  1. If you are looking for an Outback you don't have too many options. The only way you going to find a 2.2 OB is a 95, or a 96 with a manual trans. The only thing you are gaining with the 2.5 is a little more grunt. 2.2s are much better engines. If you have a little extra cash I would shoot for a 2000 or newer Outback with the 2.5 SOHC engine. They are much more refined to drive, are easier to work on and more reliable than the 2.5 DOHC found in the 96-99 OBs. That is my 2 cents I am sure there will be more to join in. Good luck!
  2. You can deffinately tow it with the rear driveshaft disconnected. That is how I always towed before I bought my car trailer.
  3. I actually had one with around 250,xxx miles. It was a 5spd. It got both a motor and trans around the same time but when I sold it it actually was purchased by someone in Colarado Springs. He flew out and then drove it back home. There are no real common issues with them, typical good running EJ.
  4. The price seems a bit steep. I dont know about out there, but for that car around here I wouldn't pay more than $1700 for and even then I would be very cautious. Any idea where the oil is going? Just with the combination of all that it would need and the mileage it just all seems like too much for the price. Just my 2 cents though. Good luck!
  5. Also check alternator output and battery condition. I just had a 98 outback in the shop yesterday that lost all the gauges and the ABS light came on and other crazy stuff started happening and it was the alt. The car would still run and start
  6. Sounds to me like a bad valve. I have also seen valve guides drop on these in two cases but that normally caused massive oil burning.
  7. I agree with porcupine. I almost did the same thing once and almost gave up on an engine like that once. Turned out to be a junk Actron gauge. Also make sure the little schrader valve is in the end of your hose.
  8. 2nd that. I was talking with the wife the other day about that it would be killer if they did.
  9. I would be happy to make that much on that setup. The motor in the car is just tired and leaky at 285,xxx miles. I am just looking to build something to help it with the bigger tires and the little bit more metal on it when I fab my bumpers and lift.
  10. I agree with John. It isn't common but under circumstances like yours I have seen some Ej22 HG failures. That is deffinately the direction I would expect to end up going.
  11. 99s have a way to common problem of the speedo head itself goes bad in the cluster. Most Subaru dealers actually stock that part. We have run into this before with a couple times this year. Anymore we just for go all the diagnostic with them anymore because we have seen it that much.

    outback struts

They are deffinately what I will be running. I can get em for $60 ea delivered to my work.
  13. I know this has been touched on before, and before you know it there are a bunch of people listing what they say works but no reason behind it. My resources are pretty much unlimited for this build (as far as stock used parts) I have been hearing alot of EJ25 shortblock with 95 EJ22 heads. The car it will be going into is a 92 Lego. I have a phase 1 shortblock sitting in my basement right now so if I could do that one it would be best for me. I am sure I can get a hold of a phase 2 but I would have to purchase that from my work. Anyone have any idea what type of power and cr I would be making on the phase 1 block with 95 EJ22 heads. Between nasioc, iclub and here there are a bunch of ideas in my head but would like to hear what actually works best.

    outback struts

pamike, did you get any pics of the tires on your car? I am thinking of going with the same ones. Do they seem to be working without rubbing anywhere? I did the same lift you did with the outback struts and springs. And also did you notice any rear tow issues? I know the trailing control arms are the same for all 90-99 legacys, I am going to check into the mounting plate to see if it is different for the Outback models to correct the tow in on the rear due to the lift. And on one other note: I took my GPS along for the first ride and the speedo is actually closer to correct now than it was with the little 14s on it:confused: It is actually still showing 42 on the speedo when my GPS says 40. I know the GPS is correct because I had it in my mustang and it read the same as the speedo all the way from 20 to 150mph
  15. It is done!! There is quite a difference in the way it rides going from 285,000 mile stock struts to 20,000 mile 99 Outback struts. This is the start for now. When I get a little more time the fabbing to go bigger will start:Flame: http://new.photos.yahoo.com/rhamersly/album/576460762404710897
  16. Ok, going out now to do the swap. The fronts should be straight drop in the rears I will have to change the mounts. I will prob post pics tonight. I will try to post back with the results when I am done but I am sure I will take it out and play first.
  17. pamike, I saw you lifted yours recently. Did you use the O/B springs? Or just struts? I will post some pics in a couple hours when I get the motivation to wake up and get out to the garage.
  18. I am running outback struts and springs.
  19. Doing my lift tomorrow morning and I will be running the 205 70 15s off of the parts outback. Just wanted to know what people were running on them and what the largest was on a stock strut setup. The one I am lifting is a 92 Leg wagon with Outback struts. And yes I have searched and it is pretty much pages of EA cars.
  20. 98 Is when subaru started normally placing a little nicer under the dash. Most before then were dealer installed and kind of half as*** zip tied to random harnesses under the dash. It is possible someone pulled it. Check for the button in the hood release handle bracket.
  21. Could just be a battery. It could have a weak cel and start to discharge when sitting.
  22. Holy crap!!! That is one of the worst ones I have seen!! A welder is how I would aproach that one. Either that or throw a motor in it. They must have run it for a while when it was coming apart.
  23. Also I don't know if you are aware or not but that is not the correct bumper for that car. That is a Japan first gen WRX bumper.
