Ok, I just got a FANTASTIC deal on a 99 Forester for my Mom!! Too cheap to mention. Might upset you all. LOL! I didn't have too much time time to research. Put my mind at ease please! It has 81K Nice condition automatic, no torque bind. Strong , no overheating, perfect oil and coolant. BUT it is the SOHC 2.5 Phase 2 I believe? What's the synopisis on this engine, good, bad, indifferent??? I know it's not the troublesome DOHC 2.5, but is it reasonability close to the reliability of the mid 90s, non-interference 2.2's?? I have used the VW beetle rag joint.(60's and 70's) It works nicely! Retain and use the 4 metal inserts from your original Subaru joint. VW aftermarket parts are widely available and cheap. These joints make steering much tighter! Todd www.vintagesubaru.com

There are still plenty of cars that use that engine on the road, that either need an engine, or will need one in the future. Hang on to it....don't part a perfectly good engine for some "simple" part that can be found easily elsewhere. If you want to sell it, try craigslist or ebay. Our board does not have alot of big spenders! Todd

I'm glad I finally got this kinda figured out......Axles are an easy switch out, esp if the hub side is the same. You guys are the best! Todd

Hmm....it says that the 93 and 94 manual Impreza uses a different axle than the 95 forward. But I have an early 95, with a build date of 6/94, so I bet I can just pretend mine is a 94 for all intents and purposes. Can you swap the stubs from one to another? Hmm????? Todd

It says tha this trans was different between the "L" model, the station wagon and the non "L". How can there be that much difference between 5 speed/FWD manuals from 1993-1995? It seems that after 8/1994 they were more consistent. So it's just ratio? I want to pick up a spare, since FWD/manual only Imprezas seem to be getting rare. Mine has only 69K, so I should just talk myself out of spending the money on somethng I won't need for YEARS!! Todd

OK.....beating a dead horse here. Will a 1995 EJ 2.2 engine be a drop in replacement, or should I say the BEST drop in replacement, for an EJ 2.5, 1998 Forester? No exhaust or wiring issues? Thanks!! Todd

Well, that answers that question! I'll try Lucas 1st and then proceed from there. I hate to go used and then end up again with a leaker. I guess racks age by years, as well as mileage. These cars have pretty low mileage. I have found rebuilt racks for $187. Good deal? Todd

When mid 90's Legacys/Imprezas have a powersteering/rack leak, is it easier to replace or repair? The leaks are at the boots, where they meet the rack casing. (or live with it) Less than 70K on one and less than 90 K on the other. Thanks! Todd

Well, I will keep them compressed then. I have 4 EJ and 3 EA engines, so I tend to "store" parts for the future. (Like a 10x30 building full of Subaru crap!) It's an addiction! "I might need that someday, better keep it" kind of thinking!! Thanks a bunch guys! Todd

Ok...I have a few extra of the EJ series tensioners. Mid 90s. How best to store them? Compressed, with a pin in them, or completely uncompressed? How do they come new from Subaru? Just curious. Todd

Thanks. It just seems to me that a FWD, basic 5 speed would not differ much at all from 1993-1996. Off course 1996 or 1997 they ALL went AWD. Todd

What do you think the difference would be in a "thru 7-1994" transmission, from a " from 8-1994" transmission? (5speed/FWD/1.8) I'm looking for a 5 speed/ FWD only/ 1.8 liter trans. My build date is 6/94. Do you think a 8/94 trans from a 1.8 would be all that different from a 6/94? Thanks! Todd

Just 2 stainless steel screws. Use a course thread. That's all that Subaru used!! Is the floor all rusted out where the pedal goes? If so...place some sheet metal in and re-rivet to that. Use larger rivets. Todd

I'm sure that in CA, it is the same as many other emission testing states. Like was mentioned, you cannot "add" emmission pieces that were not present when the car was new. Likewise, the state cannot expect the car to run "cleaner" than when the car was new either! They cannot hold a 1979 Subaru to the same standard as a 1999 car. Esp, if you cannot add equipment! Emission testing guidelines look at the original emission output of the car when new. They factor in time, mileage and "reasonable wear and tear" , to arrive at the standard. Todd
