  1. Weird stuff is, mine was built here... well, assembled more like it, but still a trait of models "assembled" here - they don't have power windows.
  2. what works for me to clean stuff like that up is petrol. Just attack it with petrol and a paintbrush, but be careful of things that shouldn't have petrol on it. Shined my carburetor up nicely
  3. yeah, the ones here in NZ are different from those in the good ol' U.S. of A. for example, my '89 GL wagon has a carb'd engine (throttle sizes are 20mm and 25mm btw) while someone on here told me the GL wagons of this year in the US are SPFI or something like that. Apart from that, our standard halogens are square, theirs are round, eh Skip?
  4. I'm not familiar with the turbo system on the EA82T, but does it feed the two banks seperately?
  5. Someone get this guy a cookie. Pure genius This mod made a good difference to my EA82. For the record, if other people want to try this, the carb on the EA82 (for the '89 GL at least) is exactly the same for the purposes of this mod. One hint though - get a split pin to tie the control arms together. They're already about in the right shape and easy to work with
  6. lol, nothing against wires and computers, I have another car that's ALL wires and computers I mean, aircon, ignition, timing, mixture, battery charging (alternator enable/disable), etc, all controlled by two computers... only things that _aren't_ computer controlled in the thing are the base idle and rough timing adjustment, lol. But yeah, there's just something nice about having your engine feed itself mechanically. Something.... hotrod-ish about it That, and it's a relatively easy DIY job to get more power out of a carb'ed engine - a fuel-injected one would need you messing with the ECU... question though is, what modifications would be neccessary to get a quad-cam to fit in there?
  7. cheers guys. An EA82T is sounding pretty good. 1 question though - I can get my hands on an EJ20 fairly cheap ($300 NZ, or about $200 US). it's a twin-cam motor and makes 140kw, as opposed to the SOHC EJ22's 99kw, which is a kind of a "wtf?" for me. The question is, will a DOHC EJ20 be able to fit into my subie? (I suppose a different question is, can the DOHC EJ22 fit in? That makes 150kw... ) And of course, the other question is will it be possible to "restore it" to the EA82's ECU-less state (carbed, distro'd)? There's something special to me about motors that use carbs, dizzies and don't need computers to run. Kind of a "hot rod" quality Hmm... maybe slap a quad barrel carbie on there or something lol Also, how reliable are EJ20/EJ22 engines with regards to the EA82, and how much punishment do you think they can take? I've read a few articles on this swap also. I have the basic tools - a welder, hacksaw, jigsaw, jacks, and all the other basics, but no engine hoist - will I be able to do it with this? Cheers
  8. Hi folks, Just a quick question - are there any subie engines out there that are an easier swap for an EA82 than the EJ22, apart from the EA82T? I'm ideally looking for something with quite a bit more power (aren't we all? ), because I'm going to build a bit of an interesting thing out of this Subie. I don't think anyone here will be able to guess what But yeah, I want to start with the engine. It's something I really want to do (Darned TOD!!!1eleven), but I don't have much access to fabrication tools and materials, and money... well, it's not in very good supply, but there's some of it around. Cheers!
  9. My EA82 gives me about 12km/liter, which is about 28mpg, this is completely stock standard, no mods whatsoever (yet ;-) ) EDIT: At highway speeds (100kmh, or about 60mph) it cruises along in 5th quite nicely, and can climb a hill without losing speed, but not a steep one. If I downshift to 4th, it can pick up speed on level road, and it can climb more serious hills without losing speed.
  10. Thanks for that. I have some trouble trying to pinpoint all the various bits mentioned in that thread though - if I find/take pics of the EA82 carb, is it possible you could tell me what bits are where? Cheers!
  11. LoL, now that I notice, cylinder #1 IS on the driver's side for me
  12. Neat! Thanks for that. how big a difference does this make, you think?
  13. Very nice, almost makes me feel like going to America and getting a subie there. You have oil and voltage gauges over there too, lol. heh, the high beam indicators on my dash are kind of dim, very hard to see. I was kind of like driving along on the highway with high beams and the halogens on, and there I was wondering why the hell people are flashing their headlights at me LOL Oops EDIT: what's that big black thing spanning most of the width of the dash on the right hand side on your car?
  14. lol, "you know you have a flat-four when your right foot is just as often to the floor as your left one"
  15. I love my subie as well The day I swapped an alternator on a subie - to that day, I've never been closer than 15ft to a subaru - I decided that day that my next car will be a subie. Sooo easy to work on! Not only that, they're so far ahead of their time - hill holder, headlight angle adjustment, adjustable suspension, power everything, all this in a '89 car. Sounds like a regular BMW, but it only cost me $300 USD I tell you, if this thing gets written off, it'd be cheaper to buy two ones just like it than pay the insurance excess! That's the best part. So easily modded too. (O/T: how do I get a Weber 36 on this beast?) All in all, Subaru for teh win!
  16. An update - just ran some seafoam-type stuff through there, and 10km's later, it's purring along as if it were new! There's an increase in power as well, but not a "wow that made a difference" sorf of an increase, more of a "hmm, I swear that 0-60 time was a little faster..." increase. This seafoam stuff really is good
  17. Wait, headlight squirters? 'cause the headlight squirters on this thing don't work........
  18. nah, no electrical wires - the word "AISIAN" or something, and a whole bunch of numbers...
  19. Cheers It's rather ironic though, this thing uses enough oil that you can just about get away with not changing it, you just top it up j/k. I know it doesn't really work that way
  20. I just bunged some seafoam-like stuff in there - a whole 250ml bottle, 'cause they said one whole bottle per 5 liters of engine oil capacity - please tell me if I overdid it, I don't want to screw up my subie! I noticed an immediate difference - the ticking is softer, but it's still not gone yet. I'll keep you posted...
  21. On another note, I have fairly bad TOD, isolated to one side of the engine, possibly cylinder 1. When it's idling low (500rpm?) the engine sort of lurches a little with each tick, and you can feel and see this lurch through the rest of the car. I'm suspecting the valve or valves dont open up fully - might this be eating away at the performance a little?
  22. Fair enough - as Carol Shelby said, horsepower costs money (I read that somewhere on these forums) I'm just looking for a little bit more - its gearing is very steep, esp. 1st, and when you're taking off uphill it loses half the momentum it's gained in 1st gear in the time you shift from 1st to 2nd, and it has a pretty hard time gaining speed in 2nd.
  23. thanks - question though, with the last major service 75,000kms ago (!!!), what difference would all this make?
