  1. most cars these days have the LATCH system, and modern child seats are designed to this standard. I am not sure what year they were mandated for manufacturer install. I havent loaded 3 childeren in the back of my 94 legacy, but we can fit 4 adults int he car along with one child seat without too much of a cramp. the legacy has more width room than the 98 forester the in-laws have. But we can fit in there without too much of a cramp the same. I would imagine the middle child seat would be the one most difficult to load in and out of. Put the youngest one in the middle and buckle/unbuckle him from between the front seats, i suppose. Tell subaru to bring back the 'way-back' seats in place of the smuggler's trunk, and put the spare tire back under the hood.
  2. I recommend against placing the jack stands on the pinch weld, as if the car has any amount of rust, it will distort or cave in. If you decide to run the car on the stands, have someone in the car. It may be hard to hear any noises over the engine and driveline running. I like the suggestions of feeling/listening through the spring with the wheels off and the brake calipers swung out of the way (which can be done without having to bleed or move the piston, as long as you don't hit the pedal while the caliper is off.
  3. ^^^ I was gonna say that doing the HG is not a bad idea, but puling the engine would be the excuse to do them. That and you can get to the baffle plate on the back, and have a chance to scrub down the engine crossmember and frame while it's out. If you know what you are doing, you can dismount the ps pump and the ac compressor and swing them out of the way. less mess, and no compromise to the ac, or epa violations. Be aware that after servicing hte water pump or opening the cooling system, and especially doing the head gaskets (dry block) that it will be particular on how you re-fill the cooling system in regards to burping out any air pockets. It is recommended that you fill the block by the upper hose first before filling the radiator.
  4. If you have following my secretmobile thread, we are discussing silver as an investment. an ounce of silver today at 35 bucks should be worth 100 compared to the historic ratio to gold. That is what i would do with it myself with that amount of $$$ at once. The rule suggests to invest 10 percent. go buy an ounce within 40 bucks A lift would probably be the cheapest to start with, and the tires would be the most expensive (compared to a $300 ej donor car.
  5. according to this guy the average customer wastes 4.5 hours of his time in a year exchanging with pennies. I just spent 2 weeks wasting my time sorting through about $125 in pennies. Of that, i have about $3o in face value of the old copper penies. I got a guy on craigslist offering 1.25xface for them, which comes out to be about $32.50, which is right around the price for one ounce of silver. So considering someone would buy my pennies for more than what it cost me, i am turning 25 bucks into an ounce of silver, or getting silver for 10 less, however you look at it. my ounce of silver today could be worth 100 bucks in the future. Not a bad use for pennies. Althought ebank got annoyed when i asked for $100 in pennies. They limited me to $25. I ended up opening up a bank account at another institutun because i waked in asking for pennies. But i opened the account to use the 'virtual wallet' program anyway. I just picked up 10 silver dimes for 25 bucks. I got a guy on craigslist offering me 50 bucks for about $1.50 in wheat pennies. People are selling us pennies on ebay to canada for 2x face value, beacaue the canadians can melt them down and make a dollar off buying 1 dollar face for 2 dollar, melting them down for 3 dollars per dollar face value. do some youtube searches for 'cent hoarding' to get the idea. I am all of a sudden coin collecting because of this idea when i found the video after searching junk and storage wars. Then i got the idea to hoard silver. maybe i am ludicrous. My one buddy thinks it's an odd idea s sorting coins is time consuming. we'll see. Rent is due and i might just cash in on most of it after picking out the collectible coins.
  6. how many wads of 5's and 20's would you have to throw at someone to pay for things. When i work at jimmy john's, EVERYONE is buying a $4.51 sandwich with either 20's or bank /credit cards. if silver were used as money these days, a 1964 us quarter would buy you 5 bucks. but what would you get as change? today's nickels are worth 6 cents and pennies are worth 3 cents (pre 82) they say if the economy or dollar collapses, you will want to have some of these old silver coins in your possession for barter.
  7. So far no work on the car. I am waiting for the spring to come and thaw my operations. I have not had any trouble with bums and crackheads since there is nothing left for them to steal. I did go junk my snowblower and a full dumpster of aluminum cans. I got 34 dollars for it at the scrapyard. I took that money to the coin dealer and bought an ounce of silver. Then i bought 3 more since i had some cash out of 2 gold watches at the jeweler. I almost broke even at the coin delar trading in some junk jewelry, so i got 3 oz with 5 bucks thrown in to even it up. Now i am sitting on 4 ozt of silver bullion, one 1922 peace dollar (90%), and 4 silver dimes. This makes my holdings worth $128 in bullion, $25 for the peace dollar, and $9.25 for the dimes. This makes me feel rich. Silver historically has a 16:1 ratio to gold. Right now it is about 40:1 (the demand for silver is outpacing the above-ground supply) and is undervalued by manipulation. At $32 per oz, silver SHOULD be worth about $120 compared to gold. MAybe i am buying the hype, but i am on a mission to accumulate as much silver as i can while it remains under $35 per oz. I feel like posting all my things for sale with a price in oz of silver or the equivalent dollar amount based on so many ounces. Buy silver now to protect your dollars from inflation.
  8. I have an xt6 mc and booster in my 86 3door (yes it is xt6 5 lug with the option of moving to 2 pot calipers) Since i used an xt6 booster, the rod on the back side was too long, and i had to shorten it (the xt has a deeper pedal box and more distance from the firewall to the trans shifter) The legacy booster was the same diameter a the xt6's, but deeper and more protruding. The car sems to stop well, although the rear wheel bearing is shot and the rotor is dragging (i am not actively driving this car)
  9. I found that holding the clutch pedal down while bleeding the brakes makes it much better.
  10. marina blue would be the lighter metallic sky color my 87 xt has. i have seen several 1986 gl-10 with the dark bluue, which lookks very similar to my 94 legacy which is blue pearl mica. the paint code should be just next to the hood latch on the radiator support.
  11. Replace the water pump as it will begin to fail by 200,000 mi and compromise the belt.
  12. Even beyond the silver content, there is numismatic value in certain coins as well. 2009 coins were halted in the mint process, and therefore the mintage is low, and hasnt been that low since 1951. Some of the state quarters for 200 9 are rare, such as the territories puerto rico, for example. Michigan and Florida are the rarer of the state coins. I have a good run of wheat pennies, with the oldest being 1917. So far this week i have looked throug about $250 in quarters, 150 in nickels, about $100 in pennies, and a good $150 in dimes. Most of it gets changed out at the bank. I'm not sure how long i will keep it up, but my goals are to collect a whole roll of each example of coin. By doing so i would have almost $2000 in coin by the time the collection reaches that level.
  13. look for 85-89 subaru GL non-turbo for a trans you will most likely find them in 85-88
  14. I have 3 cats. Not fond of them. I would be ok with 2 The old lady insists on having cats. I hate cat fur being ingrained into everything. Our house is not big enough for a dog inside. i dont like little dogs because they are yappy and are bred to go in rabbit holes and viciously kill them (ankle biting reflex) Pit bulls i am not fan of, because they are bred to b e aggressive. Gemrman shepards, however, are bred to obey. That i can go for. Now if i could only trian the local crack heads, wouldnt have these problems. So i have the car put away and have resorted to coin colecting for the moment. But all i need is some crack head to break into my house and rip off 200 bucks in quarters and nickels. I did find 2 silver dimes and one silver war nickel. And i started a 50 state quarter collection. ...This to distract me from subarus for a little bit...
  15. It is mostly bolt on. use the 5spd and its 2 piece driveshaft. this bolts up to the 4spd's original trans mount, and fits the bellhousing. you will have to use the 5spds clutch and flywheel, and grind out the engine bellhousing on the bottom about 1/4 inch to clear the starter teeth. the console wont match, bu there are kits to use the 4spd 4wd lever with the 5spd trans. search will show you some examples.
  16. i dont know about the price anymore, but i used to go to any autozone or even meijer to buy a thrush brand glasspack for about 20 bucks. 5-10 years ago. I donn't know, but the same muffler is probably 40 dollars in today's money. copper pennies are worth 3 cents if that tells you anything about what a dollar is worth.
  17. This car keeps popping up as spotted. First, someone pointed it to me from a craigslist ad. Then, one of my buddies in milwaukee saw this car randomly in person and took a pic when visiting out west. I believe it was for sale for about 3500 bucks at one time.
  18. make sure the green test connectors are not plugged in, as this will hold the timing static and there will be no advance curve.
  19. as stated, pavement is not recommended, unless its 70 mph in heavy rain with hydroplaning, and you disengage before getting off the highway.
  20. If your car has air struts, it has its own height control. If it were conentional coil struts, they are adjustable for 1985 and 1986. these swap in. you can swap in the rear coilovers from a FWD as they are a little longer since their mounting point is lower, and this will bump up the rear quite a bit.
  21. Getting pulled over in Indiana is inevetable:rolleyes: The law there states as long as the exhaust does not belch obnoxious smoke, and exits beyond the passenger compartment. I would run the end of it out past the bumper a little bit. It would be the officer's discretion whether or not it violates local noise ordinance. My favorite thing to do is mount the cherry bomb just after the y pipe where the resonator is, and use the leftover section of pipe cut out to replace the muffler and use as a straight pipe. a WRX muffler would be interesting, and probably look nice and less ghetto (or red-neck) as far as the constabulary is concerned. The wrx flange goes under the axle, wher the xt flange goes over the axle. cut the muffler close and coupe the pipe on the car to it. The exhaust hangers at the rear have a chance of lining up the same.
  22. drive backwards in circles to free it up. If you can reember your maneuver after you engage the 4wd, you can litterally reverse your course to unwind it. You might have to goose the clutch or throw the car around and make it drift a little to lose the bind. If the tires are in question, mount them diagonal to their current locations. 4wd can be used on snow, sand, grass, gravel. In rain, on highway at highway speeds is ok, but around town not so much. so what would be the ratio for this jdm trans?
