we use looks quite a bit like a VW or Porsche. Who created/copied the V8?

Thanks again Jeff. I successfully copied it only a disc, I'm on my way to Kinkos to give it a try. . . Whoohoo!

Stuffing a EA81 into a 1978 Wagon.
ezapar replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I was gonna post something just like that. It seems to be reasonable to think that it would all work since it did come in a 81 brat. They are exacly the same size right? So the components from one should go into a wagon. . . right? Jason/Chryslr swapped them both succesfully into that 80 brat he lifted. Sounds like an awesome idea. You'd have a pretty cool car then. How about an ea-81t? hehe -
Good to meet you. You have mail.

I went there and had a rim straightrened. Cost 100 bucks. His ways are very primitive and didin't true up the rim very well. I was dissatisfied and wouldn't recommend going there.

The play you describe is normal. It allows for suspension travel. You should be able to get the same "play" out of the rears if you check them. Nothing to worry about.

Sorry to hear a little mud kept you from driving it home Shawn. Happy to hear you got some mud on it. Now you just need a lift and some tires and a welded diff. Then you can get back there and make short work of that little mud hole you guys were playing in. hehe I'm glad everyone is in one piece and everything is getting resolved.

That thing looks cooler and cooler every time you post photos Glenn. Can't wait to see it on the trail. Hopefully before WCSS6. But definitely at WCSS6 right?

Seattle Area Shops or Mechanics?
ezapar replied to Dante's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Honesty and knowledge are two different things. Just because the guy at the Dealership will level with you about an O2 sensor doesn't mean he knows jack about putting dual carbs on an ea81. Betting he's never seen the set-up. Brian is your answer. He IS the Guru. Ask him. -
WOW. Not a whole lot of ribbing I can give you guys. I can say the only more desolate place I've ever been to is the Bonneville Salt Flats. You folks need to move to where the trees are. What Shawn said about the autos seeming to do better than the dual ranges. . . First gear low is no good for that stuff, hi range baby. The only piece of recovery gear I can think of that would help is one of those "anchors" that digs itself into the dirt and acts as something to hook your rope/chain/strap to. Still might wanna get one to get you guys out. I think that between me and Ken, we have about 200 feet of "reach out and grab ya", maybe a little more. The cool thing about this is the bonding that's gonna come of it. All of you who attended and especially the ones who have to wait it out a little will have a pretty gnarly experience in common. So who's holding the hat?

You know that without pics, none of us are gonna believe any of it. LOL The stories sound like it was nuts!!! NOBODY shot video of it??? I'm SOOOO jealous you guys got to get into some crazy stuff like that. Are any of you guys locked/welded in the rear? I'm telling you, it makes the lsd seem like an open diff. . . I've come to believe. Was anybody wearing swampers? Come-alongs and winches? Jacks, shovels? You know the Hatch Patrol (probably mostly me) is gonna give the group some smack for not bringing recovery stuff. God I gotta see what got so many Soobs stuck!! EZ PICS! PICS! PICS! PICS! video??

My 1980 outback! (wagon makeover)

You kick rump roast Austin! That looks sweet. I really like the yellow. It will show mud well. When are ya gonna bring it by for me to see? -
Good news for RallyX in Seattle area
ezapar replied to edrach's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Sounds good. But if it's gonna be at the Pacific Raceways again, I'll pass. My imp got a huge gash from a big rock that goes down both passenger doors, not to mention a million smaller ones. Just too rough for the daily driver. . . -
Being like Cartman (Vehicle Weight)
ezapar replied to Adam N.D.J.'s topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
We stopped at a scale on the way to the Rubicon, the unhatched weighed in at 3800. Figure it gained more weight as we added a bunch of supplies when we got there. My hatch is bone dry light. I keep only the absolute essentials, probably carry less than 100 extra lbs of stuff including my chain and comealong and tools. My spare doesn't always ride with me, but that probably adds about 60-70 more lbs. In all, with my skinny rump roast, I'd say it weighs in at about 2600 or so. I'd like to weigh it to know for certain. Oh yeah, I have the roll bar that adds about another 60 lbs. . . But I substitute finesse for big heavy "road warrior" bumpers too. Stock bumpers on an 86 hatch are good and weightless. -
I sent you a bigger photo Matt, but for future reference, here's one for the manual. (or whatever) EZ

Sent you an email.

With my swampers and a weber, I get 25mpg on the freeway, 23 or so average mpg. . . That's been standard for all 5 Webers I've bought and installed. I think Ken gets about the same. The Unhatched (Peppy the Little Brown Mule) got 29 mpg all the way to the Rubicon last Summer pushing 31's thru the transfer case. . . Must be the way the Weber is hooked up or something. ________________________________________________________ You've got a pretty good list of stuff there Scooby. I say your order should go like this: 2,1,3,7,5,4,8,6 Do one at a time, it will take time and money, so plug away. After these, then worry about other stuff. You're gonna need time behind teh wheel learning to 4X a Soob too.
