Yep, the engine was running perfect, but I knew it was WAY overdue for the timing belt. So I figured a few hours and I'd be done! (Yea right!!) Oh there was a piece of aluminum in the timing belt cover too. I'm thinking of having aluminum welded in to area, drill and retap???? Maybe I could drill further into the block, but I don't know how far I can go Maybe I'll be parting a perfectly good 2.2 engine and getting a longblock.........gosh I hope not! Todd

OK.....I have a real problem. 2.2 Impreza 80K In doing the timing belt, I discover that a pulley was loose. I took it off to check it and discover this!!!! OMG!! Now what. I noticed the belt was wearing on the edge because of this too. What can be done?? welding? JB weld? The bolt catched the last part of the threads, a little less than 1/4", but I'm afraid to tighten to the recommended torque. (I doubt it will torque) This is a perfect engine, with no issues at all, BUT THIS STUPID BOLT! How could this have happened? Factory? This was the original timing belt too! Ideas? suggestions? Look at the pic and weep. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/uploads/144/PDC_0191.JPG Thanks everybody in advance! (I like my Gen 1s a WHOLE LOT BETTER NOW!! LOL Todd

Help on emission (NJ) inspection
SUBARU3 replied to iflyifr's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
300 on hydrocarbon?? That's a low standard to meet. In TX it's 453 or below. My 70's cars run 66-98, at idle and on the dyno respectively. I'd check all hoses and possibly replace all vac hoses. They are cheap and easy to do. Often they leak at the connection point from being dry and brittle. Go over the engine with a fine tooth comb: spark plugs car adjustment (lean, by turning adjuster screw inward/car may be running too rich.) check air filter, restricted air enriches mixture. change oil/filter (synthetic 20/50 till winter, then 10W30) I'd also run 100% synthetic oil. For some reason emission #s are decreased with this oil, verses regular oil. Home this helps. Oh Your car is 25 years old. In many states they are safety inspection only/no emissions. Check in your state for exemption options. Certainly they are not holding your BRAT to the same standards as a new car!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In TX, I'm exempt with my older ones...25 years and older. But the last year I had to do it, it was on a dyno and they ran VERY VERY clean. almost as clean as a 2000 model the tech said!! todd -
Very innocent!

I have not seen the car since I was 17. I'm sure it's crushed by now . It had no AC. All my current ones have the Lone-star system. Todd

NICE!! Glad to see the young Subaru lovers coming onboard! You are lucky to find that car with such low mileage!!! Todd -
Well, I wish I was 16 again!! This is me and my first car. It was a 1975, 1400, DL, automatic. Gosh I loved that car!!! Wish I had it now. Has anyone seen it around??????? LOL. OH where is it now????? Todd http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=7538

Just figured out that you can turn the 4 spoke GL steering wheel around. You just have to turn around the little center gold cup, behind the horn pad. That way the horn pad goes on correctly. Steering wheel aligns perfectly by turning it completely over 180*. This is good because, most steering wheels have sun damage to the topside. The bottoms are usually pristine! Makes an improvement!! This obviously only works with the GL, 4 spoke , Gen one wheels. There's my pointer for the week. Todd

I will have to take a look at some of the newer ones and see. Thanks! Todd

I've been a Flight Attendant for them for 19 years. I have a second medical carreer though, but I can't quit AA! I fly part-time. Todd

This will be difficult to locate I'm sure. I need a automatic shifter interlock switch, for a gen 1/FWD. The 1978 or 1979 will work. It is INSIDE the car, connected to the shifter mechanism. (Earlier models were ON the transmission.) Pretty easy to get to. I'll take the whole shifter thingy if someone has it or sees it in a yard sometime!! Thanks! Todd

Hmm.....you were 10 minutes from me when you were ate DFW!!!!!!!!!! You didn't call????? I would have ************ if I was coming in from a trip, or going out and saw that Gen 1 in front of the terminal!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( I fly for American) Glad you are back OK....keep us posted on the progress! Todd

Does anybody have access to the different years of the Datsun Z cars?? I need the back glass opening measurements. I have the Datsun/Nissan restoration catalog and it looks like their back glass rubber seal might work on Gen 1 Sedans and coupes/hardtops. Looks like the 280 might be fairly close??? Thanks, Todd

It is just a resonator. I have found stock is better that modifications and the stock exhausts usually outlast the car. Todd

EA71 Engine Variations?
SUBARU3 replied to Seahag1978's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Yes, but the EGR piping is an easy fix too. You have 4 hole smog and 1 hole smog. Todd -
EA71 Engine Variations?
SUBARU3 replied to Seahag1978's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Mary: Call me. I have dealt with all the variations. ALL variations will work in your BRAT with liitle or no modification. Don't get alarmed. Todd -

Teape Subaru?
SUBARU3 replied to wrc1914's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
I thought they were opening in Hurst? Guess that was wrong information. As for rude and unknowledgeble people, that will lose them customers F A S T! The franchse owner/manager better get on the stick with that. There simply is NO excuse for that kind of behavior at the parts counter. I tire of young "know it all, but know nothing kids". Growing up in a family owned Subaru dealership, I can tell you that this kind of behavior would result in suspension or termination! There are too many NICE people willing to be behind that counter! OH.... "parts people" can become "parts professionals", if they learn from their customers! Oh...Subarus paint quality is FAR superior to many others. Hondas are very susceptable to acid rain for example. I have a 78 with good original paint STILL! There...my 2 cents! Todd -

360 shortblock motor
SUBARU3 replied to SkankinPickle's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
No...the 360's were air cooled. Not sure what the application is for these. I think it's the later Japan market vans. Todd -
Welcome too! Keep your chin up, you will find the car you desire! Todd
