  1. Dont forget to donate to the USMB for the New Year, I did .. I was away for a while but now Im back, Just as a lost sheep LOL ... Baaaaaaa .. I think Paul is the Shepherd of the flock LOL Joe
  2. WOW, Thanks to all of you for taking the time to answer my thread. Im sure one day I will be forced into the AWD world so to speak. I do like the Outback H6 in a automatic ... But then LOL I will have a new thread of pros and cons to post .. " H6 vs. subarus 4cyl TURBO engine" which is more reliable and which one can take a real pounding without constant repair ... Joe
  3. I guess Im afraid of change LOL ... I was so use to my old dual range. If I was in a parking space with really deep snow I never had to shovel out... JUST DRIVE on out of it ... There is a street that is paved but so steep that the plow trucks never ever plow. Jeeps get stuck trying to make it up the hill. The kids sleigh ride on it, well one day I was at the bottom and asked the kids if they thought I would make it up, They yelled NO WAY, jeeps, SUV's always get stuck .. Well guess what that old dual range went up it NO PROBLEM. The car started to climb at a 45 but still went up it .. So Im wondering would a AWD make the same hill ...
  4. What do you mean locked up ???? It sounds like the dual range is better, I wonder why subaru didnt stick with the dual range ..
  5. I need some feedback on AWD vs. the old Dual Range 4wd . I have only ever owned a dual range subie never a AWD. I only drive on stone driveway and paved roads. No lift kits or anything like that ... Just want some feedback from someome that has driven both in deep snow and ice. Which one is better ? Which one is better for getting unstuck from deep snow ? Just trying to decide if I should upgrade to AWD... Thanks ...
  6. Strictly On road driving, no lift kit or anything .... Just simple big storm deep snow driving. When the plow truck blocks the car in on the street ...
  7. Any opinion of which is a better performer in snow and Ice, which one works better for getting unstuck in deep snow ??? Which one provides better traction ????
  8. Does anyone have past driver experience with the dual range subaru trans and subaru's ALL WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM ? What are the pros and cons of each while driving in snow and ice ??? I have never owned a ALL WHEEL DRIVE SUBIE... So Dual Range or ALL WHEEL IN SNOW AND ICE, which is better for deep snow and getting unstuck, which provides better traction ?
  9. Well I know it is a manual trans. so it must be dual range as you said. I guess the only question is WILL a EA81 dual range manual trans fit into/ work without any modification onto a EA82 motor ? I still wonder which is better the old dual range trans or the current automatic trans ALL WHEEL DRIVE in the snow ? Any opinions ????
  10. can anyone advise me if a 1988 subaru wagon was a fuel injected model ? I think the 86 version still has a carb but cant recall. Also does the 1988 wagon still have the dual range trans ? And SHOULD I assume the dual range trans for a EA82 engine is the exact same trans used in the older EA81 engine ? Thanks for answering both questions ... Joe
  11. I always wanted to take a brat.... cut the thing in half just past the drivers door.. Then take my wagon cut the thing in two halfs.. first cut between the front and rear door... then cut the end off just past the rear door.. End up making a 4 door brat just like the baja...
  12. Should I buy a cheap torque Wrench to tighten the axle nut??? And how many ft/lbs should it be??? I know in my last post it was mention 150 around, is this ok.. And Thanks Again ALL.....
  13. Is it true that when I put the axle nut back on it should not be real tight?? Just snug.. someone told me that
  14. Wow you guys are fast.. As Im typin away you guys are one step ahead of my thought process... and already have the answers posted before I ask them... COOOOL How much to tell me the Power Ball Numbers for Sat... Thanks for the info and again any other tips would be great as I have not done subie brakes yet... Joe
  15. Instead of opening the bleeder can I just open the Master Cyl. up where ya dump the brake fluid in...(if I open the bleeder I assume I would have to bleed the system??) For some reason I cant picture in my minds eye the Master Cyl right now...
  16. WOW 36mm socket.. Maybe I can get that cheap at Auto ZOne or something.. I picked up recently at Harbor freight that unique Brake tool Kit to turn back the piston.. On sale 19.99 has like several adapter disc for different cars... I was worried about getting the rotors off or stripping something.. Is it true that when I put the axle nut back on it should not be real tight?? Just snug.. someone told me that recently.. I cant recall what the deal was with the Mitsubi-Junkie car other than I had to rent the slide hammer and it was a pain in the rump roast getting them off.. Can you offer any other tips or advice... Thanks Joe
  17. I feel kinda like a goof to ask this but I need to do front brakes on a 86 Brat.. New Rotors and pads... What tools do I need... Do I need a slide hammer to get the rotors off???? What exactly do I need and how much of a pain is it... I have done disc brakes on GM, Nissan, Dodge and found them to be easy.. But with a "Mitsubishi Mirage" it was a slide hammer pain in the rump roast.... Thanks Joe
  18. There was a member here that has a high power ea81 he is putting in his Brat.. I think he had it redone in NJ or somewhere.. I think the Brat is silver or Lt Blue.. I just wanted to find out again where he had the engine redone at.. Thanks Joe
  19. I towed a 84 wagon with a dolly and had no problem
  20. I currently own a ea81 car with the dual range trans. I would like to upgrade to something newer ( more power) but dont know if I should consider a ea82 with dual range or is there another subie with a dual range with a different motor??? I have no clue what car had a 2.2 motor and so on... EJ was in what?? I see a 94 Loyale on ebay with a 1.8 motor and 5 speed push button trans. How is this subie comapred to the dual range??? I dont go off roading but end up driving in all kinds of bad weather. The boss says "no excuse not to show to work" 48 miles away just because ther is 8 inches of snow... So what do you guys suggest???
  21. Yesterday I was helping a friend do his brakes on a 1991 Pontiac Gand Am. I took botice that the lug nuts look just like the special log nuts that the pugs use. This was a solid nut with the curved bottom part. I didnt have a subiw with me to see if it would fit. His car came with factory hub caps that had holes in them to show the lug nuts. The lug nuts had plastic covers over them.. Anyone ever notice this??
  22. I did have one that was hooked up to the mustache bar and the bottom of the trunk floor... I sold it never used it
  23. Well the wagon is Light Blue with 178K but no rust.. no ac.. runs good.. Joe
  24. Not a bad idea... just that Im not that great of a wrench to do a spfi conversion. As far as the 700 bucks goes... I paid more for the car when I purchased it.. And the extra engine cost some more also.. I could never let it go for 700... But Thanks for the offer..
  25. I have a 1984 subaru wagon 4x4 4 speed Hi/lo with like no rust.. Im kind of running the idea of selling it and getting maybe a 1988 ea82 4x4 Hi/lo... What would you guys do... I kinda wish my wagon had some more power and I was wondering if the 88 model spfi would be better for me... The thing is I have a spare ea81 motor with like around 100K and two spare trans with around the same miles... What do you guys think??? And what would the 84 be worth??? Just kicking the idea around and need some opinions... Joe
