  1. you may be able to swap on the DOJ form an AT TURBOaxle since its 23 splines but has the diameter of the 25 spline axles an impreza 1.8 fwd 5spd axle will work, being the right length for the ea82 and the right spline for the xt6 hub
  2. Tell me about the rain. it was a wall of downpour we drove through like a stargate portal just a mere 100 yds befor the junkyard entrance. you know that the first instance if rain is the slickest on a road, especially a junkyard entrance with whaqtever slick of oils and coolants abath. needless to say an understeer and a brake lockup revealed a 2-door lumina as i rounded past the truck ahead of me. jackass award of the day goes to me. anyway there was a coolant leak, but it was the water pipe popped out the pump so a quick fix with the 12mm did the trick. we drove down to the pigz' to file an accident report. just a form in the mail. the police were more concerned about us standing in the street and a video camera rolling than the fact that no one officially had insurance, or the TW has no plates(but freshly registered this morning.) but anyway my luck seems to turn bad driving other peoples cars, like the tiume in the lincoln and what was found under the seat blah blah, dont rid dirty etc.......anyway. bad luck turns to good luck at least it has been with me. anyway you all know me:clap:
  3. i would most likely find my way to c-bus. as i have gone there before to put subarus toghether. what side of town are you on? is your motor the 2.2 or 2.5?
  4. so did i, on an 87 rx with a bad rod. one gen 1 head and the other gen 2. pulles the valves and cracks to the valve guides. so what did i do? i'll tell you... port them out witrh a dremel and put them on a carb block. drove cross country and shot a documentary. no problems some 15000 mles later.......
  5. undo the bolts before removing the timing belts. very simple:banana:
  6. adding oil is no big deal. i work at u-haul and some of the old diesels use/leak oil. not going to down the truck and pay to fix it, its just easier and more economical to add a quart or 2 on monday after running the truck into the ground on the weekend personally i myself can tolerate a rate of one quart a week or per fill up, but if its any worse then do some gaskets. front end service is not too bad, i would bet the cam seals only are leaking. if the crank leaks its not as bad, but the cam seals are easy to replace if you have it all apart, motor in car (timing belt job procedure)
  7. if you are getting parts for a subaru best know what to tell them. de4alers and parts stores are incompetent when finding parts, their books and computers and cross-referencing are incompetent as well. ask here first. or, for turbo applications ask for an 88 gl-10, for non turbo ask for 90 loyale. for ea81 stuff ask for an 84 brat. otherwise you get the wrong brake pad, axle, or what not because 2 different generations overlap thge same years and dont let the parts conter tell you any different from what you tell them you are looking for
  8. re seal the current motor. otherwise you would get another motor and have it leak too, being in the same boat once again
  9. check the pcv ststem for clogged lines and such as this can cause the intake to suck oil. make sure the green test connectors on the driver side firewall is disconnected. these are connected when setting the initial timing at the disty, but are unplugged for normal operation
  10. 10 minutes sounds too easy. i would like to introduce you to a thing called RUST on those little 10mm bolts and the molded in brass threadings. the 10 minutes it takes to remove the cover you would be done already. gotta love removing crank pulleys and ac assemblies? i prefer 10 minutes and 2 tools myself (12mm deep and 7/8 sockets, ratchet. makes that 3 tools i guess....) spares in the trunk. i accumulate used or pull-off belts faster than i can break them.
  11. once again i should advocate open belts. go for it. no problems snow, water, mud, gravel. 6 foot reeds, cattails and grass. trips 'cross state and the like. the ONLY reported FAILURE was due to a loose rag under the hood getting wrapped up in the crank pulley. on MY car. so leave the rags in the trunk and you will be ok. i invented open belts. check the timing belt article in the usrm:clap:
  12. if you make it to columbus there are a few junkyards there good for soobs. there is woody's salvage on the north west side but the ol lady behind the desk may be cranky with the prices, but there is always a handfull of ea82 era soobs there there is also the u-pull it on groveport road that has all the cars up on jacks to get in and around them, categorized by make lined up neatly in rows. there is always a few ea82 soobs there and a few 1st and 2nd gen legacies or imprezaas there. there is a perfect spot to chuck parts over the fence as well. get with alleyboy in columbus or 86 subaru in anna ohio. they may be down for a yard run. maybe i could make it myself since i go down to ohio to wrench on these guy's soobs.
  13. right ant proper 2 tone. notice the white comes abover the trim to the hard body line
  14. ea82 TURBO 3spd AT axles are 23 spline with the fat diameter cup that swaps directly with 25 spline.
  15. 2 bolts will hold just fine. may need to change intake gasket earlier than usual. but its not going to stop you from putting it back together and have a running and driving motor. i had 2 motors like this just fine
  16. supposedly the swap works the other way around. 2.2 in place of 2.5, plug and play...
  17. helpless yuppie goes shopping for a car. there are 2 identical cars, same make, model, color, trim package, etc. one car has 80,000 miles and the other has 120,000 miles. which one would you pick? most go for the 80,000 mile car. why? less miles, duh. but lets look at it this way..... suppose this particular car has a 100,000 mile service interval. the 80,000 mile car is due for work whereas the 120,000 mile car has seen the work done. so all in all the 80,000 mile car will get you 20,000 miles out of it, whereas the 120,000 mile car will last you for 80,000 miles. i say this all the time to people shopping for cars and its blows their mind
  18. all went well without a hitch! well, actually the hitch was necessary. hooray for a free lincoln and u-haul! i got some 600 bucks worth of towing package i have yet to pay for. its all on the boss to draw up an invoice, but for the moment he's too busy having me bring our stores hitch sales up:brow: anyway removed 3 cars from wisconsin and brought one back in just over 2 days, more like within 60 hours. stopped in columbus on the way out, and returned there exactly 24 hours later with a trashwagon on the way back. should i get my laptop working again i got some 400+ pictures to put up since the beginning of the rally
  19. all is go. shipping out today. got 600 bucks worth of towing package that i havent paid for yet, so that means i can afford the gas in the lincoln TOW CAR. later..............................................................
  20. well i was talking to my marketing company president at u haul about getting a super deal on hitch parts for the Lincoln Tow'n Car to run after the trashwagon in VA. i would essentially be getting 600 bucks worth of parts and labor for within 300 bucks, put them on my self to save the labor costs, and get paid for putting it on, as part of my training for the hitch pro position at work so far the tally would be a class 3 hitch for 4,000 lbs, 2" drawbar and 2" ball, transmission cooler and the lighting pigtail, and possibly a u-haul towbar
  21. well the 83 i was going to dump off in butler, but if you want it jim i can just as easily bring it your way. i also have a transmission for it, it also needs a front axle. other than that is has a matching set of wagon spoke weels with the center caps, and new exhaust. the motor runs flawlessly. little rust on the edge. give me a call or pm about the price. i also have a 95 legacy i can stand to let go for relatively cheap, something for your wife or even yourself to drive john, call me or pm with eds number, i know he was interested in some sort of subaru but deciding on which one i guess. i relly need to get rid of some cars so i can deliver then for a partial payment (fuel expenses) and take the rest later
  22. well folks, sorry fot the late response, but the car is at a country store rest stop off the side of the higway nearer to roanoke coming from lexington block selar somewhat helped, new plugs did not help at all, although the passenger side's were fouled with oil. i have come to the conclusion that the valve(s) are burnt up on the passenger head strong motor i'll say, it should have blown the head gasket some 9 overheats ago. it basically lost compression during cranking the starter at the last overheat. overheat i mean so hot that oil was boiling over out the pcv hole on the cam tower twice in a row? history repeats? maybe a third time will be a charm. at least im not in jail this time! although i got a picture of myself in the back of the hazzard county sheriff's car at "cooter's" in gatlinbutg, tenn. anyway the plan involves top gear magazines lincoln TOWn CAR that they will be leaving behind and a u-haul hitch installed at my own hand, then a jaunt out east. so, ed in columbus if you want that red 3-door i'll bring it your way. and anyone else along the way i can bring out my 75,000 original mile 83 wagon that is virtually MINT but with a little rust on the edges, should anyone want it, its a 4wd 4spd but needs a tranny my phone is 414-793-7728
  23. the componentes from an 86 will work the same, but the 86 engine harness and disty plugs are shaped different, and this is for 86 spfi only
  24. if you find any 90-94 legacy go for that, as the pre95 were imported from japan and the 95 and later in good ol' INDIANA anyway the 90-94 has been proven the ost rock solid soob thus far. the later 98-00 odels were prone to head gasket recalls
