  1. try the new battery first. the fact you got something after removing the dead one should give you hope. the old battery may have been internally shorted, causing no power at all, but no battery is not enough juice, so therefore, a new battery should work.
  2. I would have let them ride myself. The factory originals are far better than any cheapo replacements.
  3. I had a set of cooper snow tires for my 88 dl on 14" Peugeots. I would recommend a 195/60 size as it will be very close to the diameter of a 185/70 13 and only throws the speedo off by 8%
  4. use the distributor from the old engine. For 87 with spfi, the disty is the same as later models, but the plug is different. the pigtail wire on the disty is removable and swappable. the 87 has a round style connector and is 87 specific, but can be found on 86 gl-10 with spfi. Think of the 87 harness as an 88 design with 86 style connectors. the 87 harness is a one year design. you can probably clip the plug and splice them, but i would recommend swapping the pigtail or just using an 87 disty.
  5. you might have to bleed the MC if the reservoir went dry. you will have to remove the brake lines and plug the hole with your finger to get it going. Try depressing the clutch when bleeding the rear brakes.
  6. I will have access to the shop next weekend saturday or sunday if you want to grab that trans.
  7. Def. a weekend job. the HG can be done in a weekend easily. Bring beer for sure. getting apart is easy, but installing the cam towers is the most frustrating part. from there it is cake. use ultra grey or anaerobic sealant for the cam tower, never RTV
  8. cool. i didn't think of that. I will let you know when i make it to the shop.
  9. if the spark plugs were still in it go for it, but if not, have suspicions. put marvels oil in the cylinders and let it soak in overnite. take advantage of its condition to haggle the price down for a most likely good engine.
  10. i could work with that. see if you can do 125 and we got a deal. I'll trade for handyman labor if you can help me work on my house. do you sand hardwood floors? i want to scrub and acid wash the basement floor for epoxy or floor paint. we need to re-engineer the kitchen if you know anything about cabinets. watever's clever
  11. i had a for sale post and it should still be there if you search it. offer whatever you think its worth to use. maybe you can trade some non soob items, perhaps. the trans is still at the shop by the xt motor. i should call desmond and see about going there. i still have a key to the building.
  12. This comment only applies to engines later than the ej22e In regards to the lifter tick and oil leaks, it's a "you might as well do the cam tower o-rings while you're at it" kind of thing. make sure to get real cam tower o-rings. If you go this far you can follow the head re-torque sequence. remove the motor mount nuts and pitch bar to jack up the engine a few inches to get the cam towers easier. remove the disty to make it easier. you can raise the engine a few inches without dropping the exhaust header. take out the battery and air box for more clearance
  13. i do not have an ea82 header, sorry. we should coordinate a day for the shop since i need to rescue shelves and toolboxes yet. it is on the pallet with the xt6 motor. that trans has some history!
  14. intake gasket is a possibility. remove spark plugs and look for shiny pistons to to prove coolant in the combustion. the comment above about cracks between the valves was meant to say about cracks in the exhaust ports thru to the coolant jacket. cracks between the vals is a common and noraml occurrence. if you have leaks suspect the o-ring on the water pump pipe to the rad hose. the liquid glass sodium silicate type block sealers can help with cracked heads as a temporary or permanent fix. smell your radiator for exhaust
  15. just remember that i have a whole d/r laying around taking up space....
  16. Sawp it out with the spfi and 4wd. do it up with rx skirts. Make the car nice. Off road capable, just don't scratch and dent it.
  17. you can do this as a proven method. there could be a voltage spike by electrical theory, and theoretically cause a voltage spike. The battery acts as a ballast for the alternator's output and loads on the system. Do the negative battery thing. if the car stalls then how can there be a voltage spike? If the car does not stall just shut it down or reconnect the battery right away. to reduce this risk turn off all lights and heater, etc. you are probably more likely to get a volt spike while re-connecting the battery. maybe just turn the car off. hwever, if the car remains running, the alternator could still have an intermittent charging pattern, so further troubleshooting is recommended
  18. The flywheel only fits on one way. you will see that one of the holes on the flywheel are spaced differently. it can only go back on in the same direction to the crank as it ever would. as far as the the bearing, i wonder if it was for another application that used the same clutch on a different make with a different flywheel with a smaller hole but the same trans spline. It is an interesting little bearing and i would keep it as a novelty maybe if you go for a black underhood go for a flat or satin to not outshine the motor and flatter sheens hide imperfections(rusty texture) better than glossy. For all that work you got going on you could easily stuff a dual range in as you go back together. but then you would need another clutch. so this dude that liz knows randomly saw your car and sent a picture not knowing that we know that car.
  19. ummy nummy clutch and moist motoor there, son:Flame: what are you doing with the flywheel? It looks more glazed than gouged. a rotary drill sander with 60 grit may do the job.
  20. you can use wd40 to re moisten the dry plastics. then treat with silicone spray. treat once a week until the color begins to stay. the color comes back until whatever you put on it evaporates. use an interior product that has uv protection. avoid armor-alls and stick with something silicone based.
  21. the mechanic wants it for scrap value so he can wash the engine and sell it for book value. if anything, have the engine power washed. avoid spraying directly onto seals and gaskets with the high pressure. give that much a chance, at least. subarus will leak some sort of oil; fact of life.
  22. don't forget about the pitch stopper bar as there is a rubber bushing there as well.
  23. my 86 3door did this. it should be normal function
