SUBARU3 replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nice car! I'm so glad to see people starting to take a renewed interest in Gen 1s. I was beginning to think Paul and I were all that was left! Let me know if I can help with any parts. http://m2.aol.com/subaru3 Todd 79 DL wagon 78 DL wagon 79 GF 80 BRAT 95 Impreza AWD 95 Impreza coupe 91 Legacy Lsi 76 VESPA Ciao 77 VESPA Ciao 74 VESPA Ciao -
1978 conversion to electronic ignition???
SUBARU3 replied to SUBARU3's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nope, both are DLs. I added a tach to one, but that wire I know. It's just the 4 wires in the original harness, and I only need 3. The distrib. has it's own wire that runs along the firewall and plugs into the distributor Thanks for the drawing. It helps! Todd -
Hi: I'm back again on this issue. I'm trying to convert my 78 "standard" ignition to electronic ignition. I have replaced the all these parts with a 1979 Nipondenso "electronic" ignition components. 1. Distributor 2. Coil, module The questions I have is that the wiring harness in the car is different than what my electronic ignition cars, of the same vintage have. The wiring diagram is confusing at best in the factory manual! Basically, I have 4 wire connectors in the harness, on the standard ignition car. (2 to the resistor and 2 to the coil). The electronic ignition car has only 3 wires in the harness, 2 to resistor and one to coil. What do I do with the 4 wires in the harness? Are there other wiring changes I need to manke too? Regards, Todd

ea81 Auto tranny question...
SUBARU3 replied to Mr. Carb's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My God...if the opinion is that bad on EA-81 autos powered with the 1800, what do you all think of 78 DL AUTOMATIC with the 1600??? I might not be able to get out of my own way?? On the good side, it's a fresh, clean, 23K, 1600 and the 78 DL was a bit lighter that the newer cars. Todd -
Thanks all. I am quite unexperienced with the autos. (But learning!) I'm just so excited about having something different. I've ALWAYS had manuals! It's spins well. I'm hoping it shifts just as well. I have a bad feeling though. It's an old transmission 130 K. Hopefully it will work well enough to get in and out of the driveway till I get Pauls 57 K trans. Has any one, besides Paul, driven these early automatics? Thoughts? Todd

Ok, having no experience with automatics, but able to extrapulate on my manual trans experience, I have a stupid question! 1979 automatic.....(My salvage yard project).....To install the torque converter, do you just turn it about till it seats down and spins freely? There are 3 sets of splines, one for the oil pump. It just seemed too easy to replace on the shaft! It spins freely, so does that mean that all the shafts are lined up? I took it off to replace the oil seal on the shaft. I also noted that the bottom flywheel/driveplate cover bolts need to be longer than the manual flywheel cover bolts. Case is thicker on the automatic. Any pointers on working with these trans? I'm hoping all is well with it. I'm getting Moosen's old auto with 57K on it soon, so if this ones is screwed I have his! (Thanks Paul!!!) Todd

anyone heard of an "fe"?
SUBARU3 replied to the sucker king's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
FE was only in the coupe. They also had a higher gear ratio 5 speed. They were not any different otherwise. Todd -
Any door from a late 1977 to 1979, 2 door coupe, sedan, or hardtop will fit. (DL, GF) The glass WILL need to be changed. The BRAT has unique glass. Easy job though. Actually, the car doors are BETTER than the original BRAT doors. The cars had to meet "side impact" standards, so SUBARU added a steel reinforcement to the internal structure of the door. (Similar to the later cars.) The BRATS did not have to meet this standard for some reason. Hmm! I have switched, (prior to painting), all the doors on my Gen 1 BRATs to car door for specifically this reason. You are safer in a side collision!! Todd http://m2.aol.com/subaru3

Hey....looks pretty sharp!! Glad it got a good home! I think the delay might have been the weekend, plus the fact its quite a distance from TX. Regards, Todd

Switching to electronic ignition
SUBARU3 replied to SUBARU3's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I just dug out the manual, so I will trace the lines and figure out what changes need to take place. I just hate ignition systems! LOL Todd -
tips on pulling engine/transaxle:'81wagon
SUBARU3 replied to DaveAP's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have to agree. I have had a miserable time everytime I try to pull it all as an assembly. I feel it's far easier and safer to separate. Todd -
Switching to electronic ignition
SUBARU3 replied to SUBARU3's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yep, it's on the same road. They are closed on Sundays. Hey, let me know if you come across any 76-79s or up to 81 BRATs in your travels. Todd -
Switching to electronic ignition
SUBARU3 replied to SUBARU3's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks Skip. I have the orginal 79 electronic ignition system to put in, but I think I have a different wiring harness in the 78. I will be looking at at the diagram very close! Oh. The yard is Little Johns. They are are Elliott Reader of 121 going into Ft Worth. They have 1 79 wagon, (beat), a few EA 81's, quite a few 85-90s and a few XTs. Maybe an early Legacy or 2 too. They had a beautiful 84 BRAT, but they crushed it. Todd
