  1. bump Still looking for anyone with pointers on the ignition thing. Thanks, Todd
  2. It was so weird....I just was in the area of my favorite salvage yard and I was even dressed in business attire, when I decided to "just walk through" and see if they had anything of my "vintage". Usually, now days...these go directly to the crusher, since there is little value in their parts. But I was hoping! I first came upon a carcass of one that had been in the old section for years, but now was moved closed to the crusher. I said to myself," I'm wasting my time and also getting my shoes dirty". Then I rounded the corner and ther she sat!!! BEAUTIFUL!! No cars on top of her. Nothing even touching her!! I said "MY GOD....where did you come from?" I know there had to be divine intervention to have no cars on top. (This yard stacks everything!) Well, since the owners know me well, I asked to buy her. Yes, they had the title and the deal was sealed. I headed back into the yard to protect my new baby. I locked the doors, rolled up the windows and had it towed to the protective cage, tillI could get it towed home. I got it yesterday! She cleaned up and SHINED up like nearly new! It was apparently garaged for most of it's life. Interior is in super condition too. I do have to replace the engine, (no big deal though, I have 3 extras.) It looks to have thrown a rod. Big hole in case behind the pully. Most likely run without oil. (78 DL, automatic, 2WD, 130K) Todd
  3. Hey guys..I have a quick question. My recent "acquisition" of a 78 wagon has standard ignition. I want to switch to electronic ignition. I have all the parts from a 79 system, including the distributor. What wiring differences are there. I have managed to get myself somewhat confused in the process. Any ideas? I have both the Nippondenso system and the Hitachi system. Todd BTW.. After a good bath and mud removal, this baby might not even need paint!!
  4. <<<<<<<<<"skinny and old looking">>>>>>>>>>>>> Now that's a subjective statement! LOL Todd
  5. I'd check the valve, the hoses, (where they go onto the core) I'd bet the valve is leaking. Of course, the core could be bad too. Todd
  6. Here's my new baby!! It was headed to the crusher Wednesday. I don't know how it survived not being stacked on a car or having a car placed on it!! That's not rust on the sides, its splashed with mud all over! Anyway, I need to think of a name for her. Todd
  7. Typically the heater control valve on gen 1's locks up. This leads to the failure of the slider that both opens and closes the heater valve and also a flap redirector in the heater box. The owner does not know when the valve fails and continues to use the slide dial on the dash. After the valve seizes, further use of the temp control slider will break a small white pivot on the side of the heater box and thus no use of the flapper in the box. Air is then not efficiently directed through the core on the hot setting. You have to set the flapper in the box manually and leave it there or fix the slider. You need the white plastic piece with a "cog" that fits into the heater box to fix correctly. I always remove the failed, leaking, control valve. (That might be what is leaking for most people). Hook the 2 hoses directly up to the core. Put an on/off inline valve in the engine compartment, that way you can turn off the coolant flow in summer. The cores can be repaired if they are leaking buy a radiator shop. Hope this helps. Todd
  8. hmm......Email me your price. What do you think shipping may be. Fedex freight via pallet is the cheapest. I have an account with them. Todd
  9. I want to keep this car , not part it. I will be putting back together. Todd
  10. I'll get pics when I get it! Gimme a break guys! I just found it today. I don't carry my digital camara in the tool box! LOL At anyrate....I was just excited, so I had to share it with you all. So are the 70s autos fairly reliable? is 130K kinda high for it? What usually messes up on them? What would be the cost for a decent rebuild if needed? Forgive the questions, of all the 70s knowledge I have, I am severely lacking on automatics. Todd
  11. I got in trouble today. I went to my favorite yard and they had just got a 78 2WD wagon in. Original TX vehicle, NICE condition, no rust buckets in Tx !! BEAUTIFUL interior. And they still have the title. The engine threw a rod, but no biggie, I have 3 extra engines. It's automatic!! I have wanted an automatic 70s for some time! The trans seems good! 130 K. I bought it!! More work for me! I think I'm crazy. I rolled up the windows and rolled it into a corner till I can tow it home! Anybody know ANYTHING about a 70s automatic???? Todd
  12. Ok.... I tried to return a call, but no answer. I should have went with you all. I would have stayed out of trouble! I got in trouble though. I went to my favorite yard and they had just got a 78 2WD wagon in. Original TX vehicle, NICE condition and they still have the title. The engine threw a rod, but no biggie, I have 3 extra engines. It's automatic!! I have wanted an automatic 70s for some time! The trans seems good! 130 K. I bought it!! More work! Anybody know ANYTHING about a 70s automatic???? Todd
  13. Thanks guys! It's just scary to buy with high miles. It's that unknown! Todd
  14. I have located a 95 Legacy with 168Kon it. $2400. It looks like it has 50K on it!! It runs like it has 50K on it. All original except timing belt, h20 pump and seals. I'm looking at it for a friend. What do you think will fail first, and when? I have never had a newer generation up that high in ,mileage. AWD, automatic, L wagon, 168K, 2.2, antilock brakes Todd
  15. I have one. I'll email it to you. Regards, Todd
  16. If someone gets it, I'll buy the 2 large black panels that cover the entire rear of the car that are inside the trunk. Todd
  17. Hmm...maybe that's why I had so many stares in PA when I drove my 79 GF up and back! I plan on driving it up to the Kinleys Subaru picnic next year in Knobles Grove. Anyone ever been to it?? There are far more on the road than I realized! What is the attraction to older Subes in Montana? Alaska? Don't they rust fast in those places? I be interested in learning more about those salvage yards in Montana too! Todd
  18. I30 and loop 12.....there is an McDonalds on the west side of loop 12 on Jefferson. That might be a good meeting place! I might be able to meet you guys. I should give somebody my cell # and then if you are already in the yards, I could catch up with you. (It all depends how late I have to work). I know there used to be a yard called BIG STATE on Jefferson. They are closed now, but all the cars are still in there! They had a ton of old Subi stuff 70s and 80s. Awesome salvage usually has some 80s, Daryls may have some 80s. Pick and Pull....well one never knows! Als pick and pull (2nd ave/Dallas) usually has 80s. Todd
  19. Anyone with anymore data on the olds ones?
  20. Let me know what you guys are doing...I might be able to join you. Todd
  21. Thanks for the compliments all! I do have a lot of $$ in them and $$ can make anything look nice! I will get a pic of my 80 BRAT up sometime. Well, it would appear that there are far more 70s then I thought! Although I still haven't counted 60 yet!! Lets keep the #s coming in. Thanks, Todd
  22. Hey moderators: Could you move this to the older generation? I goofed. So far, It would seem that there are far more than I realized. Todd
