make sure the clutch cable is not too tight. the tighter it is, the more like ithe pedal is being pressed in. if it seems impossible to get a proper adjustment, suspect the pressure plate you may as well remove the flywheel to service the rear seal, and then you ccan push out the pilot bearing from behind. if not, the dowel method acts hydraulically. pack some grease into the hole, and when you tap in the dowel, the grease will force the bearing out. i think a 3/8 socket extension would work...

i think that the tracls might swap out. your best bet would be an ea82 seat, gl-10 seat, rx or xt seats!
-
yeah, you will have to pull the axle, and disassemble the inner end. the inner end can be disassembled and cleaned up. the outer end is not serviceavle. but if you clean it up and use new grease, your axles will still last a while use molybendum disulfide grease for the axles, not bearing grease. it may be called moly or moly ep, depending on the brand

No spark. Need ignition amp or... ?
MilesFox replied to DishMan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
in the midst of swapping the ecu and some vutal components on my TURBO, my spark quit. i checked the resistance and it was fine, replaced the disty and still no spark. i replaced the module on the coil bracket and had spark that is what you need, go to the junkyard and get a coil and bracket as a unit, or just the bracket. but if you get the whole thing at a good price, at least you will have a spare coil! i put my money on the module on the bracket.... sounds like you figured it out, just wanted to check and make sure on the board! -
if you were to crack one of the plastic lines, standard 5/8 hose would be a suitable replacement. just run enough length so you dont have kinks in the bends

ea81 to ea82 swap *sticky?*
MilesFox replied to archemitis's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
cool. nice to see other ea82 conversions, mine, tom's, the glf, and yours! lots of collective info on such an EASY mod! -
check the fluid level for the font diff. on automatics there is a separate tube for front diff, uses gear oil i have seen a rear diff that ran out of oil, locked up. but it rolled after it cooled off. check and fill the fluid, check for leaks. if the car rolls now, the diff got hot from lack of oil i highly doublt its axles or bearing.

an ea82 turbo an crosspipe will fit on the ea81 block

Another Goofy Idea--Storage in Spare Tire Area
MilesFox replied to Dante's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
load the heaviest where the back seat would be when down i managed to stuff an entire xt6 suspension, tranny, driveshaft, rear diff, 4 wheels, a spare, and 2 seats. all in the back of the wagon. the tranny was over the seat, the suspension parts over the axle. car was rather balanced anything else would have went on top! -
if wagon and brats are the same platform(yes) remember i have the ea82 suspension in my 83 wagon. it still has the ea81 rear suspension, with ea82 trailing arms a gen1 rear suspension is a while nother ball game. but the front ens mods will be the same(but the crossmember has narrowed to fit, or lift adapter blocks

i would disagree with trading a turbo off. the fact its turbo is good enough reason to hold onto it if you dont mind swapping and taking things apart (that is the fun in a project!) i would say put a 5spd dual range, and chuck the auto that in itself would be a standard mod for an off roader anyway but the turbo will have its higher rpms and boost curve with the lower gears in the tranny i had a dual range in my 83 turbo wagon and it off roaded quite nicely! wheel spin is what will get you thru mud, and the turbo will hold rpms the higer rpm power curve would be better suited for the 5spds gearing. if the motor gives you trouble, i would like to think an 85-68 ea82 turbo moor would work, having similar mpfi but the turbo motor will fit in there for sure!

work has begun on ro-neece (rgaff_77) 78 brat. putting in 81 GLF front suspension. and crossmember the crossmember is TOO WIDE, so we decided to go with a 3 inch lift to adapt the ea81 crossmember to the 78 brat we will get thwt done, and then take off all the rear suspension. we will fabricate lift blocks that will accomodate an EA82 rear suspension. since the brat will have an ea81 crossmember. that will allow the mod for the ea82 lower control arms and struts. now it will have the proper track to acommodate ea82 axles, especially 25 spline axles, and xt6 suspension too. we are using an ea71 with ea82 hitachi and ea81 bellhousing, with (when we get it, its available soon) 4spd dual range. once that is accomplished, we can consider ea82, and with that fit, it will allow a turbo swap. LOTS of potential, it can be all done like that combination using all subaru parts, and just a fabbed lift (or kit if they were manufactured for the conversions [which they are not..unless we make some])

tim, i found some got photos that would be valuable for my tech pages. Your page is also linked to in USMB members links on my links page -
the alt bracket from the ea81 will swap pber. you may need a different belt
-
i had the idea of usint the ea81 rear suspension in the gen1 brat on the front, the ea81 crossmember will bolt up, so wouldnt that mean an ea81 lift will work in the front? and a lift in the rear can adapt the mounts for the suspenion frame, you might be able to use ea81 gas tank the diff bar hanger will bolt up the same as an ea81

my carbureted spfi motor in the 87 turbo wagon does the same thing. i can get on it, but at higher speeds it will dook out aroud3-4000 rpm,and it wouls stall. but sometimes it ran fine, off and on it was a hitachi carb from an ea82 on an spfi block, all stripped down.

that legacy is pimp! 1ABAJA will taking pics of his legacy, hos o3 legacy, and the 93 impreza. the impreza will be getting a clutch and an EJ22 from a legacy. it has 15's on it, and nwr axles. THANX AKIRA i will be using the rust repair in sequence, a few others. -
Wagon -> Hatch tail shaft
MilesFox replied to SuBaRiNo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
what about a 4wd automatic ea82 driveshaft. because its shorter than the 5spds, snd the spd fits in an ea81 wagon(w/ 5spd) so if the autos is shorter, would it be the right length for a hatch( if doing a 5spd swap)? you could also look for 4wd hatch driveshafts -
i would say restore it in the sense of getting it mechanically sond, new seals, axles, turbo brats are kinda rare, only 83 and 84 it has the EA81 motor, the pushrod version of the 1800. later 85 and up have EA82 timing belt motors but since its starting to rust, that make it grounds for a project! make it a good running off roader.

YES pictures would be very useful. i am dping write ups and need pics. take all the pics that you can, i will put them on my website. i have swapped both ea81 and ea82 into ea81 cars, and both with 5spds from 2wd to 4wd, and 2wd auto to 4wd 5spd d/r TrashWagon5 has ea82 front suspension, motor, tranny, and reasr suspension, in an 83 wagon. pictures of the motor out of the car and ea82's going in, this would be a great opportunity take pics of the distributor clearance, take it out to install the motor, you will have to relocate the hill holder, though i used the ea82 flywheel. but we put an ea82 behind an ea81 2wd 5spd, we drilled the holes out of the flywheel to be bigger to use ea82 bolts. the pattern is the same. did it on a drill press. but the 4wd 4spd ea81's pressure plate will fit on the ea82 flywheel, use the 4spd clutch from the transmission get shots of the crossmember from several angles when the motor is out....

Wagon -> Hatch tail shaft
MilesFox replied to SuBaRiNo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i believe the driveshaft will swap, if you use the same transmission you will want 4 inches, i had 6 on mine, had LOTS of room under there for even a spare auxilary fuel tank... i took the lift out, it was home-made -
need help deciding on water pump
MilesFox replied to MaroonDuneDoom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
no matter what motor its on, the pulley with the BOLT-ON pulley is the short one 100mm the ones that have the pulley go over the studs on the water pump itself, it is the long one 110mm:wave: -
jerry's wpuld make you an excellent shifter. but send him the one from the transmission you are using, and your ea81 4wd handle

Crank Case Plug, what's behind it?
MilesFox replied to garner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
weld a nut to the plug, use your favorite size. that will get it off if its stripped out. the plug is steel. behind the plug is the water jacket.
