  1. I ported the heads on my 87 gl-10. the turbo came on a lot stronger at lower rpms. Run a fatter Down-Pipe, if you can have one made, or simply run at least a 2 inch pipe out the rear, with a hi-flo muffler. a turbo is not necessarily that loud without a muffler, and if you run the pipe out tha back or side of the passenger compartment, it wont be loud inside (indiana law requires the exhaust exits past the passenger area) the carb block will get you 8.5 compression vs, turbo 7.7 compression. but the pistons from a carb motor will fit in the turbo block, if you wanted to keep the rods and crank stroke of the turbo engine shaving the heads wont really accomplish much, you dont want to take more than .010" (just to give a clean surface) as it would make the motor too narrow for the intake if you go much more than that. Subaru Junkie i believed shaved his ea81 heads, so ask him abut how much he took off. the pistons or block swap will well than make up for what shaved heads can do you might be able to find lighter valves, but i dont think you can go much bigger at all. the webbing between the valve seats id pretty yhin, and has a tendency to crack between the valves. Now it is common for the valves to crack between the valves, but thatis considered normal, as i believe there is a TSB out about it. But if the head goes bad, it usually drops a valve seat. all the heads i have seen that were too bad to use had the valve seat drop. the crack should be nice and flush with the surrounding metal. worse cracls will "fillet" out, enough to stick a fingernail in. the crack may go down towards the valve seat. thereis no water passage there, i had a crack that went TO the valve stem, and ran , but it dropped a valve seat later.(but this motor had 2 blown head gaskets when i got it) heads will drop a valve seat more than anything, the cracls in the exhaust port are the ones to watch out for. you may find a small 1cm crack by the spark plug hole, but that will be alright. but if you have a known good motor, the heads are nothing to worry about They say Gen 3 heads are the best, off later model turbos if you know thew bottom end is in good shape, it can handle a good 150, good enough for a cost-effective build you can also use xt mpfi spider intakes, in conjunction with impreza intercoolers, or make some kond of hi-flow intake and filter. intake and exhaust alone will free up some hp. you can modify the wastegate or use a boost controller to get more boost, you can go a good 12-13 psi before you have to worry about an intercooler. with the carb block, use a slightly higher octane, and tweak the timing. wjm on the board had turbo on an spfi block 9,5:1 cr, with hi-octane gas. ask his expertise about driveability and reliability of high compression somewhere on the board there is an electrical mod to the MAF to bypass the fuel cut-off
  2. Yo! chill out and calm down. easy now. "Dammit Jim, i'm a Fox, not a Doctor"! Hey, i called you out for your input. looks like you beat me to the post. i didnt expect to have what i said thrown out the tailpipe. I am not wrong, but there are a few things i did not know about for sure. so, ok, i learned something new. so did the guy who posted this topic, and anyone else who is reading this.... not unlike this........ http://usmb.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8000 Of Course I know about these cars. Maybe not all, but hey, i know now from what you said. But what I posted in response is NOT wrong. what is this about digital gauges? i never mantioned that. What i menat as green instruments is the Analog cluster, like in the RX i know of, and an 87 wagon. i had an 86 sedan, with orange, because pre 87 had orange. also, the digital dash does not have an oil pressure gauge, which the RX has the analog cluster for that gauge. The digital dash in my 87 gl-10 is Green. the one on a 85 Turbo wagon i had was orange. i did not dismiss it as an RX, and for sure not on the account that it wasnt a 3-door. i asked if it was a 3-door or a sedan because there was no picture of it! so the ON DEMAND 4wd 5spd is the pushbutton, right? and i quote myself: I'm sorry if i were to post first. at least there was good dialogue and a lot got said. i'm sure he was happy with his quick and informative response. read his replies. Corky, i called on you to add some of your Expertise, baut all you got out is the fact that they werent white in 86. That was shown by Warp3. The board speaks for itself........................................... The Single Range had a 3.700 gear. LSD may have been an option for 86, but that i dont know of. I'm sure Corky can tell us, so lets hear it, Dr.RX:D
  3. try asking in the New Generation of Subarus forum, as it covers legacy an impreza, which have different transmissions than the older soobs
  4. i got wheels to move it out. i bet if i bring a battery an a timing belt, i can drive it out. but i wont let him knowit runs until he accepts the offer and signs the titele, it would be funny to see his look if i just start it up and drive away!
  5. from what i remember, its all there, but thewheels are off. its red with gray interior, interior isnt mint, but its not torn up, its still all there. i dont recall seeing any rust, but i was only there long enough to get in and open the hood. its probably in the same shape as your turbo wagon for sale, i will have to look at it again all of the motor is there, SPFI
  6. are you sure its an RX? rx's were white with gray bumpers and side molding, and has the letters "RX Full-Time 4WD" on the side. they made black ones in late 89, a special edition.. but you DO have the 4wd hi-lo? does it have the center console like the pic i posted? if you look under the rear of the car, you will see the rear diff. there should be a plaque there(if its not there it fell off) that will say LSD if it is limited slip, and have the 3.700 gear ratio but if its a part time 5spd dual range, it will have a 3.900 gear. also, if its a part time unit, the 4wd will lite up in green, the lo in yellow, and it wont have the pic of the 4wd already there like the pic i posted here is an 87 RX 3-door http://usmb.net/gallery/albun92/Oct11_39 and agian with body molding http://usmb.net/gallery/albun92/RXDoorsOpen the molding onthis car has been painted black 5spd dual range part time did not come as stndard for turbos. yours may be a special order though. i have not seen an example of a turbo with a 5spd dual range. does yourt shifter hava 4wd button on the shifter knob itself? if so, its single range, which DID come with turbo, like my gl-10 wagon has put up the VIN and someone here can tell you if the car is original, with its original features also, being an 86, it should have height adjustable front struts..
  7. if you, go get a Haynes Manual Subaru 1600 & 18oo, it has comprehensive wiring schematics
  8. yes, the hazard on 87+ is where the lights are, the lights are on the turn signal on 87. the fan is where the wiper is on 87, and the 87 wiper is on the right steering column. the 87 has a blox-off plate where the 86 fan was. you say the 4wd light kicks on, do you mean the diff lock? what does your shifter/4wd lever look like. the middle of the dash will show a pic of a drivetrain that says 4wd, then a LO light will come on when the lever is moved up, and a DIFF LOCK will come on with the diff lock switch diff lock switch http://usmb.net/gallery/albun92/Oct11_47 the atatchment is the LO and DIFF LOCK lights
  9. i would rather rig up a coat hanger than leave mine up on jack-stands, thats for sure.(until its fixed for real)
  10. looks glazed. maybe a sanding disc will clean it up, if it werent so grooved. i always sand down my clutch bits when re-using them...
  11. i offered 200 for the black one. i will see what they will take for the red one, i will tell them i want to take a look at it and inspect the timing belts before i make my offer they said they have titles to the cars, also. titling is not so much a hassle in MI as it is in OH, tom can tell you about how MI does their titles josh has called, i stopped in and said i know people who want these things, so i am going to pretty much like"take my offer, as we are the ONLY ones who need these or parts, or sit on them and make NO money"
  12. you are right about the knock control, 87 octane is fine. the motor has 7.7 compression ratio, and 115 hp. there is a guy who built a turbo uo with 9,5 compression,(WJM) and it was fine for the most part with 93 octane. you can crank the boost a fwe psi to get a little moe power, stock boost is something like 9-11 psi if you are performance oriented, the right mix and match of parts will let youuse later model parts, such as xt6 hubs will let you use 5-lug wheels, axles, and struts from legacy/impreza having the spider intake from a non turbo mpfi XT will lwt you use impreza intercooler and intake pieces there is a lot of potential with teh RX, its pretty much the 80's equivalent to wht the WRX is today.
  13. the clutch cable is adjustable, if you tighten it, it will disengage sooner when you press the bedal, and engage higher up off the floor. i like my clutch to where i can keep my heel on the floor, and not have to hover my leg(i'm 6'2") the hill holder is connected to the clutch fork, and acts as a clutc pedal return spring. it is also adjustable sounds like all the service that has been done is good to go. you can rev it up to a healthy 5500 rpms all day long, its best not to "lug" the engine, its most efficient rpm range is between 2500 and 45oo rpm, so dont be afraid to wind it up to the next gear. the hi-lo can be shifted on the fly, its designed so that you can pop it into lo to accelerate out of a turn, etc. there is no speed limit on the lo-range, my buddy drives 75 with his in lo, its only a 500 rpm difference in 5th gear. the diff lock should never be used on dry pavement, as it locks inthe 4wd like a part time unit. the lsd can be prone to push the car into understeer, but if you knw how to drive it, the lsd will be ti your advantage in performance driving. how are the axles? check for torn boots. if a torn boot is caught right away, you can have the boot replaced and save your axle. the inner end of the axles will hold up way longer than the outer ends with torn boots the axles can be serviced yourself if you d the right procedure. welcome to SUBARU!
  14. being an 86, it will have a vane type MAF, and a mechanical distributor with stand-alone knock control unit. the 87 and up used a crank angle sensor optical distributor, and a hot-wire MAF. also, 86 has orange instrument display, 87+has green the fan switch, wiper control, and hazard are in different locations than 87+ is it a sedan or a 3-door?
  15. sounds like someone else i know of. is this going to turn into one of THOSE threads? i have seen a lot of what you mention lately would anyone get mad if we said it can be rigged up with a piece of coat hanger, bypassing the electrical altogether? its all a mechanical function on the working end. dont let the new guys get a bad impression of the board. this board is really the only place thats worth a shiz for good specific information.
  16. well, you have found the beast and most comprehensive collective subaru information on the internet! the RX has the Full-Time Dual Range transmission with a 3.7 final gear. it also has stiffer spring rates than standard models, limited-slip rear differential, and center diff lock. it also has RX exclusive body molding and interior. the turbo engine is the same as other turbo models, and all of the body parts, interior, and driveline components are interchangeable with other models. what is a common thing to take care of is the timing belts. subaru recommends that they are changed every 60,000 miles. check with the previous owner to see when that was done last. turbos will tend to blow head gaskets if they get hot, so make sure the cooling system is in good working order. while the timing belts are serviced, you can do the water pump and oil pump while its apart. t-belts can be done yourself without too much trouble, with a handful of tools. the motor is not near as complicated as it looks, and everything is easy to get to(following the right procedure) the rx is a coveted ride, so nice score for your first soob!
  17. yeah, it will have a braided wire like that of coaxial cable.
  18. ok. i know that 1361 is both, the 2 in front i thought was gold. my bad silver isnt too bad a choice, better than wal-mart brands for sure
  19. hey, the RX link is showing the TrashWagon..
  20. i almost drove into a parked buick when i delivered in fort wayne. it helps to know the area you deliver in!
  21. what yearis your schematic for? the 87 uses the crank angle optical disty, wheras 85-86 uses a mechanical tyoe with stand-alone knock control unit. the shielded wire has a gray sheath, i think the middle wire id red? what does the distributor look like?
  22. 5spd or automatic? the 5spd 4wd is vac operated, which the valve is electrical. check for any shorted wires in teh center console. there are connectors under the spare tire above the trans, check for bare wire there...
