question about clutch replacement
MilesFox replied to Craigsti's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Exedy is an recommended brand if you can find it for a good price. There are aisin and atsigi brands as well. One of these is oem but i can't remember which one. -
Just got a '96 Legacy. I love this place
MilesFox replied to tehP's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
I lived in Madison, but i only lived in Wisconsin since 2005. What other Subarus have you had before? You got 11 posts in 10 days. The message bord is very real time with response and posts that is stays active. -
My experience with triple gauge combos or just temp and oil, one of the leftover fittings from the temp kit will reduce the oil fitting to one of the plugs on the oil pump. Depending on your sending unit, (small, large) they use one or the other of the 2 holes on the oil pump. Use the small hole with the allen plug. You are threading an npt thread in to a metric thread, but a little teflon tape and threading by hand (about 1.5 turns till she feels tighter). The fitting will tap itself. Just be sure to do it on one operation and avoid backing it out. I am not sure if there is a metric to npt adapter. I suppose you could use a hardline and make an adapter remote for mthe oil pump (like a metric fuel line)

About as hard as replacing it with a used unit. The trouble will be finding a belt the right size. You can literally replace it with a 20 dollar used part and a few tools. If you think you have to spend $$$ for dealer/mechanic/new parts, just let it die a peaceful death. But, there is no sense in ignoring it because SUBARU IS EASY TO FIX compared to other makes and models.

So I found a curb in a snowbank...
MilesFox replied to Ogrekhan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I gots one. I have to go pull it first. I will hollar once i procure it. All the ea82 radius rods are the same, with the exception of xt6, which is thicker, but still fits the same. -
I saw that caddy.

It definitely is an improvement to drve vs a rust gl wagon. The steering is a little weird, but nothing a steering rack wont fix, which i have one to use. I suppose i should ask what switched so what, as they are either not doing anything, or turning on things that dont see from inside the car. she smells a little of ATF, but there are 2 bottles in the back seat, and the trans that was there. I junked the trans with some copper pipes and scraps that i had, just so it didnt ruin the tailgate or windows. I did take it around the neighborhood in the snow last night when i moved it to park it. The brakes are definitely more solid than the 94 legacy. I tried to convince liz to use it at jimmy john's today. The headlights seem to aim a little high, as far as lighting up road signs blocks ahead. Do the HID's supercede the original halogen bulbs? I wonder if i could modify the headlights to acommodate both the HID bulbs, and regular bulbs for lo beam, and wire them accordingly to function as hi-lo. I keep finding more goodies all over the car that i didnt know came with it. I see where you once had a CB, but i got one to replace it with. I have been removing the stereo faceplate to prevent broken windows. I was afraid someone would break into the car to steal the trans for junk.

Check for a bent rear trailing arm as this will throw off the steering. -
Help with 84/88 turbo fuel or timing problem
MilesFox replied to Zem's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The timing marks are different on an ea82 flywheel than the ea81, since the ea82 has the disty driven from the cam, whereas the ea81 has the disty driven by the crank/cam gear firing order will be the same for either example. The reason for the higher initial timing is that is its advance range, but the knock sensor manually retards the timing to below 25 when needed. I am more familiar with the ea82, although i had an ea81t with a 5spd swap millions of years ago. You will want to know if you ahve the ea81 flywheel or the ea82 flywheel(which would be original to the trans). the III marks for the 'timing belt' alignment between both ea81 and ea82 flywheels is in the same location. This represents all 4 pistons are at the center of their stroke at the same time. From this mark, rotate to get #1 TDC and go from there. #1 is the passenger side front cylinder. Firing is 1-3-2-4 with counterclockwise rotation. Crank pulles are not used for timing marks, but rather, the flywheel. If you think you might find the o deg position, mark it on the flywheel as a reference. Someone with more experience with this engine -

MilesFox replied to Zem's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Does it have a manual trans swap? if it's a 5spd, it will probably have an ea82 flywheel, which the ign timing marks are 30 degrees different. You will have to go by counting rotations and finding #1 TDC by hand. The initial timing should be set to 25 deg BTDC Cylinder 3 tends to run hottest or leanest by design of the heads. -
I have parked parallel with trailers and tow dollies. I can park a 26ft u-haul the same. I park my motorcycle downtown perpendicular to the meter, and i am not subject to pay for the meter because it leaves the spot for the meter open. I have gotten away with it each time. the scooter i can park on the sidewalk same as any bicycle. I park in snow mounds left in mall type parking, spots where people are too afraid to park where it would be an open spot if the snow pile was not there. I have parked my truck in a loading dock after hours for fine dining down town. Having owned a u-haul, i could get away in a few places that would otherwise be no parking. At the end of the month you will find a u-haul on about every block (college rental flats in my neighborhood)

I would still do the janitor wrk. I applied with a private business, but the lady hasn't called me back yet. I am qualified for a supervisory position, so instead of pushing a vacuum, for 8 bucks, i can run a crew for 10+. I have 5-6 years experience in pro cleaning. I do have 3 tickets on my driving record which has put the squash on all the jobs i could have been hired for so far. But at least 2 of them went away and made my insurance 33% cheaper, but this leaves 3 standing tickets. I was one ticket away from a 5 year license suspension. But, in the end, i have no dui's, no felonies, no thefts, and my misdemeanors from indiana are too long ago to matter, if they even show up in a report at all. I did get a weed offense in 2006 in shorewood, but i dont know if that counts as a misdemeanor or not; I paid a $350 fine and it was done. Or if it goes away after 3 years of so. I dont have as much experience with WI judicial system as well as indiana (because i stay out of trouble these days)

yes, use the ea82 intake on the ea81 block. The ports match, but some clearance mods will have to be made
-
well, we can trade, and then i can ship it, i suppose. Maybe i will try it out on the 3door. I like it and i dont. I like the shape, but i dont like that it is flush with the headlights. If it stuck out like a regular bumper, i would like it a lot better. Right now i have all day to sit on a cumputer and answer emails, and going to the post office is my excuse to get out of the house for once. I have sent out several packages this week and have transacted hudreds of dollars around that. So this is keeping me productive for the moment.

more like a job is a job. I am having a hard time finding work myself. And with self employment, sometimes there is just not enough work to live off by itself. IT takes as much time and resources to sell your services as it does to perform the services. It's nice you can go back to a job you quit because your skillset is in demand still.

I suppose WI would be the oldschool concentration in the midwest, along with the desmoines iowa and duluth MN crowd. in the PNW anyone has old subarus, but here, only the die-hard have them. This is due to us actively seeking these cars, whereas anywhere else, people have them incidentally the same as other makes because they are cheap. It's nice to have local folk within local distance. When i was in indiana, either I was and my immediate friends were the subaru scene, or i sould have to travel out of state for subaru functions/meeting/parts. It takes a little more effort for us, for one, trying to find them, 2, finding rust free ones, and 3 actually wanting one. In the midwest, the only peole who have old subarus are the ones who are aware of them. I would say that 80% of midwesterners are not aware of 80's subarus, and are only familiar with crocodile dundee's impression of outback wagons. People commonly thing subarus are an australian car.

Dan is working for glass again. I suppose you can ask him. He called me today about that steering rack as he had a glass appointment a few blocks from me.

Have at it. the interior was compromised from hauling engines, there is no rear carpet, and the rocker trim that secures the carpet is missing on the driver side. This is a $300 car either way with the rear window being broken out. If you want it, come for it this week before it sells. You can still take my 86 bumper if you need it right away. Perhaps i can go with you to get this car and help drive. I have always wanted to see minnesota and meet chux in person. I suppose i should ask him if he needs any of my ea82 inventory (rx skirts, xt6 parts)
-
Go ahead and use it. I would only be sitting on it as inventory. Does anyone need an 85/86 front bumper?
-
Front diff is easy. pull the drain plug, and then refill. For an a/t it should be about just more than a quart for the front. Same for the rear, but remove the bottom plug to drain, and the top plug to fill Get 2 bottles of gear oil. Do the rear first. You can squeeze out about half of the first bottle to get it in there. Then squeeze out half the 2nd bottle. Then combine the contents of both bottles to one bottle and use that to fill the front. Let the oil settle in the front as it will stick to the side of the fill tube and be all over the dip stick. Let it sit 5 minutes or so for a more accurate reading.

I believe it is set into a rubber gasket. Same should be true for the side windows. At least so on the pre-loyale GL's

You want the brown headliner from the 85 gl wagon? Does the gl-10 have a sunroof? it is brown, though. Maybe swap around and have a 2 tone interior and pretend it is rich walnut. How is the original battery? If you get an optima, i will be interested in the leftover battery, as my spare got stolen out of my garage. MY 3-door is without battery at this moment.

Head bolts. Any thread sealer r locker
MilesFox replied to mickytrus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My methods never failed me, but i once serviced an ea82 with bad HG's. I found the gaskets were spashed and distorted on the fire ring from over/uneven torquing. This was on the worst ea82 i had ever seen with backwards heads and parts missing form the oil pump and a rod knock.
