No special tricks. You might consider a conversion to 134A. I have had good success with converting my York systems. Yes, you have to set the idle a bit higher in cars with AC, so that you have the RPMs when the compressor turns on. Todd
-
The Gen1s did not have factory air, so the service manuals will not have anything on it really. You have an aftermarket setup, (designed for Subaru). There is no idle up, so in the summer, you have to raise the base idle up some, to compensate for the compressor load. What compressor do you have? If you have the mini York, they growl! They are a piston compressor and naturally noisy. Otherwise, check your belt and the mount bolts on the bracket and the compressor. Todd

1976 Subaru 4X4 wagon (Texas) Dallas
SUBARU3 posted a topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I'm placing here too. Some historic people don't look at the ebay/CL listings. This is a 76 not a 75. Round front turnsignals. 118K/1600cc EA71. It's got some rust issues, but minor. (TEXAS CAR) Tan interior. Original red in color. I can't get it, but it would be nice for someone. I can facilitate with getting and shipping if someone wants it. His email is JeepHoss10@hotmail.com He is sending me some pics. Clear coat??
SUBARU3 replied to SUBARU3's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
It's really more hazing, (Whiteish). No peel. It's a 1995. It on the corners of the roof, near the windshield. I'm thinking that the whole roof should be re cleared. I guess I will look into this more. Thanks! Todd -
I'm having some clear coat failure on my Impreza. The base color is fine and the clear coat has not peeled.......yet. I'm told it can be "color sanded" and reshot with clear, without having to paint the color again. Some say they just do the roof hood and trunk top surfaces, (those that typically fail). Is this true? Has any one done or, heard of that? (Sure would be nice to keep the original paint)! Todd

I'm going to try to get these fabricated by someone over the summer. I have some places I am investigating. Seems that demand is low at this time of year and my time is short. That said, I will build the request list and work to get this underway. If anyone has the ability, time, or desire to assist with this....shoot me an email! Todd

True. I think I'll go the POR 15, or rust bullet route. Thanks! Todd

How to put 2WD 5-Spd Tranny in a '79 Brat?
SUBARU3 replied to Crabman's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
It looks like a late EA71 trans. Like a gen 2. The rubber mount is different on Gen 1/2WDs, but I think you could make it work. The 2WD rubber mounts on Gen 2/ 2wd's are the same as the Gen 1 4wds. But the Gen 1 2wds had a rubber mount that was on the bottom, not the sides of the trans. Todd -

Looks a little deeper to me. Nice car!!! A keeper!! Todd -
My feeling is that you are going to see a rapid re-introduction of 2WD cars by Subaru. AWD saps gas mileage, performance, is mechanically complex/costly to develop and more expensive to buy. Most of America does not need this. Yes, DOES not need this. The few places that do, only need it occasionally in the winter. With gas on the march to $4 a gallon, Subaru has to begin to rethink it's products, or risk losing huge pieces of the market. I have talked to a few recently that are eliminating Subaru, BECAUSE they don't want AWD and the associated gas mileage costs. That's a 3 car loss of sales, just with people I know!! Sure AWD is nice to have and fun to play with off road, but that buyer will still be able to get it as an option I'm sure. Time will tell how the "Toyota" influence effects Subaru, but I predict some major change between that and the rise in fuel prices. todd

I believe you will encounter issues with the rear crossmember/trans mounts, as they differ, the exhaust hangers and the position of the opening in the floor. If you have access to a 2 wd pats car, you will have it made. Todd -
Ok, so I remove the weather strip and find rust. Not bad and it's only on the lip. Anyone fix this before? Ideas? Thanks much, Todd

and work it and work it and work it! They are a PITA to get off sometimes! Todd -
Why is it a salvage title? It must have been pretty bad for the price to be so low. 4K is WAY below book value. Check www.NADA.com www.edmunds.com www.kbb.com The things you mention wrong are minor, with exception of the headgasket and that is not the owners fault. Subaru has been doing goodwill repairs on those leaking gaskets for extremely low mileage 2.5s, (such as this one), even beyond their extended warranty/coolant fix 8 years/100k. Contact them and be nice! This Forester may still even be under that warranty, depending on the delivery date. 3K is kinda insulting, but then again I have not seen the vehicle, nor do I know why it's a salvage title. Salvage titles can pull values down significantly. If the title was clear, I'd say walk to you if you offered me 3K. Shop wisely. Hope you get a good deal. And yes the noise you hear is "piston slap". It's normal. Louder when cold and then should quiet. Lot's on the board. Research Piston slap/2.5 Post some pics......hell I might be interested for 3K! Best, Todd

Is anybody with web skills interested in "rebuilding" www.vintagesubaru.com in collaboration with me? This is my longstanding website, (it's in serious need of an update and ongoing management), that I would like to share the responsibility, (and credit), with someone else. I'll continue to pay the fees, domain/hosting, so no cost to you. I think the site could be made far better and more informative, if someone with better Flash/HTML experience than I would join in. Is anyone out there interested in this co-ownership? Todd
