More motor swap questions..
MilesFox replied to vwbuge's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
you can put a carb motor in the xt, hook up the disty to the coil, and let all the mpfi harness hang loose. tach still works. swap in a carb fuel pump. -
is ea-82 a good engine???
MilesFox replied to spycho_clown's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
dragged the brat out of the carbola, wet grass, reverse, 4500 rpms spinning 4 tires with the diff lock, going nowhere. but it will pull the rpms without whining! -
Removing A/C on '86 GL Wagon
MilesFox replied to Chongo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
chuck the whole ac/alt assy and go find an ea81 alternator mounting bracket. then use the same outboard belt. if you can find a dual pulley alternator then you can run 2 of the same belt for reliability. with the same alt bracket you can also do away with the power steering pump, just use the smaller belt(x2) -
A rare bird in Atlanta...
MilesFox replied to macarose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
turbo models have a 3.700 final gear ratio, which is actually taller than the non turbo models. it is absolutely normal for a subaru to cruise at 3000-3500 rpm at highway speeds. soob motors are happiest between 2500 and 3500 for cruising, and likes to pull 4500 between gear changes if you notice it takes less gas pedal to cruise a given speed at 3000 rpm vs 2000 rpm -
i have seen inboard alternators, but on turbos only from what i have come across. but all the alt/ac bracketry will interchange with any motor, and even on an ea81 for use in an ea82 body

sounds like fun, reverse donuting at 60 mph!, one speed forward. rear wheel steering too? a backwards car would be interesting! call it a forklift and make people believe its diesel

EA82 parts swap into a EA81?
MilesFox replied to spideyz's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
my opinion is take the parts you want, and sell the touring wagon to whoever would want it as a project car. the full time 5spd will fit in the ea81 following the standard 5spd swap procedure. the rear discs will swap. the whole rear trailing arms will swap with gentle modification(read:swaybar) the alternator will fit the same also. the only issue about using the trans will be the 25 spline doj. if the doj will swap onto the ea81 axle, then its a go. if you can cut and weld, you can relocate the ea82 lower control arm mount onto the ea81 crossmember, and use ea82 lowe control arm, and therefore use your ea82 turbo 25 spline axles. you can even use the whole ea82 strut/knuckle/brake if you modify the ea81 strut cap to fit the ea82 strut/spring assy OR, you can simply put the ea81 carb motor into the touring wagon, if you want to keep driving it till you find a motor. my opinion you should invest in tearing the turbo motor down and fixing(most likely the head gaskets) whats wrong with it. did it up and die or go out slowly? maybe it only busted a timing belt.... -
mix in a gallon or 2 of kerosene to a full tank to bump the octane. the kero around here is rated at 110 octane

i like the clutch fan for reliability. but i went without for (horsepower reasons) on my 83 turbo. electric fan was still there. i did some off roading that involved rocker panel deep water(3 in lift). all i can say is if you modify the front end, make sure the wiring harness wont melt on the exhaust cross pipe! anyway that is what killed mine.

the pigz knew i was having a swap meet so they were itching to razz me. i think what initially drew their attention was eveyone squishing coins and misc items on the RR tracks behind the carbola, every 10 min when trains went by. then they saw the donuts. then the CHEIF stops by for a chat. oh well, whats an event in butler with miles fox without the pigz to go with. naturally... once i get my stuff in order i think i will take off to ohio for a week or two and let things settle down without me, get out of the butler scene for a while. i just may end up in wisconsin one of these days, who knows. see you at jim's

ok, the only missing ingrediants is a hatchback itself......... i have an ej22 with 4spd auto 2wd trans, and all the wiring for both. suppose i find myself a hatch(or 474 bucks). this project would use the ej trans with the 25 spline doj, and ea82 turbo axles from a full time or turbo model. but nay? the hatch is an ea81? this project would use the MODIFIED ENGINE CROSSMEMBER from trashwagon 5, which uses ALL ea82 front suspension parts. so this would make the 25 spline ea82 axles work, just like normal ea82 axles have worked in the trashwagon with the dual range and ea82 motor should something like this use the 16 inch 6-lug rim with 205/55, or would a 5-lug swap be more appropriate? anyway, opinions? how would you guys put this together?

just bought new starter and was wondering....
MilesFox replied to 86Xtturbo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
look under the carpet of an xt and find mitsu logos on the electricals. i have seen mitsu stamps on engine belts, i think the xt6 uses a mitsubishi alternator. one example of a nissan part would be the COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR for the ecu -
cause he used an EA82 flywheel/clutch

Aussie Hatch... Now ej22 Converted. (with pics)
MilesFox replied to SuBaRiNo's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
one more Q. how does the adapter bolt to the motor, are they recessed into the adapter itself? do the top bolts thread into the adapter, and do the bottom studs go thru the adapter, or thread into it? -

MilesFox replied to SuBaRiNo's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
so the bottom studs from the motor line to the tranny the same? so that is ok from what i am reading. i made one but i centered everything on the input shaft and offset the studs. i didnt like how it torqued down. i used 3/8 aluminum and i had starter fitment issues. i wouldnt mind building another one for 30 bucks again, this time i know to use 12mm aluminum, and to take advantage of the bottom studs. i found that i needed no flywheel spacer, and the flywheel centers on its own anyway. i slotted the holes with a drill press, and cut my adapter with a JIGSAW i took mine apart, didnt like it, but i see that you did yours pretty much the same, and acheived success. congratulations on a working example! will this be the standard ej conversion? -
i think im gonna have to JUNK the ol trashwagon, it has served me well. at least i got ONE GOOD RUN with it having complete 4wd. the RX needs a motor, let myoss feece have the tranny and diff for the trashwagon 6, and i will use trashwagon 5's parts for a trash 3-door, yeah, a beefed up 3-door i can call an rx finally!

D/R and S/R Tranny Q's
MilesFox replied to [HTi]Johnson's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
there is no dual range auto tranny. a 5spd dual range will swap in with little mods. you will need the driveshaft, clutch/flywheel assy, driveshaft and diff for the swap. you will need the crossmember for an ea81 manual tranny. the shifter hole and tranny tunnel may need massaged a little. right now i have a dual range 5spd and an ea82 in my 83 wagon. but many a person has done the swap, let the questions fly! -
Are these the wrong bearings (85 Brat?)
MilesFox replied to Flakrabbit's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
probably for the 94 model year -
if youre in the market to buy a soob, and off roading is what charmed you, then you should consider looking for a dual range model. but if its scarce, might as well take whats there, any soob is better than no soob, and you could always put whatever soob pieces on whatever subaru. you could put a dual range trans in there if you know how to operate a wrench with no problem

MilesFox replied to Flakrabbit's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
go back and tell them 4WD BRAT. i dont see how they missed that one. what you got was a 2wd rear bearing, and i dont think subaru would have made 2wd brat model. -
here it is "on paper" http://www.warpthree.com/milesfox/subaru/service/glossary.htm

tim the wagon is still in IOWA, contact subiemech85 about its condition, state of repair, as he has both cars. fix the turbo and change the oila nd she's good. "what if trashwagon 5 could be the next 2-door wagon?" if i could find a set of 2-doors then i honestly wouldnt be afraid to do it. the rocker is pretty concave at the b- pillar. lucky for the other side, those are doors i just put on. all the sheetmetal is "transferrable" to another part to be replaced. i dont know. i need to do something with all my stuff before the city of butler kicks me out of butler. tim, you should have been there it would have been good "follow up"! anyway i have court on monday, all of my court was pushed up to june, so i JUST got my "discovery motion" in the mail. i still have to be assigned a public defender to present my case. anyway the from the prosecutor says, plea bargain "could reduce his time from excess of 4 years to a maximum of no more than 15 months" i can't take that seriously

putting EJ22 into the 86 wagon
MilesFox replied to The Scooby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i used a 3/8 aluminum plate, but after my trials i wish i used 1/2 inch, 12mm sounds appropriate. if the bolts will be 12mm wide, then the depth of the metal and threads is just enough. u used the full ea82 clutch and flywheel, the flywheel will fit onto the crank snout and the pilot holes will match. i elongated the holes on the flywheel, then fit it against the ej motor, then started what bolts i coulds, and poked with a dremel the other holes that needed touching. i used the flexplate washer from the automatic as a template. my drill bit had a tendenct to walk, so i had to use a bigger bit to finish. keep in mind from wha tit looked to me is the ej bolt pattern has no offset hole, they are all even, unlike the ea82. but the flywheel the way i did it will bolt to an ej on the outer diameter of the bolt holes and the ea82 on the inner diameter. since the crank snout aligns the bolt's job is just to torque it to the motor the crossmember bolts will align mostly, but you will hgave to slot the holes and or grind away the nugget on the motor mount. i managed to get the ej power steering lines to connect to the ea82 lines on the crossmember itself, i has to loosen the bracketry and tweak them a little. the ecu i cut out of the harness with about 10 inches of wire form the clips, then one by onbe wired up each component, making my harness, then solder, tape. the better schematics you have the better you will know whats' what. there will probably be a lot of dead end wiring that wont go to anything. does this car need to run, or just be put together? i went from a n ea82 trashwagon to a ej22 with full time 5spd and 5 lugs in a week. i got about 2 weeks in the harness. but i tool all mine apart before i got very far with it bewcause i came upon a turbo motor -
help me ID engine & tranny
MilesFox replied to on3letsgo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
what specifically are you trying find with the engine codes? pretty much any subaru uses the same parts between model years, for example an intake gasket for an 73 brat fits a 94 spfi wagon try this for reference: http://www.warpthree.com/milesfox/subaru/service/glossary.htm http://www.warpthree.com/milesfox/subaru/service/service.htm
