    LSD vs VLSD

My $.02. Way back when, I procured a vlsd for my first hatch back. Came out of a early t-leg. It didn't work for crap, totally useless, a waste of lots of time and money. I've had several clutch type lsds, which worked much better than that one, but never compared to a welded diff. If you're stopped in your ea81 off roader, a little off camber, that lsd is useless too. They only seem to work with momentum. But. I've got one in my imp from an 00 imp RS. It's way smaller, totally looked like an open diff. It has performed amazingly well. As in, to get out of my garage, I always had to get a little run at it, cuz one tire comes mostly off of the ground causing them to spin. Now, I can totally creep out and over that spot without losing any kind of traction at all. In the mornings, there's a really off camber right turn that would always get the right rear tire spinning. Now they either both spin or both grip. It's made the car way more predictable and easier to tell when the rump roast end is gonna come out. This one has 84kish on it. Like I said, totally DON'T care what anybody read somewhere. I just have to kinda believe that the VLSD had to be improved over the older huge ones. Below are images of the two, both sitting next to open diffs. Mine.
  2. I've seen quite a few dead gen 1s 2s and even a gen 3 up in the woods over the years. This one was the most recent one, that gen 3.

    LSD vs VLSD

Let's hear your pros and cons and what you believe to be true about their differences. What do you know from experience? Not, what have you read? After you guys post up, I'll shed some light on the subject.
  4. No. There is no serial # or any identification at all for the later vlsds. Only in the early turbo legs, and they said VLSD in big old letters on the back. Best way to tell is to jack up the rear of the car. Spin a wheel, if the other spins the same way, you're golden. Keep in mind, should you decide to find a vlsd and it's not the same ratio, that it's easily converted. There should still be a write up in the repair manual.
  5. Yeah, no biggie. I have a big rump roast floor jack for the shop. Probably weighs 80 lbs. Way too big and bulky to be hauling around in the car.
  6. We're looking for jacks specifically for speed and lighness as well as low profile. These, or mine anyways, will be used exclusevely for Rally X and swapping tires as fast as possible. Ed. I went to the Kent store. I was returning a faulty nail gun, didn't want to push the issue. . . I did ask them though and looked through their flyer.
  7. Do you have to be a member to get that coupon? I went into the store, and it was at it's normal price. Nothing in the instore flyer. Their website says on sale for $109. . . http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=68053+1.5Ton+
  8. Doesn't look there was any issue with power. You did pretty good for what appeared to be an open diff, or an LSD that's not grabbing very well. That's a rough little patch and I know the camera doesn't show how steep it probably is. Constructive critisism: Lower your air pressure in your tires a bunch, looks like they're at street pressure. Get out and walk the line you want to take, tell your spotter where you want your wheels, pay attention to him. The third or fourth time you hit an obstacle and don't go over it, get out and find a different way.
  9. I'm so paranoid about my truck getting stolen. It sits in my yard bahind a gate, with two dogs, with two cars parked in the driveway. Also keep a club on the wheel and there's a secret little kill switch I use all the time. bump
  10. I actually pulled my crawler out and went thru a battery yesterday because the weather was good enough. I've got a pretty sweet pile of rocks now all set up for it.
  11. and sell me the wrx stockers when you do lift it. I need some extras to put next year's snow tires on.
  12. I have mixed feelings. . . I've lifted two imps with struts and tires. Really enjoyed the first one till it rolled. The second I had to return to normal and then actually lower an inch or so. There's just something about how imprezas handle man. They're friggin rally cars and are just so fun to drive. . . Either way, good score. Gimme a call ya grumpy ol' man, your pms are turned off.
  13. Top comes off of it right? Very cool desert mobile.
  14. In fairness. This committee has been on board 3 years? 2 in WA, one in OR so far, alternated. What you fail to understand is just how hard it is to get a suitable venue and a date at the same time. No really. It's a ***************. Keep in mind, the committee or at least some of them have to drive to the venue once or twice before the show to set things up. How far would you want to drive two or three times Brian? And in fairness, I believe the highest concentration of people at the show would be those from Washington State. Also keep in mind, this has turned from the USMB's very own little shindig to a Nasioc show with the USMB getting an invite.
  15. So you've got one of those king sized igloos eh?
  16. Your pics wouldn't have been worthy of an off road thread. Driveway pics aren't off road pics. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=93338
  17. I'm gonna be up there for the night. Is there snow on the ground? Should I put on my snow tires? Thanks.
  18. I used my rear seat belts once as tow straps to recover my gen one wagon.
  19. Went and took my boy to the snow for his 6th birthday today. Saw the deadest Subaru I've ever seen anywhere. There were bullet holes in the wheels even! Was very sad to see a lot of debris and junk at the target range we stopped and had lunch at.
  20. 3 inches is about right. . .
  21. The guy I got that big ol' ru bar from in AU has one. He's sent me several pics. Dolls it up in WRC vinyl and stuff.
  22. Check your motor mount. That's my bet. Motor lifts, pulls on the boot, whallah. Ask Jeff.
  23. Nice to see you still have that sedan. Always one of my favorites, it stands out on the poster I made.

    Shoot.

There's no reason to make the rear diff any higher than y-pipe clearance, seeing as the y-pipe has to go first down the trail and the rear diff is only following.
  25. Bring 'em. Broke in the new sedan last night. God that thing is lighter and easier to handle than my wagon ever was. What a big difference. Was out till 1:30 a.m. Caught this guy in his shorts putting on chains.
