  1. ok, i misunderstood. this legacy mat fits in an ea82 just fine.
  2. there is a common ground. there are 6 wires to all 4 spakers. both rears share a ground, both fronts share a ground. the aftermarket radio will connect 6 of these waire. leave one front ground, and one rear ground unused on the stereo.
  3. no. the ea81 has just a square smugglers' trunk. the legacy unit is designed to fit in the spare tire well. the ea81 has the tire under the hood. i wonder if this legacy storage would fit under the hood?
  4. Do the hose clamp trick. that, or rip the heat shileds off. it is thin metal that gets rusty and falls apart. the inside of the cat failing is not as likely.
  5. the heads and intkes are different 1 port vs 2. whay you can do is swap the entire turbo engine and harness into the gl, along with the engine crossmember and all the pipes. what can be better, is you swap the turbo heads and intake onto the gl short block. this gives you mpfi, and you can ditch the turbo, because you will have a block with more compression. you still have to swap the ecu and harness, but you do not need the engine crossmember. the easiest thing to do is take the gl shortblock, put the mpfi heads onto it, and fix up the gl-10 and makit NA mpfi.
  6. how about a spot mirror or a wide angle stick-on? if you stand alongside the car, you should see the driver's face in the mirror when adjusted properly. The spot mirror will help you see the white fog line and the road immediately next to the vehicle, while the rest of the mirror is looking straight behind you.
  7. This body of text is an adaptation of an existing article for compilation. I did not write this, but it is sure handy info.
  8. The GL-10 was the luxo trim package, and the seats were more plush with velour and the buttons, where the regular gl had more of a tweedish type fabric. the gl-10 seat has a height adjust lever on the side. pulls up or down, extends for leveage. Check the vin plates from the dash and the door sill. what is the build date? can the dude produce a title, or is this a parts car? 9. If you are looking for alternators, they work from 83-84 subarus. sometimes there can be a fitment issue with certain AC setups, where there is a rounder alternator for (usually turbo/xt) for the square compressor with an inboard alternator. the more common setups are a round compressor with the alternator outside. This alternator has a flat frontal are a with a little bit of a lip around the circumfrence. this alternator in the other styles place can butt against the bracket before taking all of the slack out of the belt, resulting in loose engagement as the belt seats over time. you can overcome this by grinding on the side of the alternator to remove the lip where it touches the bracket. a nissan maxima alternator fits, too, and is 60 amps, instead of 30 amps.
  10. This car is a 1987 with gl-10 seats. the steering wheel is 1987 specific. 85-86 was more squarish, and 88 thru the loyale had the long horizontal middle, the dildoey steering wheel. 1987 is somewhat specific to its year, as this was a tansition year. The wiring harness is schematically similar to a 1988, but has connectors similar to a 1986. The sensors and distributor are compatible with 86. by 88, the design remained considtent through the 1994 loyale. The instruments have a green illumination. if you replace your engine, the harness form the intake will swap over to an 88+ manifold, and the manifold itself swaps. The connector for the engine harness is similar to 1986. If you use a motor from 88 or later, you need your original intake, or at least swap your87 harness to the 88+ intake.
  11. one thing to suggest, a bad engine temp sensor or corroded plug. 2, ignition timing, it should be at 20 deg btdc 3, timing belt alignment, could have skipped a tooth, or is installed a tooth off by the previous mechanic. search "timing belt check and adjustment" on this forum, and "the art of subaru maintenance" eisodes 7 and 8 on youtube. This will give you the basis on understanding the oddity of the ea82 engine. your 'tbi' setup is called 'spfi' in subaru terms (single port fuel injection) after reading the timing belt article and watching the videos, you can easily check your timing marks by removing the outer covers and rotating the crank
  12. You might be able to remedy the lifter tick by rebuilding the il pump. there is a plate internally that the screws can get loose on, and it's common to remove the oil pump and re-torque these screws. this work can easily be don in an afternoon, along with other routine service such as cam seals and timing belts at the same time. we have shop space, and would be happy to help you with working on your car, just to shoot the breeze and have a few beers, all in a saturday afternoon! I like working on subarus, and i am in it more for the enthusiasm than for any money i can make. It's the kind of thing we do just for the fact that someone would appreciate it. I hope to see you at one of out weekend meets, we need to grow our local subaru crowd!
  13. I am available after 5 pm tue-thurs, and the rest of the week is for working on cars. Depending on cost comparison, we can do the head gaskets for within the price of another motor to swap. HG's are not the end of the world, and once fixed, are beter than new.
  14. i AM HAVING THIS SHOP DO THE WHEEL BEARING IN THE FORESTER, since i do not have the right tools. We have a Subaru Alliance here in milwaukee, and a shop space. i have an engine crane, and have a shop full of old school soobs. Once i finish this ea82 head gasket, we could do the swap in an afternoon. 414-793-7728
  15. If your car is SPFI fuel injected, this is your code. is your car a 3-door? http://www.economysuperstar.com/milesfox/subaru/service/ecu.htm
  16. tell everyone to quit parting off repairable cars. this makes ebay sellers hungry, selling parts to people that dont have cars left to put them on! i have been seeing a lot of original rnning ea82t's being chucked out for ej22's what ever happened to the days when you had gl wagon, that you had to invent your lifts, bellhousings, and swaps. nowadays you can go but grandma's car and order sjr's online. pretty soon we will have this problem with 1st and 2nd gen legacy and impreza. As the new market is buying up new soobs as a sales trend, there will be a few people scouring the earth for the last non-interference motors and cars.
  17. non turbo auto and manual are the same. 23 splines
  18. There are guys in coumbus, oh, and one guy in hillsdale michigan. I am from fort wayne area, and i was down to columbus to hit up the junkyards for ea82's, since they were scarce in indiana.
  19. try replacing the engine temp sensor. typical symptoms are starting up fine, but once warm, runs crappy and hard to start. Typically the connector corrodes.
  20. the title of the thread says it all: Re: eating more drivers side timing belts
  21. I think it may be possible to use an impreza or legacy(libery) axle and change out the inner bearing seal on the knuckle to the impreza seal. I think this is a Numbchux discovery. correct me if i'm wrong.
