I was talking with a guy at the Subaru dept at the Auto Show and he told me that the only semi closed deck on the market for now is in the STi. It is hard for me to believe since turboed 2.2 legacies got semi closed deck in the early 90's. Why would Subaru go back in deck strenght for forced induction engines and use open decks? So... about the turboed 2.5 and 2.0 found in regular WRX, are they open or semi closed?

So, from what I red on the forum. ''Something'' (which I did not figure out yet) sens information (volts) to the selenoid C that controls the hydraulic pressure applied on clutches. Depending on the pressures applied on clutches, the torque transfer varies from 90/10 (f/r) to 50/50. Quite simple. Where does the system takes the information about what the torque transfer should be? I mean, what sensors detects the condition/wheel spin. I will have to try an automatic Subaru. With a standard 90/10 ratio varying to 50/50 it sounds like a part time AWD like those in CRVs and Rav4.

I know the electronic stuff is only on automatic EJ models. I said a word about my manual '00 Impreza and my previous '92 Loyale to compare the viscous AWD next to the T/C 4WD, which I prefer. And as I like to have a 50/50 in snow, I might get an automatic Legacy if I can trick it out to turn the 50/50 on/off as I want. I refered to ''older'' Legacies as I don't know how the newer ones work. I'm in Quebec and the 50/50 thing is just to get a little more fun out of the car when we get enough snow. I don't want a hill climber and I'd only use the 50/50 thing in snow. After driving the Loyale for a winter, I thought I'd like to have something that would go throught almost anything. And after a few months with a Lada Niva, I realize that what I really like is a car with a good feeling (brakes, steering, power) and a locked 50/50 system. A DCCD is too expensive and full time 4WD as in RX/II models is getting too old. So there's not a lot of choices here... I'm not a newbie whe it comes to car. I don't know how the automatic trannies AWD system works, but only because I did not red about it. If I could find a tech sheet about this I'd go through. I just wanna know how it works to find out what can be done with it.

I red somewhere that the AWD is an electric (electronic) one in older Legacies. How does it actually work? Is it somekind of temporary AWD or is it a full time AWD that changes the front/rear power transfer. I red it is possible to remove the fuse so that the AWD will not work and the car will get stucked in FWD mode. What I'm wondering is if the opposite can be done too, bypassing the electronics somewhere to get the car stucked in 50/50 mode. So I'd need to know how the AWD works on those car to figure out what can be done. Why I'm asking this is I have a '00 manual Impreza and I had a '92 4WD Loyale. I did prefer the 4WD on the Loyale that the AWD on the Impreza. It is pretty nice to have a real 50/50 (locked) power transfer. So I'm wondering if there's a way to get the 50/50 on an automatic Legacy with a small modification in the electronic control. I don't have the money for a DCCD, so I'm looking for a cheap alternate.

My '92 Loyale is missing on power, has rough idle and idle goes up/down when hot. I red a little on the forum and the both TPS and EGR came out as potential problems. I looked at my EGR and the inner is kinda hard to move. Then I realized it been unplugged. So I have what seem to be an unplugged faulty EGR. The car is a winter beater but as I like to work on cars I change small things here and there. I'm wondering what I should do with the EGR valve. Replug it? Change it? Remove it and put a block off plate? Or leave it as it is?

I red 2 different versions of this. In both there is a switch to choose from locked, manual (you choose) and auto (the car chooses). What is different is what it actually controls... I red somewhere it was the split ratio and somewhere else it was the % of the ''lock'' (from 0 to 100%, so not locked, partially locked, fully locked).
-
With the difference that... I'd like to keep the drivetrain all EJ, not use an EA tranny. I never did look at an older Impreza, but I remember I red that it was a temporary 4WD, not to use it all the time as newer does as it could damage it. So I thought it was the same kind of 4WD that was in EA cars. The idea is that I really love the ''locked central diff'' (transfer case... that is) on my '92 Loyale, it works way better in snow than my Impreza does (2000 Brighton) and I'd like to get the same thrill on an EJ tranny. And... If i was able to get it D/R too... If there's any way to lock the central diff on an AWD I'd just go that way. it would be easier.

I know there are D/R AWD in 2.0X Foresters (not available everywhere, and not here in Canada). I know the first generations Impreza first had a 4WD instead of the actual AWD (maybe not everywhere, but here it was the case up to about '96-'97) I'm wondering if there's any way to have the mix between 'em. 4WD with D/R... as the older EA series did in some model. Take an older 4WD Impreza and put a dual range in it. Any way?

It looks like I'm having problem with the calipers on my 2000 Impreza Brighton. I had one serviced this summer because it was jamming and now the other one is doing the same. It is kinda anoying and I don't wanna mess with calipers that will need to be serviced or chnaged every 2 years or so. So I'm just wondering if there's any calipers from another Subaru model that fits right on my car. I'd keep the discs as they are new.

Who changed his radio in a EA82?

There should be a radio somewhere that is not too deep to get in there... -

dreedraffs replied to dreedraffs's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I was looking at the sounddomain site to get ideas. This make me wanna clarify a detail... I want to keep the H/U ''inside'' the dash, I don't want to put a sleeve on the plastic trim and put the H/U in the sleeve. I want the h/u to be where it belongs. -
I was installing a new deck in my beater and the stupid thing is not deep enough to accept the Denon H/U I wanted to put in. So I'd like to know who changed theirs radios in a EA82 (I have a '92 Loyale) and what they put in so I can get an idea with will fit. But still I'm pretty sad... I wanted to know if this 2x18bits CDA CD player would sound better than my previou sCD45z Nak. Well... I'll have to wait to listen to it I guess...

If you want an EJ22, why not get a Legacy?
dreedraffs replied to Monte's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Found little information about it on the global Subaru web site. it is the 2.0X version that is available with a D/R tranny (1.447 crawl ratio). But it looks like it is still an AWD, not a 4WD. -

Interesting thread. I own both AE82 ('92 Loyale) and EJ22 ('00 Impreza Brighton). Well, actually I gave the Impreza to my g/f because she need a reliable daily driver and I bought a cheap (600$) sedan Loyale as a beater for winter. Well, I really liked the Impreza. I did some mods on the suspension as it now has 2.5 coil springs, KYB GR-2 shocks and WRX rear sway bar with 16in wheels. So overall the handling of a WRX minus the weight. I'd say, as a ''all year long'' driver I'd take the Impreza because it is much more fun in summer as it is more powerful, has better handling and feels stronger. But for winter I prefer the Loyale as it has a 4WD instead of an AWD. And as I paid 600$ (compare to 11'500$ for the Impreza) I'm not afraid at all to wreck the car. I do stuff with the Loyale I'd never do with the Impreza. Well, in fact I'm having so much fun with the Loyale this winter that I'm thinking of buying another old Soob for next winter. The one I have is rather crap and I always liked the Brat, so if I can find a Brat... Maybe I'd prefer an older Soob for summer if I had a Brat or a RX/II, but for now, I'd say I can't compare a car that is 8 years older than another one. I really like the Loyale. It is crap, but I like it. It is just that... when I get in the Impreza it is like getting in a Cadillac compared to the Loyale. A Cadillac with quite a sporty handling thought... So overall... EA82 in winter as they are cheap and 4WD. So more fun in the snow since I just don't care much about the car. EJ22 car (Impreza or Legacy) as a daily driver for comfort, performance and a car that feels stronger than the average compact car. Subaru should just have continued making 4WD. They should have put a tranny like the coupe RX available for EJ22... that would have been awesome. -
I have a 2000 Impreza brighton with basic brakes. I had discs and pads changed not so long ago because of a caliper that jammed. A friend of mine who has a 1999 TS (with the same braking system) was asking me about a front disc hotter than the other. Is there any specific problem with the front calipers on Imprezas? I know the rear caliper for rear discs equipped cars have problem with the hand brake, but I never heard anything about the front calipers. Any input is welcome.

Just for the pleasure of asking... Let's say I have a Brat (I don't actrually I have a 4WD sedan '92 Loyale) and I want to make a nice offroad toy. Which non-turbo engine would you pick? I'd put a RX-II tranny (D/R full time 4WD), so I'd need an EJ adaptor plate. The idea is to have good low/mid rev torque, ease of install and a light weight engine. I could still do some minor upgrades to the engine, but nothing internal (I don't consider cams as internal). So, EJ20 or EJ22?

lift/mods/tires for my Soob. I missed the FAQ. . .
dreedraffs replied to Tom63050's topic in Off Road
I have a '92 Loyale and and I'd like to make it an offroad car. I looked at the backyard boys lift kit for EA82 and I'm wondering if the car would need any other work (shocks, tie rod, shafts etc.) with a BYB lift kit installed (either 3 or 4 inches). -
Just bought a winter beater ('92 sedan 4WD Loyale) and I'm wondering how hard/easy it would be to turn it into a good offroad car. The car has what I call an ''on demand'' 4WD, which I'd like to keep. So I guess the idea would be to stick with the tranny or get a earlier Impreza tranny (non full time AWD) if it fits. But I think I'd ever prefer a 2WD/4HI/4LOW tranny. About engines... I'd like more torque and more HP, but no turbo. So no big power EJ20T. A 2.7 XT6 engine would be fine, but I'm not sure if it fits since the EA82 engine is close to the rad in the Loyale. I think even an EJ22 would do the trick. So, considering I'd like to get more torque/power without turbo and a non full time 4WD that would work great in off road, what engine/tranny combo would be interesting? Thanks
