  1. I guess this is a lesson to all......"check your hole for rust"! LOL Todd
  2. I have friend who just acquired a 4WD 79 wagon. Texas car, so no typical rust.................but. There is some rust under the interior dash on the drivers side right where the hood cable comes through. Judging from the fact that there is no rust elsewhere on the car, this appears to have happened from a manufacturing oversight/defect. The rubber plug that the hood cable goes through was never "seated" properly at manufacture. You can see the rubber lip was folded under and allowed water to seep in and soak the dash insulation for years. So now the cable hole is shot with rust and it has spread further towards the passenger side of the car. Now, when you look under the hood, at the cable hole in the cowl, there is NO rust. As a matter of fact the entire spare tire platform looks like new. I know there are 2 layers of steel in this area and it's apparent that this rust started from the "inside to the outside", into just the one layer. It has not spread to the outside layer. It is under the seam caulk too, where the firewall goes vertical.. I told the guy that the dash needs to come out to gain access and any body caulk in that area needs to be removed and then rplaced after repair. Remove the rust, POR15 the area and fiberglass it in. (I said he's luck he caught it before it spread to the 2nd layer). Re-route the hood cable and seal the hole up. Any other suggestions for this kind of rust? He's putting some $$ into this car and want's it to last! I told him my thoughts and wanted to toss it to all of you for ideas. Thanks! Todd
  3. Ok...the tools to get from SUBARU are way overpriced or discontinued, so what are the options, inventions and ideas and sources for these tools? Does wood really work? This information is fragmented throughout the board. We all do belts at some point and these tools are really the best, "safest" way to do the job. Main pulley holder Subaru # 499977000 Cam pulley holder Subaru # 499207100 Double cam holder for 2.5s Are there other tools too? Todd
  4. I have 2 1995 Imprezas: 95 EA22 Automatic L AWD 88K (In 95 the AWD/2.2 combination were available.) 95 EA18 5 speed L FWD 56K Both are Fantastic vehicles. The automatic is flawless and shifts smoother glass. The 5 speed is just as nice. Shifts very much like my 79 GF! The only issues I have had with both were recall related. (Cam and crank sensor replacement.) I just had the temp sensor on the 2.2 fart, so $20 later it's good as new. The Imprezas have a bit better build quality then the Legacys in my opinion, as they are assembled completely in Japan. No mexican made parts! The price is low at 2K. I'd balk at $1800 if I was the seller. I would intentionally not sell it to you if you lowballed too low. Be careful! Todd
  5. 90-94 Legacy sunroofs will all interchange. I just placed a 93 in a 91 LSi. No problems. There are different types of tints, (blue and bronze), but that doesn't effect the fit. Hope this helps. Todd
  6. My god are they hard to get to or what!!!!!!!! I need hands half my size! Todd
  7. Thanks! I'm going to clean it and then see. Replacement is cheap and and too. Todd
  8. Ok...I know my older Subarus like the back of my hand, but when it comes to electronic cramp on my Imprezas, I get lost ....FAST!. Here's what's happening: I start the car and the cooling fans come on and them off and then on and then off. They run for about 30 sec then off 15 sec. )+ or - a few seconds. It is not related to the AC system. Compressor and AC are off during this time. Additionally, the car acts like it needs choked more. You can give it gas or it stalls. After it idles and warms up a bit, the fans don't cycle and it's fine. (Well they turn on when they are suppose to.) Could this be a temp sensor? It mistakenly senses the engine is warm and is turning on the fans and leaning the mixture? (In error, as the engine is cold) Any thoughts? Todd 95 Impreza L 2.2 AWD automatic
  9. I just thought one of my lines was leaking, but it was the rear of the master cylinder. The fluid ran straight down the booster and on to the brakeline and then flowed down it to the point it dripped off. Looked like a line till I looked real close. Todd
  10. Well, my cars are in really good condition, but my newest project, (78 DL wagon), has a few minor isues to deal with. The bottom of the rear right quarter was full of dirt, so it rusted from neglect. Not a bad fix, but I'm not wanting a return of rust. I think I'll be using this stuff on any future rust too. eBay seems to have it. Is Rust Bullet the same quality? Todd
  11. Has anyone use this stuff? Is one better than the other? It seems to be a miracle worker on rust, or is that just BS? If it works like they say....it's WELL worth the price! Your thoughts? Todd
  12. I have a spare saver tire and placed it in a XT spare bag and placed it behind the passenger seat. Under the truck would be good! Keep me posted!! Todd
  13. I think my new 78 project has a leaker. It's not a priority, but I will get to it fairly soon. I'll keep you updated. But you are right in that it might be just as easy to pull the dash. Todd
  14. McBRAT: What's the instructions on the heater core removal from the side, without removing the assembly? You do it from the right side correct? (Gen 1) Todd
  15. Thanks!! Don't have photoshop on the computer. You are looking at a "un-touched photo". Todd
  16. Don't see much, if any Gen 1 representation! Let's not show disrespect to our forefathers!! I have 3 pretty good looking gen1's. Many shots. I can take some higher resolution ones too. Maybe I could put them all in a nice location and take them all together? Paul....where's your 78???? If you don't want my GF or wagon, then somebody has to submit at least one gen 1. (I won't be offended if it's not mine.) Also, with so many NICE cars on the board, 18 months would be nice!!! Regards, Todd
  17. Interesting! I don't seem to have one on my 78 automatic. At least not a fancy one. I think all I have is the modulator under the carb, on the front of the manifold and one mounted on top. Just one vac line to the trans. My trans is a bit slow to shift into 2nd. Could this be vac related? Todd
  18. I going to play with the wires and figure this thing out! I'll keep you all posted. Todd
  19. Great drawing! I need only 2 wires for the Hitachi system though, but I have 4 in the car's harness. What do I do with the 2 extra going to the resistor? Thanks, Todd
  20. The wood side covering can be obtained at a "sign shop" Like Fast Signs or the like. Anyone who does vehicle lettering and sign making. Be sure and get the"highquality", exterior grade, vinyl material. It will most like likely be far superior to even the original stuff too! If you have trouble, I can get it here in Dallas. Todd
  21. Got a quick question. Hope someone may know the answer. Are the automatic transmission front motor mounts, (bracket and rubber block), the same as the standard transmission ones? Close inspection visually, they looked identical, but when I installed my new motor, with the mounts from the "standard" trans car, it appeared that they about 1/4" off. However, with some pushing of the rubber, I was able to set the mounts in the holes. A tight fit though! I guess the rubber flexes 1/4" without difficulty. I think I'm OK with that. I have installed 20 plus of these engines, however all were standard. If anyone has a parts book that has 1977-1979 Subaru cars with automatic transmissions listed, I'd love to get the left and right front motor mount bracket and rubber part #s. I can then compare it to the standard ones. (I just don't have a "2wd" "automatic" parts reference for these years. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!! Todd
  22. I think they can do composites of multiple shots to fill in one page. Like Jan....All gen 1 BRATs Feb....All Gen 2 BRATs and so on. My pics are yours for the asking! Let's hurry for these would make nice Christmas gifts!! Todd
